In an attempt to understand plant function we investigate physiological processes at multiple levels (organelle, cell, tissue, organ and whole plant). The plant physiology cluster at the Waite uses an integrated approach combining a range of novel and established biochemical, electrophysiological, genetic, molecular and physiological assays to explore specific questions. Major research themes include the mechanisms and regulation of ion transport, cell signalling, physiological plant pathology and post-harvest physiology. In particular these themes encompass an interest in nutrient acquisition from the soil, cell specific ion accumulation, the impact of ion changes, redox status and reactive oxygen species (ROS) on plant disease and the mechanisms of ethylene perception in post-harvest fruit and vegetables.

Plant Physiology
The physiology of plants has been of great interest and importance to humans for thousands of years. When ancient humans discovered that they could cultivate certain plants, such as rich, wheat, and corn, they began to protect and care for their crops. Of particular importance to humans was the ability to encourage plants to grow faster, stay healthier, and produce more fruit and seeds. To accomplish this, humans began to learn about plant physiology. Fertilizer, usually animal manure, was added to the soil to provide nutrients, particularly nitrates and phosphates, for the plants. Because water was necessary for crops, farms were typically built near sources of rivers and lakes. Later, irrigation ditches were built to help disperse the water throughout the fields.

The Interdepartmental Plant Biology (IPB), previously Interdepartmental Plant Physiology Major (IPPM), educates scientists in basic plant biology, including but not limiting to plant molecular biology, plant cell biology, plant physiology, and plant organismal biology and provides training in the most state of the art methods and technologies. Graduate study in IPB, leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees, is offered through eight participating departments: Agronomy Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) Chemistry Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology (EEOB) ... Horticulture , and Plant Pathology Research conducted by the faculty and students of the major represents basic plant biology. The experimental approaches represented in the major span the range of complexity from molecular studies, to cellular, organismal and the ecological level (crop monocultures and natural populations). Although IPB graduate students are themselves involved in basic plant biology research, the research focus of the faculty in the major includes both basic and applied approaches. This mix of basic and practical research orientations helps foster a stimulating environment for graduate training.
