James Nearing
This text is in PDF format, and is my attempt to provide a less expensive alternative to some of the printed books currently available for this course. If you find any mistakes or any parts that are unclear or any topics that you think I should not have omitted, please tell me. I intend this for the undergraduate level, providing a one-semester bridge between some of the introductory math courses and the physics courses in which we expect to use the mathematics. This is the course typically called Mathematical Methods in Physics. The text itself has been expanded so that it now contains far more than a one semester course. The text is available as a single file to download and save, or as the separate chapters. The advantage of the single file is that the internal hyperlinks will take you anywhere in the book, while the internal links in the separate chapters are confined to that chapter. The single file contains a full index (also linked). If you want to read this on the screen there are two formats. The first is for a smaller screen and is formatted so that the page is wider than it is tall. The format for a large monitor is designed with small margins, so that you can more easily use a two-page display.

My complete answer to the late 19th century question "what is electrodynamics trying to tell us?" would simply be this: Fields in empty space have physical reality; the medium that supports them does not.
Having thus removed the mystery from electrodynamics, let me immediately do the same for quantum mechanics: Correlations have physical reality; that which they correlate, does not. N. David Mermin, "What is Quantum Mechanics Trying to Tell Us?" Amazon.com Widgets

Title: History and outlook of statistical physics
Authors: D. Flamm (Submitted on 4 Mar 1998) Abstract: This paper gives a short review of the history of statistical physics starting from D. Bernoulli's kinetic theory of gases in the 18th century until the recent new developments in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the last decades of this century. The most important contributions of the great physicists Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann are sketched. It is shown how the reversibility and the recurrence paradox are resolved within Boltzmann's statistical interpretation of the second law of thermodynamics. An approach to classical and quantum statistical mechanics is outlined. Finally the progress in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the second half of this century is sketched starting from the work of N.N. Bogolyubov in 1946 up to the progress made recently in understanding the diffusion processes in dense fluids using computer simulations and analytical methods. Comments: 12 pages, Latex

MIT physicist Martin Zwierlein has won a 2010 David and Lucille Packard Fellowship — a five-year, unrestricted research grant totaling $875,000. Zwierlein, an assistant professor of physics, is one of 17 recipients of this year’s awards, which are among nation's largest nongovernmental fellowship prizes.
Zwierlein will use the funds to support research that employs ultracold atomic gases, a million times colder than interstellar space, to study strongly interacting systems in a fully controllable environment, and to investigate models of high-temperature superconductivity by confining fermionic superfluids in lower dimensions and in optical lattices, artificial crystals of light. Writing and Reviewing Papers for Medical Physics
At the 2009 AAPM meeting, Journal Manager Penny Slattery and I, with the participation of Deputy Editors David Rogers and Andy Karellas, presented a 1 1/2 hour workshop on Writing and Reviewing Papers for Medical Physics. The power point slides that were used in the workshop are available here . A substantial audience turned out for the workshop, and the discussion that followed the power-point presentation was lively and insightful. The audience response to the workshop was one more indication of the enthusiasm of AAPM members for their journal, and the interest of medical physicists in general in the expansion of Medical Physics into new areas of imaging and oncology, and in the growth of the journal as the leading publication in medical physics worldwide. Fermilab's mission is the goal of high-energy physics: to learn what the universe is made of and how it works. Fermilab builds and operates the facilities that high-energy physicists need to do forefront research, and develops new accelerator technology for the experiments of the future. Fermilab is the largest U.S. laboratory for research in high-energy physics and is second only to CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, in the world. About 2,500 scientific users, scientists from universities and laboratories throughout the U.S. and around the world, use Fermilab for their research. The primary instruments for high-energy physics are accelerators, especially colliders, in which counter-rotating beams of particles are brought into collision. The highest-energy collider in the U.S. is the Fermilab Tevatron. Because of the nature of their experiments, high-energy physicists must do their research in collaboration with large laboratories like Fermilab. Since it is an essential part of the academic research enterprise, Fermilab is operated by Universities Research Association, a consortium of 90 research universities.

    Physics
By Aristotle Written 350 B.C.E Translated by R. P. Hardie and R. K. Gaye Table of Contents Book II Part 1 Of things that exist, some exist by nature, some from other causes. 'By nature' the animals and their parts exist, and the plants and the simple bodies (earth, fire, air, water)-for we say that these and the like exist 'by nature'. All the things mentioned present a feature in which they differ from things which are not constituted by nature. Each of them has within itself a principle of motion and of stationariness (in respect of place, or of growth and decrease, or by way of alteration). On the other hand, a bed and a coat and anything else of that sort, qua receiving these designations i.e. in so far as they are products of art-have no innate impulse to change. But in so far as they happen to be composed of stone or of earth or of a mixture of the two, they do have such an impulse, and just to that extent
