Early ornithology
Birds were most likely a vital source of food for humans in early ages. Nearly 80 species remains of have been uncovered in excavations very early towns and villages. Poultry and falconry (an art or sport which involves the use of trained raptors to hunt or pursue game for humans) were early hunting techniques used to catch birds a source of food. John Ray (1627-1705) and Francis Willughby (1635-1672) developed the first professional scale system of bird classification in the 17th century. The system used function and morphology, more scientifically sound methods, as opposed to form or behavior, in which information was gathered more from observations, making it less accurate. Ornithology's birth is considered to be Ornithologiae's work called libri tres (1676), which was also worked on and completed by John Ray. Ray also worked on

Ornithology
Ornithology is a zoological science that studies those creatures belonging to the Class Aves, much better known as birds. Birds, the only vertebrates that have feathers, are generally divided into two major groups. Ostriches, Emus, Dodos and Kiwis are ratites, birds that lack that conspicuous keel-like extension on the breast bone and lack the ability to fly. The vast majority of the birds, however, are non-ratites and possess the keel to which the powerful muscles that power the wings are attached. All-in-all, there are over 9200 extant species of birds divided into 30 orders and 174 families. Their ability to fly has allowed them to colonize every land mass on earth including the Arctic and Antarctic and some, like the Penguins, have adapted an aquatic lifestyle coming to shore only to breed and raise young. Fossil evidence of the ancestors of modern birds indicates that they were contemporaneous with dinosaurs. Indeed, evidence is mounting that these feathered creatures are in fact the highly evolved living incarnation of the terrible lizards. This long evolutionary history has allowed for the development of the many unique morphological, physical and behavioral attributes in birds that make the science of ornithology such an interesting vocation. This field-oriented certificate program leads you through a study of bird biology, behavior, identification, and conservation. Lectures and lab work provide foundational knowledge. You'll also have the chance to receive practical birding experience, guided by expert instructors at local birding "hot spots." Upon certificate completion, you will understand the roles birds play in our ecosystem and be able to identify over 100 migrant and resident birds common to northern Illinois. Through participation you will:
    • Gain an understanding of Chicago-area avian ecology and biodiversity.

    –noun
  • That branch of zoölogy which relates to birds; the scientific study or knowledge of birds. Ornithology is commonly said to date from the time of Aristotle. It received a great impetus about the middle of the sixteenth century from the writings of Gesner, Belon, and Aldrovandi. The foundation of modern scientific ornithology was laid toward the end of the seventeenth century by Willughby and Ray. Tenable technical names in modern ornithology date from the tenth edition of the “Systema Naturæ;” of Linnæus, 1758. Field ornithology is the study of living birds, as distinguished from

Much research is carried out at universities and museums, which house and maintain the collections of bird skins, skeletons, and preserved specimens upon which most taxonomists and anatomists depend. Field research, on the other hand, is conducted by both professionals and amateurs, the latter providing valuable information on behaviour, ecology, distribution, and migration. Although much information about birds is gained through simple, direct field observation (usually aided only by binoculars), some areas of ornithology have benefited greatly from the introduction of such instruments and techniques as bird

history Ornithology (from Greek: ὄρνις, ὄρνιθος, ornis ornithos , "bird"; and λόγος, logos , "knowledge") is a branch of zoology that concerns the study of bird s. Several aspects of ornithology differ from related disciplines, due partly to the high visibility and the aesthetic appeal of birds. Most marked among these is the extent of studies undertaken by amateurs working within the parameters of strict scientific methodology. The science of ornithology has a long history and studies on birds have helped develop several key concepts in evolution, behaviour and ecology such as the definition of species, the process of speciation instinct , learning, ecological niches, guilds , island biogeography, phylogeography and conservation While early ornithology was principally concerned with descriptions and distributions of species, ornithologists today seek answers to very specific questions, often using birds as models to test hypotheses or predictions based on theories. Most modern biological theories apply across taxonomic groups and the number of professional scientists who identify themselves as "ornithologists" has therefore declined. A wide range of tools and techniques are used in ornithology and innovations are constantly made.

Ornithology is the study of birds. Alberta has a rich, diverse bird life with over 250 breeding species. The province has distinctive natural regions (Boreal Forest, Aspen Parkland, Grasslands and Rocky Mountains), each with characteristic bird species. The eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains creates an active zone of contact between distinct forms of numerous species. The evolutionary and taxonomic consequences of contact remain an exciting area of ornithological research. Bird exhibits are a popular feature of the galleries of the Royal Alberta Museum.
