PRIMATES AS AN ADAPTIVE ARRAY Primates are a recognized Order of extant mammals. This ancient group, whose origins go back to the very earliest mammals, is so diverse that it defies simple summary or simple definition. When we compare modern forms to fossil species, criteria that identify extant species often excludes possible ancestral fossil taxa. One solution to this dilemma is to list general characters that are progressively more evident in younger species, realizing that these attributes are not necessarily present in more ancient primate lifeways. Thus St. G. Mivart (1873) defined the primates as:
"Unguiculate claviculate placental mammals, with orbits encircled by bone; three kinds of teeth, at least at one time of life; brain always with a posterior lobe and calcarine fissure; the innermost digits of at least one pair of extremities opposable, hallux with a flat nail or none; a well-developed caecum; penis pendulous; testes scrotal; always two pectoral mammae."
Le Gros Clark (1959) defined the Order Primates as a natural group of mammals distinguished by nine general features. These features generally become more noticeable in recent primates so they are described as trends, that is, anatomical directions in which primates (as a group) diverged from other mammals. Some primate species do not have all of these characters, but they become more common as the primate order diverges from its ancient mammalian antecedent:

Beard, a paleontologist at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, is among the co-authors of the paper describing the new primates, published October 28 in Nature The diversity and timing of the new anthropoids raises two scenarios. Anthropoids might simply have emerged in Africa much earlier than thought, and gone undiscovered by modern paleontologists. Or they could have crossed over from Asia, where evidence suggests that anthropoids lived 55 million years ago, flourishing and diversifying in the wide-open ecological niches of an anthropoid-free Africa. That humans may trace their evolutionary lineage to creatures like the newly discovered anthropoids, which likely weighed between four ounces and one pound and could sit comfortably in your hand, is an intriguing possibility. But other paleontologists warn that more investigation is required. Image: Mark A. Klingler/Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

IN THE NEWS . Acting on a tip, KDFWR Law Enforcement officers obtained a court order and removed the animals from the private residence. It has been illegal since 2005 to import a long list of inherently dangerous animals to the Commonwealth - including ALL non-human primates. Too fragile for KY's cold winters, the marmosets will be transported to Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary in Gainesville, FL where they will live out their lives in the company of other marmosets. About Primates
Grant Applications Assisting PCI News ... Publications Primate Conservation, Inc., (PCI) is an all volunteer not for profit foundation [501(c)(3)] dedicated to studying, preserving and maintaining the habitats of the least known and most endangered primates in the world. Over 100 species, approaching half of all primates, are threatened or endangered. The tropical forests where most primates live are disappearing at an alarming rate.
Jane Goodall and others who have done field studies of primates in their natural habitat have shown that dedicated individuals are one of the keys to successful conservation. PCI provides grants to support the next generation of researchers and conservationists in the field. These grantees research the needs of species, focusing the attention of local people and the world. In many cases they are the endangered primates only defense against hunters and loggers.

HOMEBREWING INFORMATION
One of the many things I enjoy doing, and of the few that produce any reasonable results, is homebrewing. I make mead. Mead is the oldest known alcoholic beverage, and is produced from the fermentation of honey. Mead, like wine, can often take years to produce when shooting for high quality, robust, varieties and it only gets better with age.
