81. Permaculture: Weeds Or Wild Nature
1997 article by David Holmgren, one of the co-founders of the permaculture movement, discusses the evolution of ideas related to environmentally progressive responses to weeds and pests, with particular focus on Australia.

Weeds or Wild Nature
The following article was published in the Permaculture International Journal in 1997 (issue 61) provides an indication of the ideas which are further developed in other writings in and which is the subject of the new book being researched. If you reproduce or quote this article please credit the author and PIJ as original publication source. WEEDS OR WILD NATURE? The permaculture movement's development since from its conceptual origins in the 1970's has been closely connected to Landcare and revegetation. The primary agenda of the movement has been to assist people to become more self reliant through the design and development of productive and sustainable gardens and farms. The design principles which are the conceptual foundation of permaculture were derived from the science of systems ecology and study of pre-industrial examples of sustainable land use. They suggested agricultural systems needed fundamental redesign rather than fine tuning. A much greater role for trees and other perennial plants to stabilise the landscape and provide for human needs was one of the cornerstones of the permaculture strategy. From one perspective, permaculture is a revegetation strategy. The initial permaculture vision involved forests of "useful" species planted in arrays to mimic natural systems. Although food species dominate the strategy for intensive (zone1&2) systems, in more broadacre areas fibre, animal fodder and timber along with passive environment functions are the appropriate "uses" of revegetation. A small celebration of Robert s forest garden at Wenlock Edge, described as possibly the UK s only fully developed permaculture Project.
http://www.spiralseed.co.uk/forestgarden/
This site is a small celebration of the Forest Garden at Wenlock Edge, Shropshire on the Welsh Borders, created by Robert Hart, who passed away on the 7th March, 2000.
It consists of photographs taken during a visit in July 1997 by students of the Permaculture Design Course held by Naturewise in North London, and an account of that visit which was published in the newsletter of VOHAN , the Vegan Organic Horticulture and Agriculture Network.
To me Robert was a true 20th Century hero, whose contribution to our sense of possiblity far, far outstripped the sad, small values my generation have been encouraged to see as aspirational.
I'm proud to have met him, and hope that I can do the best I can to carry forward the vision that he had of productive city forests and edible landscapes replacing the grey concrete jungles and factory farmed 'countrysides' in which so many of us exist.
"Obviously, few of us are in a position to restore the forests.. But tens of millions of us have gardens, or access to open spaces such as industrial wastelands, where trees can be planted. and if full advantage can be taken of the potentialities that are available even in heavily built up areas, new 'city forests' can arise..." (Robert A.de J.Hart)

Spring Time In Your Garden
I love growing vegetables It's time for you to start planting FREE VEGETABLE GARDEN PLANS There is something about a vegetable garden that just 'feels' right to me. My parents and grandparents were also vegetable growers. I find it so rewarding to wander out and just stand there looking at my very own produce trying to decide which specific ones to pick for our next meal. It seems like I have been growing vegetables forever. I do have a few secrets to my success though and here they are. 1. COMPANION PLANTING 2. RAISED GARDEN BEDS 3. NO DIG GARDEN or LASAGNE I can say without doubt this is the very best combination I know of to gain success with vegetables and flowers, it works for me without exception. These 4 FREE companion planted vegetable plans have been designed by me. I have grown them myself so I know they are successful. FOUR FREE COMPANION PLANTED VEGETABLE PLANS THE FAMILY GARDEN VEGETABLES FOR ALL SALAD DELIGHT CIRCLE OF FOOD For me there is no greater sense of elation than seeing the food I grew sitting on plates waiting to be eaten by family and friends. It is truly astonishing how much food you can grow in a relatively small space.

DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in the green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on that sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. making an axe handle
March 11, 2010 by dibnah I roughed out a blank on the shave horse with the draw knife then drew round an existing handle to get the shape. I then went back to the draw knife and roughed out the rest. The straight grain of the Willow was a great help. Other than some sanding to get a smooth finish it was all done on the shave horse with the draw knife. With it being green wood, I then brought it in and placed it by the fire for a few days to dry it out. Next I cut a little notch in the top to take the wedge. With a little work with a knife I managed to get the shaft to fit into the head of the axe. (this was harder than it looked as the hole was irregular shape) I then drove an seasoned Oak wedge into the grove. Posted in Permaculture Pole lathe turning crafts downshifting ... sustainability

I'll be dragging some wordpress functionality over here, one glorious day. Meanwhile, you can access a few things here through the navigation bar above. First is my Honours thesis on urban community gardens in Sydney, which drew on actor network theory and permaculture theory. Second is my PhD on citizenship, sustainability and housing, which drew on new ecology, feminist economics and radical democracy. There are also links to some papers under the PhD page. Last, there are my current lines of work, which include community land trusts, resilience and design for social innovation. As per usual it's fairly self-explanatory - I hope it's also useful.
