The elements couldn't be changed using any chemical method. Each element has a unique number of protons. If you examine samples of iron and silver, you can't tell how many protons the atoms have. However, you can tell the elements apart because they have different properties. You might notice there are more similarities between iron and silver than between iron and oxygen. Could there be a way to organize the elements so you could tell at a glance which ones had similar properties? What is the Periodic Table?

    • Define Periodic Table The periodic table has been called the bible of chemistry. The name is appropriate when considering the involvement of the table in every chemist's work. It acts as a constant, vital reference and organizational chart, its structure reflecting many of the known properties of all elements. Parts of the Periodic Table The periodic table is a graphic display of the basic characteristics of the elements. The table allows scientists to grasp easily the relationships and similarities among the elements, which are the building blocks of all existing matter. How to Remember the Periodic Table Early chemistry courses will require that students memorize all or at least part of the Periodic Table of Elements. The periodic table contains 117 elements, and though you may not ever encounter many of those elements during your studies, knowing them and their numbers is essential to calling to mind the other elements. Description of the Periodic Table The periodic table is a detailed index of the elements known to mankind. The most elegant feature of this table is its grouping and organization of elements which neatly places them according to atomic number and group. The periodic table was created to demonstrate the "periods" observed in elements.
