The departmental collections are dominated by the Hamann-Todd Osteological Collection. This collection is the largest of its kind in the world. It consists of 3,100 modern human and more than 900 non-human primates skeletons. Each human skeleton is accompanied by a wealth of information including records of height, weight, age at death, gender, race, cause of death and over 60 measurements taken on the cadavers.

    Innovation for the Digital Humanities
The ACL focuses on information management and delivery for the Humanities, with particular emphasis on the spatial and temporal dimensions (event modelling, spatial searching, mapping and map animation) and on new opportunities presented by the Internet (academic knowledge management, online databases and web mapping).
Our work is by no means restricted to archaeological projects. Most of our methodological development work is intentionally generic, and more than half our projects fall within the broader fields of history, cultural heritage management and general Humanities scholarship.
Please visit our flagship project, the Heurist generic Humanities bookmarking/bibliographic/research database, which is the database infrastructure for award winning projects such as the Dictionary of Sydney and ABC Innovation Gallipoli: The First Day. Heurist has been provided as a free service on our servers since 2006. A new peer-to-peer verion of Heurist, Vsn 3 aka H3, will be released as an Open Source project towards the end of third quarter 2010.

New York Consortium in Evolutionary Primatology (NYCEP)
http://www.nycep.org ] The New York Consortium in Evolutionary Primatology (NYCEP) is an integrated graduate training and research program in primate behavioral and evolutionary biology, funded by an NSF training grant. NYCEP involves faculty from the City University of New York, Columbia University, and New York University and selected staff of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). This unique consortium links a group of over thirty evolutionary biologists in New York City whose research focuses on human as well as nonhuman primates from the perspectives of morphology, paleontology, systematics, molecular and population genetics, behavior and ecology, and conservation biology. NYCEP also offers the student a chance to apply this multidisciplinary training in the field before undertaking independent research. Faculty and associates have field research programs on living primates at sites in Africa, Asia, and South America, as well as primate (including human) paleontology in East Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Many courses are taught jointly by faculty members from two different institutions or departments. This teaching collaboration provides students with a variety of viewpoints early in their careers.

The Department of Physical Anthropology develops, interprets, displays, evaluates, and curates the skeletal collections at the San Diego Museum of Man. These specimens are conserved, documented, photographed, and stored in the Physical Anthropology Laboratory. The staff in our Laboratory has an interest in, and commitment to, collection-oriented research in biological anthropology using contemporary techniques. This research is conducted by current staff and interns, as well as outside scholars and students. We also contribute to the varied educational and administrative activities of the institution, including exhibit development, lectures (onsite and offsite), and seminars (Seminars in the Forensic Sciences). We also perform services for the community. For instance, we will perform field excavations and/or visit sites to identify osteological materials. We will examine, identify, and analyze skeletal materials for cultural resource management agencies responsible for the excavation of human remains. This analysis includes an osteological inventory, sex and age estimation, stature estimation, pathology and trauma descriptions, activity and occupational markers, and dental analysis. We will also accept archaeological human remains for safekeeping until reburial is arranged and scheduled by a Native American group. The Hrdlička Paleopathology Collection:

    Academic Positions
There are many academic careers for appropriately trained physical anthropologists. The most common and traditional job openings are found in anthropology departments in colleges and universities. University departments of genetics, zoology, and biology also offer potential employment. So do community colleges and professional schools. Many schools of medicine rely on biological anthropologists to teach the gross anatomy of the human body to medical and paramedical students. Currently, around one in eight American physical anthropologists has some professional affiliation with a medical school, usually in a department of anatomy. A detailed appreciation of the range of jobs held by physical anthropologists can be gained by studying the membership directory of the AAPA, published every December in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.
