Population studies
Living means consuming, and consuming causes resource depletion and environmental degradation, but also creation of jobs and income. The consumption habits of people across Australia and the world differ substantially, and so do the associated social, environmental and economic impacts. At the University of Sydney we have carried out a number of population studies on environmental effects, such as
  • the carbon footprint of the UK population , commissioned by Defra UK,
  • the Australian Environmental Atlas (co-developed with the Australian Conservation Foundation),
  • a comparative study of the energy requirements of the pipulations of Australia, Brazil, Denmark, India, and Japan,
  • the ecological footprint of Canberra in 1999 (funded by the Australian Capital Territory's Chief Minister's Department),
  • the ecological footprint of Victoria in 1999 (funded by the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment),
  • the ecological footprint of Melbourne in 1999 (funded by the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority)

Tasmania's Population - Dynamic data and Demographic Profiles
The site is maintained by Professor Natalie Jackson (Director of the Population Studies Centre , University of Waikato, Hamilton New Zealand) previously of the Demographic Analytical Services Unit, School of Sociology and Social Work, University of Tasmania. Population change is one of Tasmania's hottest issues. There is seldom a week in which population is not the topic of pronouncements by politicians, in media items or letters to the editors of local papers. This is less so the case in Australia's other States and Territories; so why is Tasmania different in this respect? This web site has been established as a forum for Tasmanians to read and learn more about the population dynamics in their state. Feel free to e-mail with small enquiries. NEW Resources!!! See the Resource page for five new user-friendly interactive Excel resources. These population ageing graphs based on ABS data allow you to change the LGA, State or Year at the click of a mouse. The European Society for Population Economics was founded in 1986 and was created in order to facilitate communication and exchange between researchers in different European countries, as well as with scientists from other parts of the world. Equal emphasis is given to theoretical and applied research focusing on the role played by human capital and demographic variables in economics. Examples of research topics in population economics are: human capital and labour economics, gender issues, aging and social security, population and economic growth, domestic and international migration, income distribution and redistribution within and between generations, changing age structure and public housing, intrahousehold distribution and intergenerational transfers, population growth and technical progress, or population and the environment. The list is merely illustrative of the scope of ESPE and is by no means exhaustive. These are the most important advantages of your ESPE membership:

African Population Studies Research Program
November 01, 2010
The African Population Studies Research and Training Program (APS) at the University of Colorado at Boulder is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett foundation. The goals of the APS Program are to build in collaboration with African institutions:
  • an international pool of talented social science researchers in the U.S. and sub-Saharan Africa with the skills needed to address population issues; advanced international-level graduate training capacity in select African institutions that can serve the needs of the region on a sustained basis; strong collaborative research linkages with select African institutions that involve senior and junior researchers and students, with research focused on the crucial areas of health (emphasizing reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and adult health), migration, population and environment, and their interrelationships.
The activities of the APS include a postdoctoral fellow program, an intensive training program, a small grant program and a yearly colloquium with our partner institutions: Brown University, The University of the Witwatersrand, and the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC).

Investigators also serve as experts to governmental, non-governmental, and international agencies such as the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Scientists hold appointments with University of Toronto departments, including the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Psychology, Psychiatry, Sociology, and Pharmacology. One objective of this research section is to describe the extent of addiction and mental health indicators in the general population and monitor trends over time. This includes: providing and disseminating accurate and timely data regarding alcohol use, other drug use and mental health indicators among the general population and special sub-populations; and monitoring and identifying risk and protective factors for alcohol, other drug use and mental health indicators.
