Free Electron Lasers
Free Electron Lasers A Free Electron Laser generates tunable, coherent, high power radiation, currently spanning wavelengths from millimeter to visible and potentially ultraviolet to x-ray. It can have the optical properties characteristic of conventional lasers such as high spatial coherence and a near diffraction limited radiation beam. It differs from conventional lasers in using a relativistic electron beam as its lasing medium, as opposed to bound atomic or molecular states, hence the term free-electron. this resource in English is indexed under: Physics Laser Physics and Technology Laser Physics and Technology This encyclopedia explains basic terms and principles of laser physics and technology, with some content added from other topics such as general optics, nonlinear optics, and quantum optics.

About the Course
BHS Mr. Stanbrough "Most people who haven't been trained in physics probably think of what physicists do as a question of incredibly complicated calculations, but that's not really the essence of it. The essence of it is that physics is about concepts, wanting to understand the concepts, the principles by which the world works." - Edward Witten (1951 - )
Physics 1 at BHS - An Overview
I see Physics students for 4 - 4.5 week cycles of 85 minute periods. I try, with limited success, to divide the course as follows: Semester General Topics Text Chapters Mechanics Light I try to stress Scientific Method and how science works (and sometimes doesn't work) in this course. Not many physics students will become professional scientists, let alone physicists, but it is vitally important that, as citizens, they have a reasonably sophisticated idea of how science works. Mechanics is the soul of physics. We begin with kinematics in one- and two-dimensions ( projectiles ), proceed through

    Physics Art Redux
Monday November 1, 2010 In the past, I've discussed some of the crossing points between physics and art (see below for links). Friend-of-the-blog Jennifer Ouellette has a similar discussion over at Discovery News, focusing on a new "Measure for Measure" exhibit in Los Angeles ... an exhibit co-curated by noted string theorist Lisa Randall, who also recently helped write a opera based on string theory. Randall isn't the only string theorist who explores the arts. Brian Greene wrote a children's book, Icarus at the Edge of Time , which was theatrically produced at the 2010 World Science Festival , exploring the curious way that space and time behave at the edge of a black hole. Even the book itself (shown below) is artistic, using images from the Hubble Space Telescope to illustrate the story.
