Demography and Population Studies
Demography is the scientific study of the characteristics of human populations. It is also sometimes called population studies. Demography is considered to be a branch within the field of sociology. It relies heavily on statistical data, collecting, interpreting, and presenting the information to determine trends. Most of the data comes from censuses around the world. Other survey and statistical records are also used to a lesser degree. Demographers primarily handle information about basic life events like birth and death rates, migration, employment, divorce, contraceptive use, hunger, economics, access to running water, education, life expectancy, and so on. These statistics are used in a few different ways. They often try to predict what will happen in the future, which may help to avoid or plan for potential problems. Demographers may study why things happen and what the consequences are, including the effects of population trends on the environment. Population studies help determine how governments allocate their funds and where aid resources go. The fields of advertising and economics also use demography statistics to a large extent. Because most of the information used in population studies come from surveys, it's important for people to respond to them and give accurate answers. This is especially true regarding government census surveys. The analyzed results are often used to advocate for disadvantaged groups of people by researchers and independent organizations as well as government agencies. They can help determine policies and decide which town gets a new health clinic or job creation resources.

Welcome to SUDA,
the Stockholm University Demography Unit*
SUDA is part of the Department of Sociology, offering training in demography through individual courses, multi-disciplinary one- and two-year masters degrees, and a doctoral degree in sociological demography. These programs are the only comprehensive demographic training in Sweden and are well connected with research schools throughout the world. Our research concentrates on family dynamics childbearing, partnerships, households and the cultural, social, economic, and political conditions that underlie them. Most of the work we do is comparative, engaging data from countries throughout Europe and the rest of the world. We are particularly interested in the effects of social policy, gender relationships and attitudes or values on demographic behavior.

The population Research Unit is a section of the Department of Sociology at the University of Helsinki in Finland. (The Department of Sociology belongs to the Faculty of Social Sciences .) The head of the Unit is professor Pekka Martikainen. The research of the Unit deals mainly with mortality and health, marriage and family, fertility and social exclusion in urban areas. Most of the research is based on large individual-level data sets compiled in cooperation with Statistics Finland by linking records from the national population register to records from various other registers. The Implications of Demographic Change For Russian Politics and Security
Harley Balzer

Both in Russia and abroad, much of the focus has been on the extent of the crisis and the potential size of Russia’s population in 2050. In a country where every month seems to bring a new “decisive political struggle,” timelines stretching over half a century are not likely to generate effective policy responses. By emphasizing the more
immediate social and political implications of these important issues, it may be possible to derive both a framework for understanding developments in Russian politics and some practical policy recommendations.
When we begin to discuss the implications of Russia’s population crisis, the temptation is almost always to provide a laundry list of serious problems. I have succumbed to this practice myself (Balzer 2002; 2003). But, like the half-century timelines, extensive lists tend to overwhelm audiences and policy-makers. Rather than stimulating action, they can produce a feeling of being overwhelmed and a belief that if things are that bad, there must be some mechanism of self-correction that enables human societies to survive. Since it is not possible to do everything, why not do nothing? There is an urgent need for focus and priorities.                      continue reading Demographic/Health Problems in the Russian Federation: Trends, Dimensions, Implications

Global Population Data Sets
Asia Population Database Documentation
This project (which has been carried out as a cooperative activity between NCGIA, CGIAR and UNEP/GRID between Oct. 1995 and present) has pooled available data sets, many of which had been assembled for the global demography project. All data were checked, international boundaries and coastlines were replaced with a standard template, the attribute database was redesigned, and new, more reliable population estimates for subnational units were produced for all countries. From the resulting data sets, raster surfaces representing population distribution and population density were created in collaboration between NCGIA and GRID-Geneva.

The development of this database was supported by the United Nations Environment Programme / Global Resource Information Database (UNEP/GRID) Sioux Falls, and the World Resources Institute (WRI) , Washington D.C. Keywords: BEBR began making population estimates for Florida and its counties in the 1950s. The Population Program was formally established in 1972 when BEBR received the first of a continuous series of annual contracts from the State of Florida to produce the state's official city and county population estimates. The Population Program continues to produce Florida’s official city, county, and state population estimates each year. These estimates are used for state revenue-sharing and many other planning, budgeting, and analytical purposes. The program also produces estimates of households and average household size and projections by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin for the state and each county. Members of the Population Program work on a variety of demographic research projects and publish the results in books, monographs, scholarly journals, and technical reports. They also make presentations on Florida's demographic trends to business, government, and civic groups throughout the state and respond to many telephone requests for demographic data and analysis. BEBR is Florida's representative to the Federal-State Cooperative Programs for Population Estimates and Projections, and works closely with the U.S. Census Bureau to improve the quality of demographic data in Florida. Over the years, staff members have served on the Federal-State Cooperative Programs for Population Estimates and Projections, the U.S. Census Bureau Advisory Committee, the National Research Council's Panel to Evaluate Alternative Census Methodologies, the Board of Directors of the Southern Demographic Association, and the Population Association of America's Committee on Applied Demography.

      British Society for Population Studies
The British Society for Population Studies (BSPS) is a non-profitable society of persons with a scientific interest in the study of human populations. BSPS was founded in 1973, but originated in the 1960s. Its main objectives are to further the scientific study of biological, economic, historical, medical, social and other disciplines connected with human populations and to contribute to the public awareness of them. BSPS provides a forum for discussion of these issues and is a vehicle for the interchange of ideas. It provides facilities for study and research and for the exchange and dissemination of information. In order to fulfil its objectives, BSPS organises various events: half-day and day meetings, occasional workshops and an annual conference. BSPS produces a newsletter at least four times a year, and an occasional register of members' interests.
