From the Director ITER Project. We at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) are particularly pleased that the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) had a banner year with 21 weeks of experimental operations; the National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) passed both Department of Energy (DOE) Critical Decision 2 and Critical Decision 3 allowing the start of construction; and PPPL, partnering with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), was selected through a broad competition to host the U.S. ITER Project Office. The FY04 campaign on NSTX was very successful, leading to deeper understanding of fusion plasmas, scientific information of importance for ITER, and development of long-pulse high-beta operating scenarios for a future Spherical Torus Component (ST) Test Facility and ultimately a power plant. Advances were made in the understanding of resistive wall modes, plasma kinks which grow up on the resistive diffusion time of the conducting walls, including for the first time detection of toroidal mode number n=3 components of the perturbed fields. New resistive wall mode control coils were exercised for the first time and shown to have a favorable effect on locked modes. Confinement trends in ST's were elucidated, and transport barriers were observed in plasmas calculated to have reversed shear. New insight was gained into the nonlinear behavior of fast particle modes, and a new class of edge localized modes was discovered, which has minimal impact on the divertor.

History of the PPPL Lyman Spitzer, Jr., Founder and Director of Project Matterhorn, Melvin B. Gottlieb was director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory from 1961 to 1980 Harold P. Furth was director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory from 1981 to 1990 Ronald C. Davidson was director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory from 1991 to 1996 Magnetic fusion research at Princeton began in 1951 under the code name Project Matterhorn. Lyman Spitzer, Jr., Professor of Astronomy at Princeton University, had for many years been involved in the study of very hot rarefied gases in interstellar space. Inspired by the fascinating but highly exaggerated claims of fusion researchers in Argentine, Professor Spitzer conceived of a plasma being confined in a figure-eight-shaped tube by an externally generated magnetic field. He called this concept the "stellarator," and took this design before the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington. As a result of this meeting and a review of the invention by designated scientists throughout the nation, the stellarator proposal was funded and Princeton University's controlled fusion effort was born. In 1958, magnetic fusion research was declassified allowing all nations to share their results openly. For the past three decades, PPPL has been a leader in magnetic confinement experiments utilizing the tokamak approach. This work culminated in the world-record performance of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR), which operated at PPPL from 1982 to 1997. Beginning in 1993, TFTR was the first in the world to use 50/50 mixtures of deuterium-tritium, yielding an unprecedented 10.7 million watts of fusion power.
