Obama the Pragmatist
The NY Times is reporting on Harvard historian James T. Kloppenberg's foray into President Obama's intellectual roots in, apparently, American Pragmatism . From the article (links mine), To Mr. Kloppenberg the philosophy that has guided President Obama most consistently is pragmatism, a uniquely American system of thought developed at the end of the 19th century by William James John Dewey and Charles Sanders Peirce . It is a philosophy that grew up after Darwin published his theory of evolution and the Civil War reached its bloody end. More and more people were coming to believe that chance rather than providence guided human affairs, and that dogged certainty led to violence. Submitted by Don Berkich on Wed, 10/27/2010 - 13:22

Philosophy
The philosophy major at SDSU explores and seeks to understand values and the nature of reality. Through the study of philosophy, questions like the following are asked about existence and experience: What is truth? What is beauty? Is there an ultimate reality? Philosophy studies the types of questions that most other subject areas are unable to address fully. There are four different ways these questions are characteristically investigated in the philosophy major at SDSU. They are approached historically , by studying the history of philosophy from the ancient Greeks to the present; analytically , by carefully examining the meanings and interrelationships of ideas; creatively , by allowing students to explore imaginative new answers to these difficult questions; and critically , by training students in the art of rigorously evaluating significant claims.
Program Overview
Students will take an introduction to logic course at the lower-division preparatory level. Upper-division work will include courses in the History of Philosophy, covering the period between Ancient Western Philosophy and Nineteenth Century European Philosophy. Additional courses may include Social and Political Philosophy, Aesthetics and Philosophy of Literature, and Philosophy of Science. Deductive Logic and one or two elective courses are also included among the major requirements.

Hyponoetics postulates a new mode of thinking - Paranoesis or Transrational Thinking - that enables us to access any information in the universe. Hyponoetics is NOT a religious or spiritual philosophy, but, on the contrary, advocates principles of rationality (critical thinking), philosophical atheism, humanism, and science. Definition of philosophy
    Etymology
According to its etymology, the word "philosophy" ( philosophia , from philein , to love, and sophia , wisdom) means "the love of wisdom". This sense appears again in sapientia , the word used in the Middle Ages to designate philosophy. In the early stages of Greek , as of every other, civilization, the boundary line between philosophy and other departments of human knowledge was not sharply defined, and philosophy was understood to mean "every striving towards knowledge ". This sense of the word survives in Herodotus (I, xxx) and Thucydides (II, xl). In the ninth century of our era, Alcuin , employing it in the same sense, says that nature , and such knowledge of things human and Divine as is possible for man P.L. , CI, 952). In its proper acceptation, philosophy does not mean the aggregate of the human sciences , but "the general science of things in the universe by their ultimate determinations and reasons"; or again, "the intimate

While every other science aims at investigating a specific area of knowledge, such as physics or psychology, philosophy has been defined as “thinking about thinking.” At the same time, as expressed by its Greek etymology, philosophy is the love of wisdom. Traditionally at least, it is not the pursuit of knowledge for knowledge’s sake, but rather the attempt to discover the meaning and purpose of existence, including through intellectual means, but including also self-reflection, discipline, and religious practice and inquiry. Though the term philosophy is of Western origin and implies a kind of investigation typical of western culture, it has its equivalents in the various other cultures of the world, notably India , China and the Middle East.
