Permaculture Association (Isle of Man) The aim of the Permaculture Association (Isle of Man) is to educate and inform on issues of true sustainability. Established in 1998, by some of those attending the first permaculture design course held on the Isle of Man, The Permaculture Association (Isle of Man) was registered as an Isle of Man Educational Charity (No. 795) in 2000. The founding of the charity and its ongoing work would not have been possible without the support of its main benefactor; Mrs Dobby. Her initial gift allowed the association to purchase a yurt classroom and its original library of permaculture related books. The association's objects as defined in its constitution are:
a) To advance public education in Permaculture, sustainability and related subjects.
b) To carry out research into Permaculture, sustainability and related subjects, and to publish and disseminate the results of such research with or without charge. The Isle of Man Permaculture Association is based upon permaculture principles and rests on the fundamental ethical tenets of: Earth Care Permaculture as a design system is based on natural systems. It is about working with nature, not against it - not using natural resources unnecessarily or at a rate at which they cannot be replaced. It also means using outputs from one system as inputs for another (vegetable peelings as compost, for example), and so minimising wastage.

Permaculture
The vast majority of current food production systems in the West are unsustainable. It seems that research and development and modern technology have taken us on a one-way path of food production - a path that has lead to degradation, environmental pollution, loss of biodiversity, chemical toxicity and food with poor nutrient content. How has this happened? It has happened, not because of lack knowledge of sustainable food production systems, but because we have come to revere science and the mighty dollar. We have striven to produce more, for less, and with the highest economic return, but all the while using a system that is unsustainable. Permaculture is more than a sustainable food production system - it is not limited to plant and animal production, but also includes community planning and development, use of appropriate technology and adoption of concepts and philosophies that are earth-based and people-centred. It includes economic and social structures that support the evolution and development of more permanent communities, such as co-housing projects and eco-villages. It embodies holistic systems and processes for living, and is based on the use of ecology as the basis for designing integrated systems. Permaculture has been described as 'integrated farming', 'ecological engineering', and 'cultivated ecology'. The word 'permaculture' was coined in 1978 by Bill Mollison, and David Holmgren. The word is a contraction not only of

The environmental problems of our modern world couldn't be overlooked any longer some thirty years ago:
  • pollution of soil, water and air loss of plant and animal species rapid consumption of non-renewable resources
The Challenge
How would it be possible to continue our existence on this planet without destroying it at the same time? Permaculture
Bill Mollison's and David Holmgren's answer was 'Permaculture', a system they developed in Australia in the 70's. This means permanent culture, permanence of our existence on Earth through a different culture, through permanent agriculture which does put just as much back into the soil as is taken. not just a pond, but a small world in itself

Permaculture is a form of whole systems design based on the sustainability of natural systems, seeking to reproduce that sustainability in our living environment. Although at first the term was used to mean "permanent agriculture," it is applicable to all realms of design and is now considered to mean "permanent culture". verification needed The practices and principles of permaculture are modular and applicable to any bioregion, while specific choices and practices are specific to local conditions.

    edit History
Permaculture was coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in Australia during the 1970’s as a permanent agriculture for reversing the environmental degradation that seems to follow closely on the heels of modern development while simultaneously increasing the sustainability of food production systems by promoting localized self-reliance. Today, the concept and methodology have evolved to become supportive of a permanent culture, and are certainly not limited to agriculture alone.
