In fact, the water in the earth's biosphere is used and reused again and again. This is called water cycle or continuous movement of water between the earth and the atmosphere. It involves the following mechanisms:
  • Evaporation: changing of water from liquid to gas

Air Pollution/Water Polution
Are "zero emissions" goals and green design realistic for solving air and water pollution?
THE FOUR BASIC ELEMENTS?
We've come to accept the assertion that some level of air pollution and water pollution is OK; or, if not OK, that it's necessary to allow a modern lifestyle. But is this true? What if we told automotive engineers: "Design a car so that it's acceptable to take the tailpipe and put the exhaust directly back into the passenger compartment." We car owners would insist that such an approach to pollution control would produce air that is pure. What if we told industrial-plant designers: "Make the effluent from your factory clean enough so that your CEO can use it as a drinking-water supply." Now THAT would be clean! The good news is, these seemingly unachievable pollution-control goals are indeed possible to reach. Air and Water Pollution
ZERO EMISSION VEHICLES AND AIR POLLUTION
So, back to the idea of designing a car so that it's OK to take the tailpipe and put the exhaust directly back into the passenger compartment. That would be a very obvious way for a car owner to assess whether the exhaust from his or her car was "clean enough," and a consumer would not buy a car that allowed carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, and other pollutants into their immediate breathing space.

Water tanks make urban comeback

BROADCAST: 02/05/2004
As the price of water goes up and droughts seem increasingly persistant, the push in rural areas to conserve water gets ever stronger. That push has seen pipes replace leaky open channels, drip irrigation take over from flood irrigation, the capping of artesian bores, the use of treated sewage on tree lots and grape vines, and even the covering of dams with evaporation halting tarps. Now it's the turn of urban Australians to do their bit, and one of the first water saving weapons to be advocated in Australia's big cities is that rural icon - the rainwater tank. [ FULL STORY

Introduction
Why so polluted?
Effects of water pollution Dilution is NOT the solution! Lake Erie: "We have met the enemy and he is us" ... Further resources and references The pollution of our waterways became a national issue in June of 1969, the day that the Cuyahoga River, flowing through Cleveland, Ohio, on its way to Lake Erie, caught on fire because it was so polluted. Although this was not the first time that the Cuyahoga River had been in flames, the 1969 fire caught the attention of the nation and the fight began for increased water pollution controls, which eventually led to the Great Lakes Water Quality Act and Clean Water Act in the 1970s. Water pollution is defined as a change in the chemical, physical and biological health of a waterway due to human activity. Ways that humans have affected the quality of the Great Lakes water over the centuries include sewage disposal, toxic contamination through heavy metals and pesticides, overdevelopment of the water's edge, runoff from agriculture and urbanization, and air pollution.

Air Pollution, Water Shortage Soil Erosion — A Different Farm Subsidy Approach . by Malcolm Beck

click to return to site map Article Index A Different Farm Subsidy Approach by Malcolm Beck Before our modern agriculture—with over soil tillage, non-organic, high analysis fertilizers and improper animal grazing—became widely used on our farm and ranch lands, the soil in this country had an organic content between four and eight percent. Now the soil across the US contains one half or less of the organic matter it once had. Although modern agricultural practices are designed to improve farming, the results show different. The big mold board and disc plows turned the top soil over and exposed the millions of soil life species to the sun's rays which kill them. They then decay and the carbon they contained is oxidized into the air as CO2. Using high analysis fertilizers doesn't help either. Plants can't absorb chemical fertilizer until microbes have processed it into an ion form. The energy microbes require to do the processing is taken from the decaying, carbon rich, plant and animal matter in the soil. As the soil life processes the fertilizers, the energy used is released to the atmosphere as CO2. The higher the analysis, and/or more fertilizer used, the more CO2 is released. As a result, the soil organic content is lost from the soil to the atmosphere as pollution. Is there an answer?
