From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For the Randy Newman song of the same name, see Political Science (song) Political science is a social science, concerned with the theory and practice of politics and the description and analysis of political systems and political behavior. Political scientists "see themselves engaged in revealing the relationships underlying political events and conditions. And from these revelations they attempt to construct general principles about the way the world of politics work." Political science intersects with other fields; including public policy , national politics, economics international relations comparative politics psychology ... law , and political theory Today political science is commonly divided into three distinct sub-disciplines which constitute the field; Political Philosophy Comparative Politics and International Relations . Each of those three fields covers another part of political actions and interactions: International Relations deals with the interaction between nationstates as well as intergovernmental and transnational organizations. Comparative Politics is the science of comparison and teaching of different types of constitutions, political actors, legislature and associated fields, all of them from an intrastate perspective. Political Theory is the reasoning for an absolute normative government, laws and similar questions and their distinctive characteristics.

WELCOME TO POLITICAL SCIENCE
Political Science @ Baylor University Baylor's Political Science Department is renowned for its high quality teaching and for professors who care about students . Our majors have gone on to become lawyers, journalists, politicians, lobbyists, diplomats, political analysts and teachers. We place students in top law schools around the country such as Georgetown and Harvard, and in top graduate programs such as Yale and Princeton. And our new PhD program is already among the most highly-rated at Baylor University. We offer a well-rounded education in all the major subfields in political science, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including political theory, American political institutions, public law, public policy and administration, comparative politics, and international relations. In addition, we offer numerous opportunities for research, travel to conferences, and political and legal internships, and we do all this in the context of the small-school, Christian environment for which Baylor has become famous. Undergraduate Program The department offers undergraduate majors in both political science and international studies. And we have just introduced a new pre-law track for undergraduate majors interested in preparing for careers in law. We also offer courses that prepare students for competition in Moot Court, Model United Nations, and Model Organization of American States.

Department Overview
101 Gowen Political science, broadly conceived, is the study of governments and other political actors, including their origins and foundations, interactions with groups and individuals, and interactions with nations. Within this larger framework political scientists study power, authority, conflict, economic relationships, culture, laws, policy, values, ethics, justice, equality, rights, legitimacy, and representation, to list only a few. Using these and other concepts, they analyze the political impacts of social issues such as war, peace, poverty, crime, education, the environment, race, gender, and globalization. Modes of inquiry are highly interdisciplinary.

Writing in Political Science
What this handout is about
This handout will help you to recognize and to follow writing standards in political science. The first step toward accomplishing this goal is to develop a basic understanding of political science and the kind of work political scientists do.
Defining politics and political science
  • American politics examines political behavior and institutions in the United States. Comparative politics analyzes and compares political systems within and across different geographic regions. International relations investigates relations among nation states and the activities of international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Bank, and NATO, as well as international actors such as terrorists, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and multi-national corporations (MNCs). Political theory analyzes fundamental political concepts such as power and democracy and foundational questions, like "How should the individual and the state relate?"

Hello and Welcome to Political Science!
Political science has been a part of the University of Nebraska since 1871 when the first Chancellor of the University, a scholar of law and ethics Alan Benton, held the Chair of Moral Science. During the remainder of the 19th century, a number of professors of economic and political science, as well as political history and civics offered courses in government, politics and the law. By 1899, a Department of Political Economy and Sociology was formed, and reconstituted as a Department of Political Science and Sociology in 1906. Political science was established as an independent department in 1925.
Graduate study in Political Science at Nebraska offers students an opportunity to work directly with nationally and internationally known scholar-teachers in American politics, international relations, comparative politics, and public policy, as well as a number of interdisciplinary programs such as Human Rights and Human Diversity. Students receive the highest quality training for a career in government, teaching, the non-profit sector, or business. Graduate students typically have a close working relationships with faculty and often work collaboratively on joint projects which lead to scholarly publications.

The Political Science Experience At Truman
Focusing on a high quality undergraduate education in a small classroom setting. The Truman Political Science Experience must be understood in the context of our department’s mission: to create graduates who are nationally competitive for positions in graduate programs, law schools, government, and other professional positions. We seek to instill in our students a sense of personal excellence and the habits of confident, life-long learners. For our first-year majors, the Truman Political Science Experience begins with a challenging introductory course that helps students transition to college and introduces them to a culture of small classes where professors know their names and support their learning in and out of the classroom. The major follows a curriculum that intentionally develops knowledge, research abilities, communication talents, and higher order thinking skills. Our students take courses exposing them to the breadth of the significant subfields in the discipline, and they also have the option to choose electives to delve deeper into their preferred areas of study. Truman State students engage in undergraduate research in classes and beyond, working under the mentorship of one of the discipline’s outstanding faculty members. In addition, many students present their research at regional or national conferences or at Truman’s annual undergraduate research conference.
