Plants in Action
Plants in Action From September 2010, the first edition of Plants in Action is republished as an electronic text book. It is open access and downloads are free. Plants in Action Website The next stage will be the complete revision of the book, with an expected completion date of September 2011. It will be a fully edited and peer-reviewed wiki. Comments and volunteer contributions are welcome. These can be made by contacting the editorial team listed on the home page of Plants in Action2 Plants in Action is written by plant scientists from Australian and New Zealand as a plant biology book for senior undergraduates and a resource for postgraduates and young research scientists. Open access web resources are transforming education, and Plants in Action is the first plant science textbook contributing to this unrestricted sharing of scientific knowledge. This first stage of the Plants in Action web project is made possible by generous sponsorship of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the University of Queensland. The next stage will be the complete revision of the book, with an expected completion date of September 2011. It will be a fully edited and peer-reviewed wiki, with a discussion and comments page for each chapter. The overall structure of first edition

TEACHING: ENVIRONMENTAL PLANT PHYSIOLOGY LECTURE BACK TO TEACHING ENVIRONMENTAL PLANT PHYSIOLOGY LECTURE Environmental Plant Physiology provides a link between the cellular and biochemical analysis in plant physiology and more applied aspects of plant growth. Environmental Plant Physiologists examine the ways that physiological processes are integrated to cause whole plant responses in communities. The subject matter is related to Plant Ecology and Stress Physiology. The basic concepts and approaches are applicable to all types of plants, from petunias to potatoes to plums; grown in pots or in soil, in greenhouses or in the field.
Emphasis will be placed on the relationship between environmental parameters (radiation, temperature, water, nutrients), and their effect on physiological processes (photosynthesis, respiration), and plant responses (leaf expansion, partitioning of dry mass, water status, and transpiration). We will examine the integration of these plant responses into models that help to better understand and predict growth and yield. The "Journal of Plant Physiology" publishes original papers, reviews and short communications dealing with all aspects of plant biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology and basic aspects of plant biotechnology. All papers are published in English. The main focus of the journal is to disseminate original and high quality information governing basic processes in plant physiology and development. The journal also invites the submission of papers which bridge basic research in functional plant sciences with applied aspects of plant biotechnology. Papers will be accepted only after peer review. They will be expected to adhere to high scientific quality standards. Manuscripts will usually be published in order of submission. To promote rapid publication of urgent and outstanding papers, the editors may occasionally give preference to such manuscripts.

Orientation to Biology (Fyr 174)
This is a freshman-year course for biology majors; it is part of a two-course cluster, with Bio 120 (below). In this course freshmen learn about the university, the Willimantic community, and our biology program. We hope that the seminars and activities help develop a learning community among our freshman majors to enhance their performance as developing biologists. Fall 2010 Syllabus and Schedule of Topics

Plants and Human Affairs (Bio 207)
My course for non-biology majors deals with the practical, economic, and horticultural side of botany. This course in basic science fulfills the Liberal Arts Curriculum Tier 2 Science with Lab requirement and is a keystone course for the horticulture certificate program. It has had a long history as a "most popular" course going back 20 years. As the Biology Department spent the 2007/2008 academic year packing in preparation for consolidation into the new Science Building, and the 2008/2009 academic year finishing and populating our new greenhouse facilities, this course has not been offered since 2007. However, this course is being offered again in Spring 2010 in our new building and greenhouses. I provide links here to the resources for many forms of this course taught in regular, summer, and winter intersession formats of various durations.
