Welcome to Pharmacology
The Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is dedicated to training researchers of the highest caliber. Taught by leading innovators in the field of pharmacology, our students receive a strong foundation in the basic sciences, but at the same time are encouraged to find unique ways of using that science to foster new discoveries. Our department educates both medical and graduate students in the principles underlying the distribution, metabolism, mechanism of action and toxicity of therapeutic agents or substances. The fundamental principles of basic and clinical pharmacology and therapeutics are conveyed through an interdisciplinary teaching effort that brings together faculty from this department and other basic science and clinical departments. At the graduate level, the department's interests are best reflected in the Molecular Toxicology and Pharmacology track of the Molecular Medicine Graduate Program, although departmental faculty and their students are affiliated with other tracks and programs as well. Within the department there are several defined areas of study from which to choose, including neuropharmacology, oncopharmacology and mechanistic toxicology. All incorporate training in modern techniques of pharmacology, with variable training in new drug development vs. better understanding of the actions of existing drugs and toxins.

These tips were either posted by members of the Interpsych psycho-pharm discussion list run by Ivan Goldberg , MD, or emailed directly to me. I have edited them. This site is intended primarily as a resource for list members, but access is unrestricted, and those who take medication are welcome along with those who prescribe it. "We are not priests with hidden holy books and a bird language which other people cannot understand." If you take medication, it's important to be informed, but don't make any adjustments without the approval of your physician, who knows your medical condition, how you've responded to medication in the past, etc. These tips are just that tips and not (with some exceptions) the results of scientific studies. They should not be construed as providing diagnosis, medical advice, or treatment. They have worked before and might work again, but they are not necessarily generalizable and should not be applied without attention to the particular situation and the involvement of a knowledgeable physician.

http://www.cftech.com/BrainBank/OTHERREFERENCE/HEALTH/StimulantPlants.html
Stimulant Plants
Neuropharmacology is the study of drugs which affect the central nervous system. These include psychotropic drugs that affect mood and behavior, anesthetics, sedatives, analgesics, anticonvulsants, narcotics, hypnotics and a variety of other substances. While the precise mechanism of action is unknown for most of these drugs, a large number of neuropharmacological agents appear to be involved primarily with synaptic events. The Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (DPET) contains a core group of investigators who study neuroactive compounds at the molecular, cellular and behavioral level. Psychopharmacology is the study of the effects of drugs on behavior, combining methods of psychology and pharmacology. Psychopharmacologists carryout their duties within a number of different settings, including academia, government, private research, industry and clinic. The study of the effects of drugs on behavior has been productively examined in human as well as nonhuman populations, both within and outside the laboratory. The central theme running through the research in this division is the use of behavioral principles as they interact with the effects of pharmacological agents and environmental events.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For the journal, see Psychopharmacology (journal) An arrangement of psychoactive drugs Psychopharmacology (from Greek psȳkhē , "breath, life, soul"; pharmakon , "drug"; and -logia ) is the study of drug-induced changes in mood sensation , thinking, and behavior. The field of psychopharmacology studies a wide range of substances with various types of psychoactive properties. The professional and commercial fields of pharmacology and psychopharmacology do not mainly focus on psychedelic or recreational drugs , as the majority of studies are conducted for the development, study, and use of drugs for the modification of behavior and the alleviation of symptoms, particularly in the treatment of mental disorders psychiatric medication ). While studies are conducted on all psychoactives by both fields, psychopharmacology focuses primarily on the psychoactive and chemical interactions with the brain Psychoactive drugs may originate from natural sources such as plants and animals, or from artificial sources such as chemical synthesis in the laboratory. These drugs interact with particular target sites or receptors found in the

INTRODUCTION
Could we live happily ever after? Perhaps. One's interest in the genetically pre-programmed states of sublimity sketched in The Hedonistic Imperative is tempered by the knowledge that one is unlikely to be around to enjoy them. It's all very well being told our descendants will experience every moment of their lives as a magical epiphany. For emotional primitives and our loved ones at present, most of life's moments bring nothing of the sort . In centuries to come, our emotional well-being may indeed surpass anything that human legacy wetware can even contemplate. Right now, however, any future Post-Darwinian Era of paradise-engineering can seem an awfully long way off. Mainstream society today has a desperately underdeveloped conception of mental health. There's clearly a strong causal link between the raw biological capacity to experience happiness and the extent to which one's life is felt to be worthwhile. High-minded philosophy treatises should complicate but not confuse the primacy of the
