Digital physics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search In physics and cosmology digital physics is a collection of theoretical perspectives based on the premise that the universe is, at heart, describable by information , and is therefore computable . Therefore, the universe can be conceived as either the output of a computer program or as a vast, digital computation device (or, at least, mathematically isomorphic to such a device). Digital physics is grounded in one or more of the following hypotheses, listed in order of increasing boldness. The universe, or reality , is:

Physics Myths and Physics Facts
Flaws in Concepts and Theories of Modern Physics
About this site: The information on this site is a critical account of some important theoretical concepts in physics where the latter can be shown to be either misleading, inadequate, erroneous or outright logically flawed. Included are also topics where the flaws (or the alternative explanations where given) are not a certainty but only possible or likely within the light of other evidence. It should be obvious from the formulation when this is the case.
Please note that although only a moderate amount of mathematics is explicitly used on these pages, it is assumed throughout that the reader is sufficiently familiar with corresponding principles of mathematical physics at undergraduate- or at least (in some cases) advanced high school level.
All entries are arranged strictly alphabetically (i.e. without regard to specific areas), with links to different keywords in the list as appropriate.

Aberration of Starlight: The small positional changes of distant stars allegedly observed in connection with the earth's orbit around the sun are commonly explained as a consequence of the invariance of the velocity of light via the Lorentz- transformation formulae. However, it is easy to show that the latter should only result in an apparently rotated star rather than a change of its position.

Title: Elastic instability in stratified core annular flow Authors: Oriane Bonhomme Alexander Morozov Jacques Leng Annie Colin Comments: 4 pages, 4 figures Subjects: Fluid Dynamics (physics.flu-dyn) ; Soft Condensed Matter (cond-mat.soft) We study experimentally the interfacial instability between a layer of dilute polymer solution and water flowing in a thin capillary. The use of microfluidic devices allows us to observe and quantify in great detail the features of the flow. At low velocities, the flow takes the form of a straight jet, while at high velocities, steady or advected wavy jets are produced. We demonstrate that the transition between these flow regimes is purely elastic it is caused by viscoelasticity of the polymer solution only. The linear stability analysis of the flow in the short-wave approximation captures quantitatively the flow diagram. Surprisingly, unstable flows are observed for strong velocities, whereas convected flows are observed for low velocities. We demonstrate that this instability can be used to measure rheological properties of dilute polymer solutions that are difficult to assess otherwise.

PY 502, Computational Physics (Fall 2010)
Department of Physics, Boston University
Instructor: Anders Sandvik
Lectures: Tuesday, Thursday 11 - 12:30, in CAS 327
Office hours: Monday 3-4 PM, Wednesday 11 AM - 12 noon, in SCI 316
This course provides an introduction to some of the most widely used methods of computational physics, including numerical integration (elementary algorithms and Monte Carlo techniques), numerical solutions of differential equations (classical equations of motion, time independent and time dependent Schrodinger equations), molecular dynamics simulations (liquids and gases), Monte Carlo simulations (classical models of magnetism), and exact diagonalization of quantum many-body Hamiltonians (models of quantum magnetism). In addition to giving the students a basic working knowledge of these particular techniques, the goal is to make them proficient in scientific computing and programming in general, so that they will be prepared to tackle also other computational problem that they may encounter in the future. The Fortran 90 programming language will be used. The full syllabus is available here

A magnet levitating above a high-temperature superconductor demonstrates the Meissner effect. Physics is the science of matter and its motion , as well as space and time science that deals with concepts such as force energy mass , and charge. Physics is an experimental science ; it is the general analysis of nature , conducted in order to understand how the world around us behaves. Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines, having emerged as a modern science in the 17th century, and through its modern subfield of astronomy , it may be the oldest of all. Those who work professionally in the field are known as physicists. Advances in physics often translate to the technological sector, and sometimes influence the other sciences, as well as mathematics and philosophy. For example, advances in the understanding of electromagnetism have led to the widespread use of electrically driven devices (televisions, computers, home appliances etc.); advances in thermodynamics led to the development of motorized transport; and advances in
