v ... e The philosophy of science is concerned with the assumptions, foundations, methods and implications of science . In addition to these central problems of science as a whole, many philosophers of science also consider problems that apply to particular sciences (e.g. philosophy of biology or philosophy of physics ). Some philosophers of science also use contemporary results in science to reach conclusions about philosophy. Although most practitioners are philosophers, several prominent scientists have contributed to the field and still do. Other prominent scientists have felt that the practical effect on their work is limited: “Philosophy of science is about as useful to scientists as ornithology is to birds,” according to physicist Richard Feynman Philosophy of science focuses on metaphysical epistemic and semantic aspects of science.

Barnum) The philosophy of science , a sub-branch of epistemology , is the branch of philosophy that studies the philosophical assumptions, foundations, and implications of science, including the natural sciences such as physics, chemistry , and biology , the social sciences such as psychology, history , and sociology , and sometimes—especially beginning about the second decade of the twentieth century—the formal sciences, such as logic , mathematics, set theory, and proof theory. In this last respect, the philosophy of science is often closely related to philosophy of language philosophy of mathematics , and to formal systems of logic and formal languages. The twentieth century witnessed a proliferation of research and literature on the philosophy of science. Debate is robust amongst philosophers of science and within the discipline much remains inconclusive. For nearly every assertion advanced in the discipline, a philosopher can be found who will disagree with it in some fashion.

René Descartes The 'philosophy of science' is the branch of philosophy that studies the philosophical assumptions, foundations, and implications of science , including the formal sciences natural sciences , and social sciences . In this respect, the philosophy of science is closely related to epistemology and the philosophy of language . Note that issues of scientific ethics are not usually considered to be part of the philosophy of science; they are studied in such fields as bioethics and science studies In particular, the philosophy of science considers the following topics: the character and the development of concepts and terms, propositions and hypotheses, arguments and conclusions, as they function in science; the manner in which science explains natural phenomena and predicts natural occurrences; the types of reasoning that are used to arrive at scientific conclusions; the formulation, scope, and limits of scientific method ; the means that should be used for determining when scientific information has adequate objective support; and the implications of scientific methods and models, along with the technology that arises from scientific knowledge for the larger society.

In this respect, the philosophy of science is closely related to epistemology and ontology . It seeks to explain such things as: the nature of scientific statements and concepts; the way in which they are produced; how science explains, predicts and, through technology, harnesses nature; the means for determining the validity of information; the formulation and use of the scientific method; the types of reasoning used to arrive at conclusions; and the implications of scientific methods and models for the larger society, and for the sciences themselves. Nature of scientific statements and concepts
Science draws conclusions about the way the world is and the way in which scientific theory relates to the world. Science draws upon evidence from experimentation, logical deduction, and rational thought in order to examine the world and the individuals that exist within society. In making observations of the nature of individuals and their surroundings, science seeks to explain the concepts that are entwined with everyday lives.

Course Description:
This course serves as an introduction to the main issues in philosophy of science, with special emphasis on the development of science as an intellectual process in cultural and historical context. It stresses, first, the role scientific developments have played in shaping philosophy and philosophy of science and, second, the influence of philosophy and philosophy of science on the development of science. In addition, it surveys noteworthy philosophical accounts of the scientific enterprise, including characterizations of confirmation, explanation, scientific realism, the nature of theories, and the growth of scientific knowledge. We begin with an overview of competing contemporary philosophies of science. In succeeding weeks, the approach of the course will be primarily historical as we take up the history of philosophy of science and contemporaneous developments in science. Episodes to be covered include the Copernican-Galilean-Keplerian-Newtonian revolution, the transition from phlogiston to oxygen theories in chemistry, the probabilistic revolution in physics, atomism and quantum mechanics, and various other topics. The latter part of the course aims at judging, on the basis of the background acquired in the course, which among various competing accounts get things right.
