Petroglyph on Gabriola Island
Photo: M. Guille
Rock carvings and paintings are found throughout the inhabited world. In British Columbia alone, over 500 examples of this type of archaeological site have been recorded, more than in any other province in Canada.
The rock carvings, or petroglyphs , were made by the aboriginal people of the region by pecking and abrading selected rock surfaces with stone tools.
The paintings, or pictographs , were applied to rock with brushes, sticks or fingers. Pigments were usually made from powdered minerals (ochres); haematite and limonite.
A binder of animal fat or fish eggs may have been added to make them adhere to the rock surface. The bonding ability and composition of the pigment is such that it easily outlasts the commercial paints of today. Over 90 per cent of all rock paintings are red.
Locations for rock art carvings and paintings were carefully chosen. They were places of power or mystery; places where the forces of nature were believed to be especially strong. They are marked by unusual natural features such as waterfalls, rock formations or caves. Nearly all sites are near water and may also be near old village sites or along trails or ancient trade routes.

What are Petroglyphs and who made them? Petroglyphs are rock carvings (rock paintings are called pictographs) made by pecking directly on the rock surface using a stone chisel and a hammerstone. When the "desert varnish" on the surface of the rock was pecked off, the lighter rock underneath was exposed, creating the petroglyph. Archaeologists have estimated there may be over 25,000 petroglyph images along the 17 miles of escarpment within the monument boundary. It is estimated 90% of the monument's petroglyphs were created by the ancestors of today's Pueblo Indians. Puebloans have lived in the Rio Grande Valley since before 500 A.D., but a population increase around 1300 A.D. resulted in numerous new settlements. It is believed that the majority of the petroglyphs were carved from about 1300 through the late 1680s. The arrival of Spanish people in 1540 had a dramatic impact on the lifestyle of the pueblo people. In 1680 the Pueblo tribes rose up in revolt of Spanish rule, and drove the settlers out of the area and back to El Paso, Texas. In 1692 the Spanish resettled the area. As a result of their return, there was a renewed influence of the Catholic religion, which discouraged participation by the Puebloans in many of their ceremonial practices. As a consequence, many of these practices went underground, and much of the image making by the Puebloans decreased. A small percentage of the petroglyphs found within the park pre-date the Puebloan time period, perhaps reaching as far back as B.C. 2000. Other images date from historic periods starting in the 1700s, with petroglyphs carved by early Spanish settlers.

    edit History
A collection of petrified logs are on display outside the park interpretive center During the Miocene epoch, around 15.5 million years ago, the region was lush and wet, home to many plant species now extinct. A number of these trees were buried in volcanic ash, and the organic matter in the tree trunks was gradually replaced by minerals in the groundwater; the resulting petrified wood was protected for millennia by flows of basalt . Near the end of the last ice age , the catastrophic Missoula Floods (about 15,000 B.C.) eroded the basalt, exposing some of the petrified wood.

Handcrafted sterling silver jewelry inspired by the petroglyphs of Southeast Alaska.
    http://www.alaskasilver.com/
Petroglyphs are engravings on rock and were carved by the Native Americans that inhabited the area at the time. They are most commonly found in the Pacific Northwest and Southwest regions of the United States, but are found throughout the world. The design was created by striking the face of the rock repeatedly with a sharper piece of stone. Pictographs or paintings on rock, can also be found. Animal and human figures are the most abundant of petroglyphs; but circles, spirals, and other graphics are also found. Petroglyph Beach in Wrangell, Alaska was the original inspiration for this unique line. Many of the rock carvings are slowly fading due to weather, erosion and human impact and they may all too soon be gone. Simply Sterling has designed this jewelry to allow individuals to take home our interpretations of the treasured petroglyphs and enjoy wearing them for years to come. Simply Sterling

The petroglyphs that I saw at Volcanoes National Park were along the Chain of Craters Road. There was a small pullout to park the car and a simple walk in to see the petroglyphs. The map indicated that the trail was .7 miles, but since the terrain was mostly level, it was not a strenuous hike. The trail is marked by cairns (small rock piles), and they lead to a wooden deck that encircles the petroglyphs. You can walk around on the deck and look over the rails to see the carvings. Since the petroglyps are protected, it is important that people do not walk on or touch the carvings. The images were carved by the ancestors of some people who are still local to the area. The image on the right shows many holes dug into the rock. The people placed the umbilical cord of a newborn into a hole carved into the rock. If left undiscovered, the child would not grow up into a thief. In this image, there are many holes, and one interesting one that is surrounded by three circles. genFooter("1999", "April 25, 2010", "false")

    http://ronlee.net/
Photographers are visual artists. While a camera, like a pencil or painter's brush, can be usefully employed as a documentary tool, photography in itself is not a science. Like a drawing or painting it is a medium of visual expression. The question for visual artists is how clearly we can express our personal vision. The camera has long passed the days when it was considered only a documentary device. It is now more than ever a tool for artists to express themselves. My wish is that I am able to express myself through the thoughtful use of a camera. At this time it is my desire to do portraits of the Earth, to capture the Earth's personality and true character. To experience this phenomenon of nature, we must be attentive to the subject. Just as people only reveal themselves on special occasions for people they know and trust, so too, does the Earth save herself for those who respect her and are willing to make the sacrifice and journey off the beaten path. These revealings don't last long; one must be ready and skillful to capture these moments. The result is a photograph that captures the essence of the Earth that has rarely been seen before. I feel I know the Earth and have gained her trust and therefore am permitted to photograph her in ways that truly expose who she is. Unlike a painting, these photographs are of real subjects and real places that do actually exist. I hope these photographs will help you gain a better appreciation for nature and help you learn more about this planet called Earth. I have been fortunate enough to photograph many wonderful places, some of which are included here. I find these photographs allow me to escape back to the locations where I photographed them. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do. Let me know what you think.

The rock art found within Saguaro National Park was created by the prehistoric Hohokam people. The rock art on this page is located at the Signal Hill Picnic Area in the Western District of Saguaro National Park. See the Picnic Areas page for directions. The Hohokam may have pecked these petroglyphs more than a thousand years ago while on hunting and gathering expeditions. As more is discovered about these Petroglyphs we have a better understanding of the Hohokam culture. Rock art is found throughout the American Southwest, wherever prehistoric peoples lived or journeyed. At Saguaro National Park many expressions of rock art, known as petroglyphs, were pecked into stones. People do not know what these petroglyphs mean. They could have religious or ceremonial significance. They may be solstice markers, clan symbols, decorative motifs, or simply ancient graffiti.
