Welcome to My Site This originally started as a place to post my thoughts on the world. No, I couldn't just have a blog like everyone else. Although, I do have a blog , like everyone else. Now this site has turned into a learning tool for me to practice my web design skills since I tend to be called upon to make websites. Hopefully you will learn something about me and the things I am interested in while I hone my skills. Anyway, have a look around. Feel free to contact me. Tell me your thoughts. And check back sometimes. You never know if I will find something earth-shattering to post. Thanks, Darby

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania Anthropology became part of the Penn curriculum in 1886 when Daniel Brinton was appointed Professor of Archeology and Linguistics at the University’s newly created graduate school. Brinton was an early proponent of anthropology’s four-field approach to the study of human societies, encompassing cultural, linguistic, biological, and archeological methods of research. The first PhD in anthropology was awarded in 1909 to the ethnologist Frank Speck, who became the chair of a formally constituted Department of Anthropology in 1913. Over the next century, members of the Department played leadership roles in anthropology and allied disciplines, serving as members of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as Presidents of national associations in several social science disciplines, and as Directors of Penn’s various area studies programs.

http://history-world.org/anthropology.htm
Anthropology The International History Project date: 2001 The science that studies human cultures is called anthropology. It is a discipline that deals with the origins and development of human societies and the differences between them. The word anthropology is derived from two Greek words: anthropos meaning "man" or "human"; and logos, meaning "thought" or "reason." Anthropologists attempt, by investigating the whole range of human development and behavior, to achieve a total description of cultural and social phenomena. The Spheres of Anthropology The science of anthropology is divided into two major disciplines, physical anthropology and cultural anthropology. Each of these is basically an independent science, although specialists in one field frequently consult and cooperate with scholars in the other. Physical anthropology is generally classified as a natural science, while cultural anthropology is considered a social science. Physical anthropology is concerned with the biological aspects of human beings. In trying to learn about racial differences, human origins, and evolution, the physical anthropologist studies fossil remains and observes the behavior of other primates. Primates are an order of mammals that includes human beings as well as apes and monkeys.

NON-ACADEMIC CAREERS IN PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY
The purpose of this brochure is to inform physical anthropology graduate students of career opportunities in non-academic settings. In a concern with the future professional careers of students completing their graduate educations in physical anthropology (particularly at the doctoral level), the American Association of Physical Anthropologists has established a standing committee devoted to career development. This brochure is one of the Committee's educational efforts to inform the student constituency of the Association as to the nature and diversity of professional careers in addition to those in anthropology departments in colleges and universities. There are many academic careers for appropriately trained physical anthropologists. In addition to the most traditional, that of faculty member of an anthropology department, they involve academic affiliations with community colleges and a number of different non-anthropology academic units within four year colleges and universities. These include medical schools; indeed, currently one in eight American physical anthropologists has some formal professional affiliation with a medical school, most frequently in departments of anatomy. Departments of genetics, zoology, and biological sciences are also logical academic units in which one might find physical anthropologists.

30. UMSL - Connecting Human Origin And Cultural Diversity
An outreach program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis that offers instruction to people of all ages in both cultural and physical anthropology. Site features lesson plans and educational resources.
http://chocd.umsl.edu/
The Connecting Human Origin and Cultural Diversity Program was founded in Fall, 1995, as a joint venture between the Anthropology Department, the College of Education, and the Maybuye Center (Archive of the African National Congress) at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. It is administered through the College of Education and housed on the UMSL south campus in the Villa and LeGras buildings. The Anthropology Department provides expertise in understanding human origin and cultural diversity; the College of Education provides expertise in designing curriculum for elementary through high school levels. Building on the 21st Century COE and foundations of anthropological knowledge, the Center has designed a 4-12 curriculum. Currently, no comprehensive anthropology curriculum exists in the U.S. In addition, the Program advises classroom teachers in the development of social justice and cultural awareness curriculum that enhances their standard subject presentations and compliments the NCSS and MAP standards. The Program has an advisory board consisting of leading educators, clergy, businesspeople, and civic leaders from the culturally diverse community of St. Louis.

