65. :: NASA Quest > Archives ::
Offers teachers and students a chance to examine a number of basic principles and concepts in plant biology and crop production through hands on experiments using a simulated Biomass Production System.

Farming in Space You may download version here that is print-ready
A reader for the Acrobat file is available online Introduction This activity originates from NASA's interest in long-term, manned flight and potential colonization of the moon and planets. Plants can be an important part of bioregenerative life support systems in which food is produced and human waste recycled. To this end NASA is supporting the development of experimental equipment designed to grow plants on the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. At the same time that engineers are designing equipment for plant growth, plant scientists are evaluating various species for their potential, and plant breeders are creating plant varieties that may be suitable in life support systems. An example of one of these systems in which Fast Plants and dwarf wheat will be evaluated experimentally on the space shuttle in the coming years is the Biomass Production System (BPS) designed by Orbitec (Madison, WI). The BPS is a complex piece of equipment with the capability of growing plants in four small chambers in which temperature, light, plant nutrient delivery, Carbon dioxide concentration and relative humidity can be monitored and controlled. Scientists Gary Stutte (Dynamac) and Robert Morrow (Orbitec) lead a team of other scientists and engineers in an experiment in which the Super Dwarf wheat developed by researcher Bruce Bugbee of Utah State University will be grown and evaluated in the BPS together with dwarf Fast Plants, AstroPlants.

What is plant biology?
Plant biology is the study of:
  • Plant populations Plant organisms Cellular components of plants, and Their molecular mechanisms
  • Plant biology can also include the investigation of:
  • Plants as they relate to food products (vegetables) Fiber products (cotton clothing) Ornamental purposes (landscaping)
  • There are several main plant biology categories that children and teens are expected to know about as they progress through school and they are as follows: Lower Grades:
  • Plant, flower, and tree life cycles Parts of a plant How plants make energy
  • In the upper grades this translates to:
  • Plant, flower, and tree reproduction Plant anatomy Molecular and metabolic processes
  • Careers in Plant biology:
Who makes a good plant biologist?
  • Loves discovering new things Enjoys learning about plants and how they relate to the environment Has good attention to detail Good communication skills Likes to problem solve Can work as part of a team

  • What specific careers are available to plant biologists?

Welcome to the Scientific Inquiry through Plants ( Sip ) project
Sip is being developed as a scientific learning/research resource, bringing together students, plant scientists, and teachers from across the nation. Students engage in hands-on research (inquiry) projects, working with peers and scientist mentors to build collaborative relationships and improve their understanding of science. We have just completed our final "proof of concept" pilot. Over the summer we will update the site based on what we have learned, and from information provided by those who have participated in the project.
In the fall we will bring a new look and name to the site: PlantingScience.
Here on our home page you will find links taking you to information about the project and to those used to navigate the site. To learn more about this free online learning community, please explore our site and the wonders of doing real science. Enjoy! All student research projects will be found in the Research Gallery. PLANT BIOLOGY The Plant Biology concentration provides undergraduates with training in those areas of science that are essential to an understanding of modern plant sciences. Like the biology concentration, this concentration deals with all of the major levels of biological organization (molecular, cellular, organismal, ecological, and evolutionary), but differs from the Biology concentration by its greater emphasis on the biology of plants. This program is well suited for those who wish to study biology as part of a liberal education, or to prepare for a teaching career in secondary schools. It also provides excellent preparation for graduate study in basic and applied areas of the plant sciences and related fields, such as ecology, genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry. Prerequisites to Concentration. BIOLOGY 162; CHEM 210/211, 215/216; MATH 115 and 116; PHYSICS 125/127 and 126/128, or PHYSICS 140/141 and 240/241. Concentration Program. A minimum of 33 credits, including: 1. Biochemistry (BIOLOGY 310, 311, BIOLCHEM 415, or CHEM 451 and 452). 2. Genetics (BIOLOGY 305).
