The Petroglyphs of Ometepe Island, Nicaragua
By Suzanne Baker (Clicking on the in the article brings up a picture of the petroglyph under discussion, clicking anywhere on your screen makes the picture disappear.) For six field seasons since 1995 my colleagues and I have been conducting an intensive archaeological survey on Ometepe Island. With the assistance of numerous volunteers in the last three years, we have to date recorded 73 sites and over 1400 boulders with petroglyphs (almost 1700 petroglyph panels). Although we are still in the data entry and initial analysis stage of our work, I welcome the opportunity to provide an introduction to a little known but exciting and unique area of rock art in Latin America. Indeed, I think Nicaragua may come to be recognized as one of the great rock art areas of the world with Ometepe Island as perhaps the center of that tradition. Nicaragua in general is one of the least known areas archaeologically in Central America. While there has been a great deal of work done in Costa Rica to the south and El Salvador and Honduras to the north, relatively few systematic archaeological studies have been conducted in Nicaragua. As an intermediate area between Mesoamerica and South America, its pre-Columbian cultures seem to have exhibited interesting independent development as well as influences from and to both the north and south.

Rock Art Sites in the Moab Area
Spend a few hours exploring some of the easily accessible rock art panels surrounding Moab. Petroglyph panel along Potash-Lower Colorado River Scenic Byway (U-279) The Moab area has numerous examples of Indian rock art to enjoy. This page briefly discusses some types, dates, the artists and their cultures and how to take care of these irreplaceable sites. Directions are included to a number of sites which allow you to sample some of the easily accessible ancient rock art in the Moab area. All sites are accessible with a passenger car and a short walk!
    What is Indian Rock Art?
There are two types of rock art: petroglyphs (motifs that are pecked, ground, incised, abraded, or scratched on the rock surface) and pictographs (paintings or drawings in one or more colors using mineral pigments and plant dyes on the rock surface). Although many images may have originally been executed as a combination of both techniques, most now appear only as a petroglyph because the paint material has faded or washed away over many years. On closer examination you might be able to see a painted design accompanying the pecked image. Examples of both types of rock art are found along the sites described in this guide. Each site is unique. The patterns and motifs may be similar, but are never quite the same. Styles vary from place to place, and from people to people.

The of Campeche Island
Rock Art of Santa Catarina Southern Brazi l
Introduction by John Robinson
My trip with Brazilian Research Archaeologist Keler Lucas to see the unbelievably sophisticated Petroglyphs on the Island of Campeche turned out to be one of the great Artistic adventures of my life. The Petroglyphs of Campeche are truly wonderful works of Art . Who were the people who executed these extraordinary relief carvings, and when? In all probability these questions will never be solved as the passage of time has buried the answers.
Carbon dating of Middens (refuse mound) on the island of Santa Catarina have shown that people have been living in the area for about 5000 year. The interest of the Bradshaw Foundation was fully reported by the Santa Catarina Press, and lead to an official visit to the Island of Campeche by the Director of IPHAN, the Department in charge of

Some people think that these petroglyphs show the "atlatl." This was an ancient tool used before the invention of bows and arrows. Atlatl is an Aztec Indian word for the spear thrower. The atlatl looks like a stick with a hook at the end and a circular stone attached for extra weight. A spear was placed in the hooked end, and thrown. By using the atlatl, hunters could throw their spears further and with greater speed and power. This tool was very useful in hunting the large animals of the Pleistocene era. These petroglyphs are found in Little Petroglyph Canyon near Ridgecrest, Inyo County, California. Tours can be arranged through the Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest. 72. The Pipestone Petroglyphs
Article on an anthropological mystery, by Thomas D. Thiessen. petroglyphs near the Three Maidens were removed in the late nineteenth century, perhaps in a misguided attempt at historic preservation.

