Petroleum engineering
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Petroleum engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with the subsurface activities related to the production of hydrocarbons , which can be either crude oil or natural gas . These activities are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry, which are the activities of finding and producing hydrocarbons. (Refining and distribution to a market are referred to as the downstream sector.) Exploration , by earth scientists, and petroleum engineering are the oil and gas industry's two main subsurface disciplines, which focus on maximizing economic recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Petroleum geology and geophysics focus on provision of a static description of the hydrocarbon reservoir rock, while petroleum engineering focuses on estimation of the recoverable volume of this resource using a detailed understanding of the physical behavior of oil, water and gas within porous rock at very high pressure. The combined efforts of geologists and petroleum engineers throughout the life of a hydrocarbon accumulation determine the way in which a reservoir is developed and depleted, and usually they have the highest impact on field economics. Petroleum engineering requires a good knowledge of many other related disciplines, such as geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation (

Edit Read more: Engineering Petroleum Engineering is involved in the exploration and production activities of petroleum at the upstream end of the energy sector.
          Contents
          Sources Edit
Upstream, refers to the source of the petroleum, the petroleum deposit, usually buried deep beneath the earth's surface supplying flow to consumers as a river supplies the ocean.
          Technical profession Edit
It is an increasingly technical profession that involves procuring reserves from places that predecessors deemed too difficult or not economic with the technology of the day or commodity prices. While not thought of as highly technical in some circles, this is a fallacy. The use of high technology equipment, high speed computers, innovative materials, team management philosophies, statistics, probability analysis, and knowledge management, is usually coupled with the reality of only indirect measurement of most essential facts due to being buried under miles of earth. One look at the number of patents held for use in the industry is testimony to the highly technical nature of this field.
          Key aspect Edit
One key aspect of this profession is excellence. Where mistakes are measured in millions of dollars petroleum engineers will be held to a higher standard. Deepwater operations can be compared to space travel in terms of technical challenges. Arctic conditions and conditions of extreme heat have to be contended with. High Temperature and High Pressure (HTHP) environments that have become increasingly commonplace in today's operations require the petroleum engineer to be saavy in topics as wide ranging as thermohydraulics, geomechanics, and intelligent systems.

Welcome
The primary areas of petroleum engineering are drilling engineering, well completion, production engineering, reservoir evaluation and reservoir engineering. Undergraduate students take basic courses in all of these disciplines.  Graduate work allows the student to focus on one particular area and develop additional expertise.  Most of the research in petroleum engineering at UAF is conducted in the Petroleum Development Laboratory and include basic and advanced studies of oil displacement, reservoir rock and fluid properties of Alaskan oil fields, thermal recovery, miscible flooding, improved water flooding, gas hydrates, gas-to-liquids (GTL) conversion and transportation, coalbed methane, drilling and production.
Petroleum Engineering Degrees
The deadlines for admission application to be considered for departmental review are February 15th for fall semester and September 15th for spring semester.
