LAB 8: PLANT PHYSIOLOGY Water is vital to all organisms, but is of special importance to plants. Plant cells take in water to keep leaves and other ti ss ues turgid, to carry out photosynthesis (to produce energy and food), and to take in nutrients, which enter roots, di ss olved in water, and travel up the vascular ti ss ue to the leaves. Stomata in leaves depend on the water content of guard cells to control the pa ss age of O and CO gases. Phloem cells require water in to carry carbohydrates (from photosynthesis) from leaves to stems and roots, in a proce ss called bulk flow . In this laboratory se ss ion you will study several aspects of water transport through vascular plants. Be sure to familiarize yourself again with the terms and concepts of water potential pre ss ure potential , and osmosis QUESTIONS/OBJECTIVES OF LABORATORY: Where are stomata located? How does their function relate to and depend on water? How are plant vascular tissues constructed? How do they function? What are guttation and transpiration? How do they occur, and what intrinsic and environmental factors affect transpiration rate?

A Sketch of an 8 Part
Plant Hormone Theory
"Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions." Proverbs 18:2 NLT
"Whatever exists has already been named..." Ecclesiastes 6:10 NIV
Summary
Informally since 1986 and on the Web since 1996, I have written several fairly different versions of comprehensive speculations on the functions and behavior of plant hormones. This page describes the commonly accepted plant hormones as each having major roles as indicators of plant nutrient deficiency or abundance. I see four classes of nutrients: the gases, minerals, water and sugar. There are then two hormone groups assigned to each nutrient class, one is an indicator of abundance and one of scarcity. Building on this structure, I postulate that all four of the abundance hormones are needed for cell division, not just the commonly accepted Auxin and Cytokinin. Furthermore, I postulate that all four of the deficiency hormones are needed for cell senescence to be carried out.
Introduction
In early 2008 I was reading the Wikipedia articles on Jasmonates, and the article made me question the role I had made for Auxin as the indicator of excess sugar. This was because by Jasmonic Acid is involved in tuber formation and de-chlorophylling leaves actions we might expect from Auxin. Presumably both these events occur because of an excess of sugar. So if this is true, my new eight hormone scheme from 2007 needed rearranging.
