See also: Race Physical anthropology developed in the 19th century, prior to the rise of Charles Darwin 's theory of natural selection , also known as the theory of evolution , and Gregor Mendel 's theory of genetics . Physical anthropology was so called because all of its data was physical (fossils, especially human bones). With the rise of Darwinian theory and the modern synthesis , anthropologists had access to new forms of data, and many began to call themselves "biological anthropologists." Some of the early branches of physical anthropology, such as early anthropometry , are now rejected as pseudoscience . Metrics such as the cephalic index were used to derive behavioral characteristics. Two of the earliest founders of scientific physical anthropology were Paul Broca and Franz Boas

These unapproved articles are subject to edit intro Physical anthropology , or biological anthropology , is the anthropological study of humans as a biological species. Areas studied include human evolution and genetics, the human and primate fossil record, and the biology and variation of current human and primate populations. Physical anthropology arguably started in the 17 th century, with an anatomical description of a young chimpanzee which was titled "Ourang-Outang sive Homo sylvestris : or the Anatomy of a Pygmie" and written by Edward Tyson in 1699. Physical anthropology was so called because all of its data was physical (fossils, especially human bones). With the rise of Darwinian theory and the modern synthesis, anthropologists had access to new forms of data, and many began to call themselves "biological anthropologists." Some of early studies in physical anthropology, notably in anthropometry, are now rejected as worthless. Metrics such as the cephalic index were used to derive behavioral characteristics. Prof. Don Johanson, famed discoverer of "Lucy", and local field workers at a dig in Hadar, Ethiopia. Physical anthropology focuses on understanding human biology and behavior within the framework of evolution and examines the interface between biology and culture. Research in this area addresses such questions as: What were the evolutionary, environmental, and cultural forces that resolved a diversity of hominin species into one? How diverse (biologically) are modern humans and primates, and how have they adapted to the environments in which they live? How have various diseases coevolved with humans and other primates? How do cultural changes and biological relationships among people affect patterns of disease transmission? What are the genetic and environmental susceptibility factors of various diseases? At ASU, 15 faculty members and over 40 graduate students are actively engaged in examining these questions.

Welcome to AAPA
by Ed Hagen last modified Jun 30, 2009 11:53 AM Physical anthropology is a biological science that deals with the adaptations, variability, and evolution of human beings and their living and fossil relatives. Because it studies human biology in the context of human culture and behavior, physical anthropology is also a social science. The AAPA is the world's leading professional organization for physical anthropologists. Formed by 83 charter members in 1930, the AAPA now has an international membership of over 1,700. The Association's annual meetings draw more than a thousand scientists and students from all over the world. We now publish RSS feeds
NESCent CALL FOR PROPOSALS - SABBATICAL SCHOLARS AND COLLABORATIVE WORKING GROUPS
by Ed Hagen Proposals for Sabbaticals and for collaborative working groups (Working Groups and Catalysis Meetings) are now being accepted at The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent). We are looking to support innovative approaches to outstanding problems in evolutionary biology. In particular, proposals that have a clear interdisciplinary focus, or involve evolutionary concepts in non-traditional disciplines, are strongly encouraged, as are proposals that demonstrate international participation and a mix of senior and emerging researchers, including graduate students.
