ORIENTATION
"The Garden of Eden was lost for partaking of the fruit of the
tree of knowledge of good and evil, lost not for lust but for
curiosity, not for sex but for science" (Nelson Goodman).
In this course, neither fluency nor even passing acquaintance
with the history and practice of Western science is presupposed;
curiosity, on the other hand, is. Curiosity, notwithstanding the
proverbial fate of the proverbial cat, lies at the marrow of all intellectual passion—where art , science, and philosophy cohere as one single instinct: the irrepressible human need to explore, to explain, to inquire. Course Objectives T he course will provide an overview of traditional problems and some recent developments in the philosophy of science. While a number of specific theories and agenda (e.g., relativity theory, quantum mechanics, sociobiology, artificial intelligence) are discussed, emphasis is placed on the conceptual consequences modern science imposes generally on our basic philosophies of knowledge and nature. Topics in both the natural and social sciences will be covered; after considering the experimental and/or theoretical results obtained by selected research communities within the special sciences, students will be encouraged to advance and criticize a variety of philosophical views concerning the aims, methods, and achievements of these sciences. Philosophy of Science
        The philosophy of science seeks to clarify the objectives and means used by scientists, and what is the reliability of scientific theories. Science is popularly viewed as a cumulative and progressive activity. However this view has profound philosophical implications, and in fact the effort to define the nature of science is in itself part of the history of philosophy. Aristotle 's writings on nature make him the world's first real scientist, though his conclusions have long been superceded. His contributions are so great that he stands alongside Plato as one of the greatest thinkers of the ancient world. He said, in contrast to Plato, that the material world is real and not a creation of eternal forms. He taught that individual things combine form and matter in ways that determine how they grow and change. Aristotle was also the founder of formal logic.

      The science debate: Evolution and / or creation For best comprehension, read first Emerging LOTA theories The LOTA philosophy of science and its emerging LOTA theories describe the evolution of self organizing patterns as a fundamental phenomena that is independent of space-time. It sees Darwinian type evolution theories, which follow the arrow of time in space-time, as a limited one dimensional interpretation of a much more complex pattern of interactions. Indeed, looking through the lens of Darwinian evolution theories, we can be easily fooled through its masking effect on the broader fundamentals of self organization. A broadening in our thinking patterns on evolution would make us aware of the vast amount of literature already available in support of such additional dimension(s) to evolution. Moreover, fundamental to the evolution of all self organizing patterns is the phenomena of Creative-R, the ultimate creative and omnipresent force from which the universe emerges. In short, the creative force of Creative-R and the forces of evolution are both present in our reality. The LOTA philosophy of science views 'creation' and 'evolution' as forces that are both present and complementary.

    The Nature and Philosophy of Science
    Introduction Scientists are unbiased observers who use the scientific method to conclusively confirm and conclusively falsify various theories. These experts have no preconceptions in gathering the data and logically derive theories from these objective observations. One great strength of science is that it’s self-correcting, because scientists readily abandon theories when they are shown to be irrational. Although such eminent views of science have been accepted by many people, they are almost completely untrue. Data can neither conclusively confirm nor conclusively falsify theories, there really is no such thing as the scientific method, data become somewhat subjective in practice, and scientists have displayed a surprisingly fierce loyalty to their theories. There have been many misconceptions of what science is and is not. I’ll discuss why these misconstruals are inaccurate later, but first I’d like to begin by talking about some of the basics of what science is. Science is a project whose goal is to obtain knowledge of the natural world. The philosophy of science is a discipline that deals with the system of science itself. It examines science’s structure, components, techniques, assumptions, limitations, and so forth.

    1. The Paper
    This course will present some core subject areas of analytical philosophy of science. No in-depth knowledge of any science is presupposed for this course, nor are any mathematics beyond basic algebra. The bulk of the course is concerned with ‘general' philosophy of science rather than with the philosophies of specific sciences (such as the philosophy of quantum mechanics or biology). There will however be one lecture on the philosophy of space and time at the end of the course in order to convey the main idea of what the philosophy of a special science amounts to. The first term covers the problem of induction, theories of confirmation, probabilities, the nature of scientific theories, laws of nature, and scientific explanation. The second term covers reductionism, the realism antirealism debate, social constructivism, feminism, causation, and the philosophy of space and time. BACK TO TOP
