Baboons
Baboons The Baboon, Papio cyanocephalus , is a large terrestrial monkey with a somewhat dog-like head. There are 2 subspecies found in Kenya; the Yellow Baboon found in Eastern Kenya and the Olive Baboon found throughout the rest of the country. The 2 species can be told apart by build, the Yellow Baboon is slimmer and longer limbed, and by the presence of a mane (present in the Olive Baboon but absent in the Yellow). Monkeys
Black and White Colobus The Black and White Colobus Colobus guereza also known as the Guereza is a very distinctive and beautiful monkey with its jet black coat and flowing white mantle. They live mostly high in the forest canopy and are difficult to get a close look at. We have mostly seen them only in fleeting glimpses as they moved through the tops of trees. However Mountain Lodge on Mount Kenya can be a good spot to get a closer look as the local troop occasionally comes through the lodge grounds at sunset, on route to their sleeping areas. The roof top look out area is excellent for a tree-top view of the troop. They are, however, shy and wary of humans. Vervet The Vervet

Welcome to the
International Primate Protection League
We are a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the world's remaining primates, great and small. We concentrate on:
  • offering advisory and financial support for activities that help monkeys and apes, both in the U.S. and overseas; granting financial assistance for programs that protect primates and their habitat within their native countries; publicizing the plight of primates in trouble and organizing international protest campaigns; conducting investigations of illegal international primate trafficking; and operating a sanctuary for rescued gibbon apes in South Carolina.
IPPL is a registered 501(c)(3) U.S. charity that cares about making the best use of our friends' donations to benefit primates worldwide.

Most dwell in tropical forests. The smallest living primate is the pygmy marmoset, which weighs around 70 g; the largest is the gorilla, weighing up to around 175 kg. Primates radiated in arboreal habitats, and many of the characteristics by which we recognize them today (shortened rostrum and forwardly directed orbits, associated with stereoscopic vision; opposable hallux and pollex ; unfused and highly mobile radius and ulna in the forelimb and tibia and fibula in the hind) probably arose as adaptations for life in the trees or are primitive traits that were retained for the same reason. Several species, including our own, have left the trees for life on the ground; nevertheless, we retain many of these features. Primates are usually recognized based on a suite of primitive characteristics of the skull, teeth, and limbs. Some of these are listed above, including the separate and well-developed radius and ulna in the forearm and tibia and fibula in the hindleg. Others include pentadactyl feet and presence of a clavicle. Additional characteristics (not necessarily unique to primates) include first toe with a

Primates
Primates have evolved over a period of millions of years, and the ultimate in evolution is the human. Over the course of time, different primates evolved different body structures which suited their time and their lifestyle, and the ecosystem into which they fit. The prosimians and the early primates were arboreal, and over time, they gradually descended from the trees, and developed an upright stance. This was accompanied by skeletal changes to accommodate the postural changes. Primates are distinguished from other mammals by nine general features: 1. A generalized limb structure, including basic pentadactyly and retention of bones often lost in other mammals (e.g. clavicle). 2. Mobile digits, especially the thumb and large toe. 3. Flattened nails and tactile pads occurring at the end of digits. 6. Less emphasis on the sense of smell. 7. Simple cusp pattern of molars and a general reduction in number of teeth. 8. Expanded and elaborated brain, especially the cerebral cortex.

The root of the current tree connects the organisms featured in this tree to their containing group and the rest of the Tree of Life. The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.
