http://www.drury.edu/ess/philsci/bell.html
Notes on David Peat, Einstein's Moon: Bell's Theorem and the Curious Quest for Quantum Reality History and Philosophy of Science - Fall, 1997 - Dr. Ess Outline: "Bohm, Bell - and Boom! The End of Modern Dualism" The End of Cartesian Dualism: Physics (re)discovers Philosophy over against Cartesian and especially 19th ct. positivist dualisms which separate physics and philosophy - the emergence of quantum mechanics forces physicists to be become philosophers again. Indeed, the logic of complementarity which q.m. requires ripples into a larger (re)turn to complementary relationships between physics, philosophy, and religion.
(In other terms: Cartesian dualism defines both 19th ct. positivism and fundamentalism as "mirror images" of one another: each agree that only one mode of knowing can be true - and the alternative mode(s) must be false: Positivism Fundamentalism ("calculative") reason (= natural science)
"religion" "religion"
reason/science The end of Cartesian dualism thus undermines the dualistic epistemologies of both positivism and fundamentalism.)

Feminist Epistemology and Philosophy of Science
First published Wed Aug 9, 2000; substantive revision Thu Aug 12, 2010 The central concept of feminist epistemology is that of a situated knower, and hence of situated knowledge: knowledge that reflects the particular perspectives of the subject. Feminist philosophers are interested in how gender situates knowing subjects. They have articulated three main approaches to this question: feminist standpoint theory, feminist postmodernism, and feminist empiricism. Different conceptions of how gender situates knowers also inform feminist approaches to the central problems of the field: grounding feminist criticisms of science and feminist science, defining the proper roles of social and political values in inquiry, evaluating ideals of objectivity and rationality, and reforming structures of epistemic authority.
1. Situated Knowers
Feminist epistemology conceives of knowers as situated in particular relations to what is known and to other knowers. What is known, and the way that it is known, thereby reflects the situation or perspective of the knower. Here we are concerned with

You arc teaching a philosophy class that covers a number of different topics. You want to spend a week or so on, let's say, scientific realism. Naturally, you want to provide the students with some accessible readings on the subject. Moreover, you want to choose readings from both realists and anti-realists, partly so that the students will see both sides of the issue, and partly to give the students a glimpse of philosophers engaging in debate with one another. What you end up with, however, are readings that end up talking past one another: no two authors agree on what scientific realism is, so the realists are defending views that the anti-realists are not attacking. The students come away confused, and without any sense of the constructive value of debate. Students: Has this ever happened to you? You are taking a philosophy class that covers a number of different topics. One of the topics covered is, let's say, scientific realism. There are assigned readings on the topic: they are challenging, but with some effort on your part and some help from your instructor, you get a pretty good sense of what each author is saying. The problem is that these authors seem to be talking about different things. Your professor says that they are debating with one another, but you just don't see it in the texts.

International Studies in the Philosophy of Science is a scholarly journal dedicated to publishing original research in philosophy of science and in philosophically informed history and sociology of science. Its scope includes the foundations and methodology of the natural, social, and human sciences, philosophical implications of particular scientific theories, and broader philosophical reflection on science. The editors invite contributions not only from philosophers, historians, and sociologists of science, but also from researchers in the sciences. The journal publishes articles from a wide variety of countries and philosophical traditions. The editors encourage participation in the annual Philosophy of Science conference at the Inter-University Centre, Dubrovnik, a forum for high-quality research and international debate in philosophy of science.

The philosophy of science
In this website, we use a practical checklist to get a basic picture of what science is and a flexible flowchart to depict how science works. For most everyday purposes, this gives us a fairly complete picture of what science is and is not. However, there is an entire field of rigorous academic study that deals specifically with what science is, how it works, and the logic through which we build scientific knowledge. This branch of philosophy is handily called the philosophy of science. Many of the ideas that we present in this website are a rough synthesis of some new and some old ideas from the philosophy of science. Despite its straightforward name, the field is complex and remains an area of current inquiry. Philosophers of science actively study such questions as:
  • What is a law of nature? Are there any in non-physical sciences like biology and psychology? What kind of data can be used to distinguish between real causes and accidental regularities? How much evidence and what kinds of evidence do we need before we accept hypotheses Why do scientists continue to rely on models and theories which they know are at least partially inaccurate (like Newton's physics)?

  • science = order, explanation, rational methods, logic
The main purpose of science is to trace, within the chaos and flux of phenomena, a consistent structure with order and meaning. This is called the philosophy of rationalism , rational as in conforming with reason. And the purpose of scientific understanding is to coordinate our experiences and bring them into a logical system
  • science motivated by need for control of unknown
  • discovery of pattern and structure are key to scientific problem solving
  • science based on the idea that the Universe is rational, i.e. natural
Thoughout history, intellectual scientific efforts have been directed towards the discovery of pattern, system and structure, with a special emphasis on order. Why? Primarily, the control of the unpredictable driven by the fear of the unknown. Those who pursue answers are known as scientists . The main occupation of a scientist is problem solving with the goal of understanding the Universe. Science is founded on the hope that the world is rational in all its observable aspects. Its possible that there may be some facets of reality which lie beyond the power of human reasoning, that there may be things with explanations that we could never grasp, or no explanation at all, but the fact that the world is rational is connected with the fact that it is ordered.

  • science is not about truth, its about testability

Are there kinds of explanation? Do explanations correspond to domains of knowledge? Why do we seek explanations, and what do they accomplish? How central are causes to explanation? The essays draw on work in the history and philosophy of science, the philosophy of mind and language, the development of concepts in children, conceptual change in adults, and reasoning in human and artificial systems. They also introduce emerging perspectives on explanation from computer science, linguistics, and anthropology.

Welcome to the Unit for the History and Philosophy of Science The unit for HPS offers a balanced program of history, philosophy and social studies of science and medicine, extending from our first year undergraduate unit of study to research leading to the PhD degree. Also, jointly with the Centre for Values, Ethics, and the Law in Medicine, the Unit for History and Philosophy of Science has organised a postgraduate program in Bioethics. History and Philosophy of Science is a fascinating discipline situated at the cross-roads of science and arts. It examines past and current developments in all areas of science, technology, and medicine from a range of humanistic perspectives, using socio-historical and philosophical techniques to explore their social, political, cultural, and conceptual ramifications. HPS is an ideal way to critically engage with science and its social and cultural significance.
