Welcome to Ben and Myrna's Nine Mile Ranch the only guest ranch and campground in Nine Mile Canyon. Our ranch consists of 1,000 acres of rugged mountains, with a beautiful cottonwood-lined creek winding through lush green fields. It is not unusual to see deer, elk, coyotes, wild turkeys and other wildlife as you take your early morning hike. The elevation at the ranch house is about 6,700 feet, so expect refreshingly cool summer evenings.
Nine Mile Ranch is a real cattle ranch in scenic Nine Mile Canyon, the "world's longest art gallery." Hundreds of panels of rock art left by the Fremont Indians are on display throughout the canyon. Let us take you on a 1/2 day tour and learn about the area's history, or explore on your own. Having lived in the canyon as a youth and also several times as a married couple, we have lots of stories and memories. Some of them true! Stay at the Nine Mile Guest Ranch Campground, or in a rustic one-room cabin like the pioneers. We also have "Bunk n' Breakfast" rooms for families or singles, and an Indian teepee as well. We have limited electricity and hot showers, but you can mostly expect an authentic Western experience here among the farm animals. Nine Mile Ranch is ideal for everyone from small couples to large groups. We have a nice big pavillion, with nearby picnic tables, fire pits, showers, flush toilets, and a playgrounds for the little ones. And all around you are opportunities for hiking, mountain climbing, or fun in the creek. It's a great place for a family reunion or nice quiet getaway. Ask us about special activities like hayrides, dances, and live music.

North America's extensive heritage of prehistoric Indian rock art Petroglyph National Monument rock art shows strong similarities to other Anasazi artistic media from 1350-1680 AD, and to contemporary Pueblo Indian cultural symbolism.
Photos by Isaac Eastvold Looking due west from virtually any point in Albuquerque, one can see the familiar outline of volcanoes. Just one mile east of the volcanoes, a serpentine "wall" of black rock stretches north and south for 17 miles; this is the West Mesa basaltic escarpment . The escarpment and volcanic landscape is rich with hundreds of archeological sites indicating that for thousands prehistoric rock art

Contemporary pueblo ceremonial art such as sand paintings, kachina masks, pottery designs, weaving, altar painting, and puppetry have their roots in the Rio Grande Style. Rock Art imagery has preserved an invaluable record of these pueblo Indian religious roots extending back in time beyond the ethnographic records. While the petroglyphs comprise a prehistoric record of spirits and powers that figure prominently in pueblo ceremony and ritual today, they are also a distinctive pueblo

The Ekonk Hill Petroglyph Site, An Archaeogeodesy Perspective © 1998 by James Q. Jacobs In Nov. of 1995, the Arizona Republic reported on a Boston Globe article about a set of carved rocks found in rural New England. Several other papers carried the same reports. I summarize the 1995 reports as follows: A recent discovery in Sterling, Conn., an arrangement of petroglyphed boulders, may add to our understanding of the prehistoric peoples who lived in the area. Some Native Americans have said the site could be 10,000 or more years old. Alignments at the site indicate a possible association with agricultural cycles. The earliest evidence of corn planting in the area dates to 1,300 years ago. John Brown, tribal-history preservation officer for the Narragansett, thinks the rocks indicate celestial knowledge. ''There is direct concern about the safety of these rocks,'' Brown said in the Boston Globe article. ''The destruction of such a thing would be a terrible loss.'' Representatives of the Narragansett and Mohegan tribes are concerned that publicity about the site could lead to damage. State archaeologist, Nick Bellantoni, affiliated with the University of Connecticut, was quoted in the Boston Globe as follows, ''I'm rather confident that they are probably Native American in origin, but I have nothing to compare it to. I think it is very much worth investigating. We just want to make sure that people respect the site.'' Bellantoni wants to further investigate the site.
