Guide to College Majors in Petroleum Engineering
Oil prices have fallen lately. We include this news for the benefit of gas stations, which otherwise wouldn't learn of it for six months.
Bill Tammeus, in Toronto's National Newspaper, 1991
What is Petroleum Engineering?
If you're interested in earth sciences - and you like the idea of getting paid to travel the world - consider becoming a petroleum engineer. Petroleum engineers seek out oil and gas reservoirs beneath the earth's surface. They develop the safest and most efficient methods of bringing those resources to the surface. And as demands increase for alternative energy, some forward-thinking petroleum engineers are turning their talents to working on clean energy products that produce fewer harmful carbon emissions.
Many petroleum engineers travel the world or live in foreign countries wherever their explorations take them to find and recover valuable reserves. These travels can lead to the deserts, high seas, mountains, and frigid regions of the world in order to find untapped sources of energy for the world's population.
The work of petroleum engineers keeps the world running. They help provide the energy to heat our homes, cook our food, and fuel our cars. However, petroleum engineers study more than just combustible material. Manufacturers use petroleum to create more than three hundred everyday products from medicines and cosmetics to plastics and textiles.

Program Description Petroleum engineering is not a narrowly-focused engineering discipline. In addition to having a petroleum engineering and earth science background, a petroleum engineer must have a good understanding of basic engineering, the natural sciences and mathematics. Our mission is to educate engineers for the worldwide petroleum industry at the undergraduate and graduate levels, perform research that enhances the state-of-the-art in petroleum technology, and to serve the industry and public good through professional societies and public service.
Beyond the Classroom The department offers many semester-abroad opportunities. Popular exchange programs include:
    • Mining University in Leoben, Austria Technical University in Delft, Holland University of Adelaide, Adelaide, Australia
Exchange opportunities also exist around the world in areas such as China, Poland, Ireland, Italy Kazakhstan, the Middle East and South America. Qualified undergraduate and graduate students from each school can attend the other for one semester and receive full transfer credit back at the home university. Facilities Ground-breaking for Marquez Hall is expected in 2009. This new state-of-the-art home for the Petroleum Engineering Department will include a visualization center as well as numerous laboratories and classrooms equipped with the technology needed to keep students and research on the cutting edge.

What is LTRO all about.
LTRO is all about Locating The current Remaining Oil or gas, and assessing future opportunities in a producing field. It is all about generating displays and assessments to help fully understand past field performance. By understanding the past field performance we can generate work programs to get at the remaining reserves. This is the basic premise behind our reservoir management endeavors.

Joseph Ocheja and Anton Skopich found the intersection between Kogi, Nigeria and Shymkent, Kazakhstan in Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S.A. Joseph and Anton, who are both studying petroleum engineering in the world-renown College of Engineering and Natural Sciences at The University of Tulsa, have become close friends. They met on Anton's first day at TU. "I was new to campus," recalls Anton. "Joseph was the resident assistant in the dorm, and he was great - plus, his name was easy to remember." "As the RA, I helped incoming students get acquainted with the campus and make a smooth transition to TU," says Joseph, who is also a University Ambassador, someone who gives tours of the University to prospective students. "I'd been at TU for three semesters by the time Anton arrived," Joseph recalls, "and it turned out that we lived on the same floor in Twin Towers." Both Joseph and Anton are fully engaged in all that the University offers. Joseph continues to be a university ambassador, and recently talked Anton into taking over for him as president of The Association of International Students. Anton is also an officer in the TU chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Petroleum Engineering Career Overview
Discovery of natural sources, examination of natural characteristics, and development of modern machinery for extraction and processing—all fall under the scope of petroleum engineers Petroleum engineers are engaged in the globe world for oil and natural gas reservoirs. After they discover there reservoirs, they are involved in working with geologists and other specialists for examining the geologic formation and the nature of the rock containing the reservoir, determining the drilling methods to be used, and monitoring the drilling and production activities. They also work on designing tools and operation procedures in order to gain efficiency in the recovery of oil and gas. Computers are used extensively by petroleum engineers in order to calculate the nest possible method of recovery of petroleum from different reservoirs. Models and designs of drilling and other equipment are also simulated on computers.