physical anthropology,
branch of anthropology concerned with the comparative study of human evolution, classification, and physical variation, primarily using techniques involving measurement and observation. A brief treatment of physical anthropology follows. For full treatment, see MACROPAEDIA: Biological Sciences: Physical anthropology Physical anthropology is concerned with clarifying the biological emergence and evolution of the human race; determining the differences between humans and the other primates; and classifying the physical differences between various human races. Modern physical anthropology began to take shape in the first half of the 19th century and received enormous impetus from the theory of evolution as put forward by Charles Darwin in On the Origin of Species (1859). Darwin's book The Descent of Man (1871) also proved important as the first scientifically valid hypothesis of mankind's origins. Between 1859 and 1900 anthropologists recognized that the human species had an evolutionary history extending back several hundred thousand years, rather than just a few thousand as previously thought. The discovery of the principles of genetics and of the ABO blood groups early in the 20th century helped physical anthropologists in their efforts to understand human variations and the differences between races, and the development of methods of relative and absolute dating has enabled anthropologists to determine the age of hominid fossils and other significant artifacts.

Anthropology (from the Greek word , "human" or "person") consists of the study of humanity (see genus Homo ). The discipline is a holistic study, concerned with all humans, at all times, in all humanity's dimensions. Anthropology is traditionally distinguished from other disciplines by its emphasis on cultural relativity, in-depth examination of context, and cross-cultural comparisons. More recently, it has also distinguished itself as a leader in culture critique and post-colonialism. Anthropology is methodologically diverse, using both qualitative and quantitative methods, such as firsthand case studies of living cultures , careful excavations of material remains, and interpretations of both living and extinct linguistic practices. In North America and other Western cultures, anthropology is traditionally broken down into four main divisions: physical anthropology, archaeology cultural anthropology , and linguistic anthropology. Each sub-discipline uses different techniques, taking different approaches to study human beings at all points in time. Through bringing together the results of all these endeavors humans can hope to better understand themselves, and learn to live in harmony, fulfilling their potential as individuals and societies, taking care of each other and the earth that is their home.

Anthropology and Applied Archaeology
Anthropology, the study of humanity past and present, has four subdivisions:
  • Archaeology : The study of past cultures Physical Anthropology : The study of the human physical variation Ethnology : The cross-cultural study of today's societies Linguistics : The study of human communication as one important aspect of peoples and culture
From these viewpoints, the discipline brings together studies of peoples into a meaningful whole. Because of this orientation, anthropology is steadily growing in importance in education, industry, business, and national and international government, as well as in politics. Instruction is supplemented by an anthropological research division known as the Agency for Conservation Archaeology, as well as anthropological museums: the Blackwater Draw Museum , the Miles Anthropological Museum, and the Blackwater Draw National Historical Landmark site (the Clovis archaeological type site). Research plays an important part in the department. Heavy emphasis is placed upon pre-Columbian Native American archaeological studies and the Southwestern United States. The University's location provides a unique vantage point for studying the peopling of the New World. All faculty members of the department are involved in research on a national and/or international basis.

38. Anthropology - Introduction
Major and minor programs with a concentration in physical anthropology, archaeology or social anthropology. Features course syllabi, faculty profiles and department events. Located in Wellesley.
http://www.wellesley.edu/Anthropology/intro.html
Department of Anthropology Welcome to the Wellesley College Anthropology Department! Although we are a small department, all of the conventional fields of anthropology are covered by the faculty. You may concentrate in physical anthropology archaeology , or social anthropology Our courses cover Africa, Latin America, and Asia, as well as the culture of the United States. Many of them explore contemporary issues in the Third World and the relationship between the United States and the Third World. We offer a broad range of courses in the cross-cultural study of family, gender, law, economics, and technology. In various ways, our courses cover the relationship between anthropology and history. Furthermore, the Department has an ongoing cooperative relationship with MIT and Brandeis University. You may complement our course selection with courses from either institution. If you are interested in archaeology, you might, after some initial work, wish to participate in the Boston-wide Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology, which will give you practical experience concerning technological processes and their development. There are opportunities to participate in archaeological field projects both here and abroad. For anthropology majors, there are also field trips and urban internships. Department Office: Pendleton East, Room 331