THE PIPESTONE PETROGLYPHS
Thomas D. Thiessen National Park Service The "Three Maidens" Pipestone National Monument, bordering the town of Pipestone in southwestern Minnesota, preserves and interprets the historic catlinite quarries which, for hundreds of years, served as the source of a soft red claystone that Native Americans carved into pipes and other objects. These famous quarries have often been described in travelers' accounts since 1832, when they were first known to have been visited by non-Native Americans (Prescott 1852; Parker 1966). Almost as famous as the quarries are the petroglyphs carved into Sioux Quartzite outcrops near the quarry pits. Many of these petroglyphs were observed, commented on, and recorded at various times during the nineteenth century by visitors drawn to the nearby quarries. A large number originally were carved into the quartzite bedrock that underlies a glacially deposited group of large granite boulders called the Three Maidens. At two other locations within the Monument, Native American petroglyphs have been recorded within the past decade. It is possible, even likely, that additional petroglyphs remain undiscovered within the Monument's boundary. Catlin's painting of Pipestone - Three Maidens are on the upper right.

Gabriola Museum
The Museum is a unique place to provide valuable insight into our ancestors and resources in a fascinating range of subjects. It tells the stories of the people who built and are building this island and its First Nations legacy. We also celebrate and preserve our diverse cultural heritage, and help foster mutual understanding, cooperation and peace amongst the peoples of this Island. The Gabriola Historical Museum Society mission: Is to foster and develop the interests of Gabriola residents, visitors and other institutions in the island's cultural and natural history. To tell the story of Gabriola island's geology, geography, flora, fauna and marine environment and life through exhibits, lectures or other means with emphasis on the way which the Coast Salish people, Euraopean explorers, post contact pioneers, and recent inhabitants have related to its natural setting and earlier history. This is a non-profit volunteer-run community museum. On September 18th the Gabriola Museum will have been open for 15 years. This is because the people of Gabriola have given their time and money to support the museum. Now, however, we are in need of volunteers to support us in the everyday running of an internationally recognized museum. An eminent professor from Europe as well as visitors from all over North America have come to view our special history, which is Gabriola Island. On this 15th anniversary, we the Board of the Gabriola Historical and Museum Society request your help in maintaining the museum for the future. Please come to the museum to find out what you, the people of Gabriola Island, can do to improve, lead and sustain the museum for the next 15 years.

The Sanilac Petroglyphs is a Michigan State Historic Site located in the center of Michigan's Thumb area. Though this site is jointly administered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries , the pavilion surrounding the petroglyph area is currently closed to the public. The park is not staffed due to Michigan budget concerns, and the area is fenced in and locked. However, it is possible to get permission to view the petroglyphs if you contact the park manager at Albert E. Sleeper State Park . There may be a use fee involved. Great care must be taken when viewing the petroglyphs not to touch them, walk on them, or harm them in any way. To get to the petroglyphs from the south, take M-53 north to Bay City - Forestville Road, turn right and go past New Greenleaf about 8 miles. Germania Road turns south and a parking lot for the petroglyph trail is almost immediately on the right hand side. If you are coming from the north, the petroglyphs are almost directly south of Bad Axe about ten miles. We visited the site May 31, 2003. One of our interests in visiting the site had to do with whether or not there is any correlation between the carvings on the sandstone at this site and the Soper-Savage artifacts (commonly called "frauds" by many researchers). The Soper-Savage collection is a featured exhibit at the

San beliefs and southern African rock art
All too often, articles on southern African rock art imply that little is known about the San (more famously known as Bushmen), hunter-gatherers who populated the whole of southern Africa for many millennia. In fact, despite widespread decimation by both black and white settlers, several San groups survive in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and Namibia. Thanks to the work of anthropologists during the last few decades, and also to ethnographic records from the nineteenth century, we are fortunate to know much about the San way of life, complex religion and deeply religious rock art.
The fact that the San belief-system has lasted for many thousands of years explains why the oldest images of which we know (about 27,000 years old, in Namibia) possess elements similar to the most recent San depictions (produced about 100 years ago).
