    Who Invented the Periodic Table?
Do you know who described the first periodic table of the elements that ordered the elements by increasing atomic weight and according to trends in their properties? I'll give you a hint. It was not Dmitri Mendeleev. The actual inventor of the periodic table is someone rarely mentioned in chemistry history books. zSB(3,3)

Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (October 2010) The periodic table of the chemical elements (also periodic table of the elements or just the periodic table ) is a tabular display of the chemical elements . Although precursors to this table exist, its invention is generally credited to Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869, who intended the table to illustrate recurring ("periodic") trends in the properties of the elements. The layout of the table has been refined and extended over time, as new elements have been discovered, and new theoretical models have been developed to explain chemical behavior. The periodic table is now ubiquitous within the academic discipline of chemistry , providing a useful framework to classify, systematize, and compare all of the many different forms of chemical behavior. The table has found many applications in chemistry, physics biology , and engineering , especially chemical engineering . The current standard table contains 118 elements to date. (elements

Each cell of the table contains a different element. The cells of most periodic tables contain the name and symbol of each element, the atomic number (the number of protons ), and the atomic weight (average number of protons + neutrons ). Some periodic tables will contain other information, such as the electron shell configuration of each element, or their state at room temperature ( liquid gas , or solid The electron configurations of atoms is the primarily determinant of their chemical reactivity, and particularly the outer-shell (or "valence") electrons. The elements in the periodic table are arranged into rows (known as groups or families) and columns (known as periods ) based on how many shells of electron the atoms possess, and the number of electron in outer-shell, respectively.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The periodic table of the chemical elements is a list of known atoms ( chemical elements ). In the table the elements are placed in the order of their atomic numbers starting with the lowest number. The atomic number of an element is the same as the number of electrons or protons in that particular atom In the periodic table the elements are arranged into periods and groups A row of elements across the table is called a period . Each period has a number: from 1 to 7. Period 1 has only 2 elements in it: hydrogen and helium . Period 2 and Period 3 both have 8 elements. Other periods are longer. A row of elements down the table is called a group . There are 18 groups in the standard periodic table. Each group has a number: from 1 to 18. Elements in a group have electrons arranged in similar ways, which gives them similar chemical properties (they behave in similar ways). For example, group 18 is known as the noble gases because they are all gases and they do not combine with other atoms. The periodic table can be used by chemists to observe patterns, and relationships between the elements. For example, elements to the top and far left of the table are the most metallic, and elements on the bottom right are the least metallic. (e.g. lithium is much more metallic than xenon). There are also many other patterns and relationships.

The periodic table of the chemical elements is a tabular display of the chemical elements . It is perhaps the icon of Chemistry and expresses much about the physical and chemical properties of the known elements . The emergence of the periodic table occurred concurrently with the development of the scientific understanding of the composition of matter . In its current form, it owes much to quantum mechanics. The electronic structures derived from quantum mechanics are used to explain theoretically the experimentally observed periodic variations in properties of the elements . The periodic table is one of the essential components of our understanding of the universe and underlies all of chemistry.

The first periodic table was devised by Dmitri Mendeleev and published in 1869. Mendeleev found he could arrange the 65 elements that were then known in a grid or table so that each element had: 1. A higher atomic weight than the one on its left. 2. Similar chemical properties to other elements in the same column. He realized that the table in front of him lay at the very heart of chemistry. In his table he noted gaps - spaces where elements should be but none had yet been discovered. In fact, just as Adams and Le Verrier could be said to have discovered the planet Neptune on paper, Mendeleev could be said to have discovered germanium (which he called eka -silicon because he observed a gap between silicon and tin), gallium (

The Periodic Table is a chart featuring all the elements. It was put together by Dmitri Mendeleev. He set up the chart by organizing the the elements according to the physical and chemical properties they have in common, Each grouping is arranged starting with those with the lowest atomic number and moving along in order of these atomic numbers. The groups are numbered from one to eight in Roman numerals (I-VIII). Each group is split into two subgroups called families. These families are called the a series and the b series.
All the elements in the same group are similar chemically. They have the same number of valence electrons. Valence is the ability of different atoms to form chemical bonds based on the number of electrons an atom gives up or takes on when forming chemical bonds. This allows combinations of atoms to form compounds.
Atoms that form one chemical bond are called monovalent, those that form two chemical bonds are called divalent, those that form three chemical bonds are called trivalent and those that form four chemical bonds are called tetravalent.
The rows going across the Periodic Table contain elements with the same number of electron shells. These rows are called periods.
