As a "historical science" it tries to explain causes rather than conduct experiments to observe effects. Paleontological observations have been documented as far back as the 5th century BC . The science became established in the 18th century as a result of Georges Cuvier 's work on comparative anatomy , and developed rapidly in the 19th century. Fossils found in China since the 1990s have provided new information about the earliest evolution of animals , early fish dinosaurs and the evolution of birds and mammals . Paleontology lies on the border between biology and geology , and shares with archaeology a border that is difficult to define. It now uses techniques drawn from a wide range of sciences, including

    Paleontology Collections
The Science Museum of Minnesota paleontology collection is notable for its broad taxonomic and geologic extent, as well as its application to and inclusion in exhibits and educational programs. Collections range in size from pollen spores and microfossils to some of the best-preserved dinosaur fossils ever discovered. The entire range of earth history is recorded in the collection, including the local Precambrian rocks and Paleozoic invertebrate fauna, a first-class suite of Mesozoic dinosaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, and synapsids, as well as wonderful collections of early Tertiary fishes, turtles, crocodiles, mammals, and birds and Minnesota's own Pleistocene megafauna. The collection continues to grow, as Science Museum paleontologists recover fossils in their field areas. Curators Arthur Coggeshal and Louis Powell established paleontological collections early in the history of the Science Museum of Minnesota. Bruce Erickson established the modern paleontology program at the Science Museum in 1959, and his active field and lab research programs significantly added to the collection of vertebrate fossils. More recent efforts by the SMM staff have concentrated on collecting Mesozoic and Cenozoic amniotes. Collection facilities have been completely renovated since 1999 through grants from the National Science Foundation . Most specimens are housed in secure metal cabinets on user-friendly compactors. Plans are currently underway to computerize the collections database.

Home Library Science Science of Everyday Things Concept Thanks to a certain 1993 blockbuster , most people know the name of at least one period in geologic history. Jurassic Park spurred widespread interest in dinosaurs and, despite its fantastic plot, encouraged popular admiration and respect for the work of paleontologists. Paleontology is the study of life-forms from the distant past, as revealed primarily through the record of fossils left on and in the earth. It is a complex and varied subdiscipline of historical geology that is tied closely to the biological sciences. As with other types of historical geology, the work of a paleontologist is similar to that of a detective investigating a case with few and deceptive clues. Reliable fossil samples are more rare, compared with the vast number of species that have lived on Earth, than one might imagine. Furthermore, several factors pose challenges for paleontologists attempting to interpret the fossil record. Nonetheless, paleontologic research has led to a growing understanding of how life emerged, how Earth has changed, and how vast animal populations became extinct over relatively short periods of time. How It Works Thinking in Terms of Geologic Time timescale that dwarfs the span of human existence. The essays Historical Geology and Geologic Time offer several comparisons to emphasize the proportions involved and to illustrate the very short period during which human life has existed on this planet.

I Want To Be A Paleontologist !
Advice for Students and Parents
Paleontological Research Institution
Ithaca, NY There is no luckier person than the person who can make their passion their career. Most professional paleontologists are just such lucky people. They are people consumed with a passion to understand the history of life on earth. Paleontology is fun, thrilling, and fascinating, but it is also hard work. It is not "easier" than the more traditional "core" science disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, or geology. In many ways, paleontology is more difficult than any other science because to be a good paleontologist you must know a great deal about all of these fields. Paleontology is among the broadest of sciences.
What is paleontology?
What background do I need in high school?
The best starting point is a college preparatory program with as many science and math courses as possible. Outside reading in paleontology and visiting museums with fossil displays is helpful for building up knowledge of fossils themselves. No matter how interested or knowledgeable a student is in paleontology, however, good overall grades in high school are almost always required for admission to a good college or university, which is a necessary prerequisite for a career in paleontology.

http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/FAQ/whatispaleo.html
Paleontology is a rich field, imbued with a long and interesting past and an even more intriguing and hopeful future. Many people think paleontology is the study of fossils. In fact, paleontology is much more. Paleontology is traditionally divided into various subdisciplines:
Micropaleontology: Study of generally microscopic fossils, regardless of the group to which they belong. Paleobotany: Study of fossil plants; traditionally includes the study of fossil algae and fungi in addition to land plants. Palynology: Study of pollen and spores, both living and fossil, produced by land plants and protists. Invertebrate Paleontology: Study of invertebrate animal fossils, such as mollusks, echinoderms, and others. Vertebrate Paleontology: Study of vertebrate fossils, from primitive fishes to mammals. Human Paleontology (Paleoanthropology): The study of prehistoric human and proto-human fossils. Taphonomy: Study of the processes of decay, preservation, and the formation of fossils in general. Ichnology: Study of fossil tracks, trails, and footprints.

This page was written by Ewan Wolff , Montana State University Geoscience Education Web Development Team "The fossil skeletons that we found were not articulated, which means that the bones had come apart at some point before the fossilization process began. Otherwise, we would have found neatly arranged skeletons instead of jumbles of bones. Furthermore, there were no marks or breaks showing that the bones had been cracked or chewed by predators prior to fossilization. These bits of evidence led me to think that after their deaths the babies must have lain rotting in the nest, slowly being denuded of flesh, and then, in the second stage of decay, their skeletons must have come apart as the connecting tendons and ligaments disintegrated."
