Welcome The Program in Molecular Plant Biology (PMPB) is designated as a Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence (PRSE) by Colorado State University. The PMPB is an interdepartmental program formed with the goal to train and produce the next generation of world-class plant biologists. These are exciting times to study plant biology. With the complete genome sequencing of several photosynthetic organisms and many more on the way to completion, a new era of plant biology has started with tremendous opportunities to study many unique aspects of plant biology and for innovative use of this knowledge for applied purposes. To avail these opportunities we need a new breed of plant biologists capable of working in a highly interdisciplinary environment. The PMPB is designed for highly motivated students seeking a Ph.D in Molecular Plant Biology. 26768 visitors Equal Opportunity Search CSU PMPB Colorado State University Updated: October 11, 2010 - Webmaster

This species originated in East Africa, where solid thickets of castor grow. Cultivation of castor in Russia was first recorded in 1840. In former Soviet times, crops occupied 132 thousand hectares. The crop is cultivated in the southern Ukraine (Zaporozhye, Kherson, and Dnepropetrovsk areas), in the Krasnodar and Stavropol territories, in the Rostov area, and in the Northern Caucasus. The crop is also grown on a smaller scale in the republics of Central Asia and in the Lower Volga region. Popular varieties include: VNIIMK 165, Hybrid ranny, Donskaja 39/44, Kruglik 5, Stepnaja 6, Krasnodarsky 3, Kubanskaja 15, and Chervonnaja.

Life on earth, as we know it, would be impossible without plants. Plants supply humans with oxygen, food, fiber, fuel, minerals and medicines. Plant biology is the study of how plants grow, develop, respond to environmental signals, defend against pathogens, reproduce, and evolve. Research in plant biology provides critical advances in nutrition, medicine, improvements to the environment, and renewable energy alternatives.

Welcome! This site provides information about plant cell and molecular biology at Biological Sciences Department, Stanford University and the Department of Plant Biology, Carnegie Institution . Our focus is cellular, developmental, and molecular biology of plants. Our work employs bioinformatic, genetic, physiological, and biochemical methods to solve significant problems in basic plant biology. The challenge of posing the right questions and seeking comprehensive solutions is a partnership among students, postdoctoral scholars, staff, and the faculty. Innovation and bold experiments exploring the unknown are hallmarks of this plant biology program. We have close ties to the Department of Global Ecology, Carnegie Institution and evolutionary biology group in the Biological Sciences Department at Stanford University that work with plants, and students, postdoctoral fellows, and visitors have the opportunity to participate in both molecular and ecological seminars and courses. Plant biologists have an illustrious history here, as illustrated by two examples from the past.
  • Nobel Prize winner George Beadle, a corn geneticist at Stanford, started a side project with colleague Ed Tatum to define what genes do in Neurospora using defined media. Their work, establishing "one gene, one enzyme," is the foundation of biochemical genetics.

The plant group at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory studies fundamental mechanisms in plant development and genetics that impact crop productivity, biodiversity and climate change. Their research uses Arabidopsis , maize and most recently tomato as model systems and expands upon the Nobel prize-winning work done here by Barbara McClintock in the 1940s and 50s. The transposable genetic elements, or "jumping genes," that she discovered are now understood to reprogram the epigenome and are being used at CSHL for functional genomics in Arabidopsis and maize CSHL has taken part in numerous plant genome sequencing projects including Arabidopsis , rice, sorghum and maize, as well as epigenomic sequencing and profiling. We are part of the iPlant Cyberinfrastructure consortium and the Long Island Biofuels Alliance. The Laboratory owns 12 acres of farmland nearby called Uplands Farm. Here, an expert staff raises maize, tomato and Arabidopsis plants for study.
