HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY COLLECTION
BARNARD COLLEGE - COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY New York City, NY 10027 Thomas Perera Ph. D.: Historian / Museum Curator Steven Stroessner Ph.D.: Psychology Department Chair This collection is dedicated to the preservation of the history and apparatus from the early days of the Barnard College Psychology Department. Barnard College, a four-year women's college, was founded in 1889 and the first courses in psychology were offered in 1906 over the strenuous objections of many faculty and administrators who maintained that psychology was not a fitting topic for young women. We have digitized the documents and apparatus which have been stored in the departmental archives for nearly 100 years and placed them on the internet in a form that makes them accessible to historians and students. This museum was created in 1995 and, as time permits, more of this information will be digitized and made available.
In this photograph, Harry L. Hollingworth, founder of the Barnard College Psychology Department, demonstrates the operation of the Hipp Chronoscope at the opening of the Hollingworth Laboratories.

Psychology
Science or Religion?*
What William Law wrote two centuries ago is even more evident today: "Man needs to be saved from his own wisdom as much as from his own righteousness, for they produce one and the same corruption." It is paradoxical that at a time when secular psychological researchers are demonstrating less confidence in psychological counseling, more and more professing Christians are pursuing it. "Christian" counseling centers are springing up all over the nation offering what many believe is the perfect combination: Christianity plus psychology. Furthermore, Christians who are not even in the counseling ministry look to psychologists for advice on how to live, how to relate to others, and how to meet the challenges of life. In their attempts to be relevant, many preachers, teachers, counselors, and writers promote a psychological perspective of life rather than a Biblical one. The symbol of psychology overshadows the cross of Christ, and psychological jargon contaminates the Word of God. Psychology is a subtle and widespread leaven in the Church. It has permeated the entire loaf and is stealthily starving the sheep. It promises far more than it can deliver and what it does deliver is not the food that nourishes. Yet multitudes of professing Christians view psychology with respect and awe.

Dec. 31, 2012 While I am out and about working on my social skills meeting people in the flesh that I have so cleverly avoided for over 40 years, I thought that it might be a good time to go back and put up some of the essays or musings that I believe were my most insightful. William A. Spriggs, Jan. 2010. The great debate going into the 2010 Fall General Elections is "out of control 'Government' spending." I've also begun to view editorials in the new media that America's militiry might might be the cause of "The Decline and Fall of the American Empire." I agree somewhat. But I am not advocating any reductions in military might, just a realignment of the resources. It is time for the military to stop "nation building" in foreign lands, but to bring some troops home to "nation re-build" here in America. RETHINKING POSSE COMITATUS

And men will walk on Mars
But we will still be monkeys
Down deep inside The study of how our minds have evolved, and the traces left by that evolution. The most important seems to be that we don't have a general, content-neutral intelligence, but a gang or collection of specialized intelligences bent and stretched into unnatural poses for things like math . Logically, all this is quite separate from the question of whether or not we use evolutionary processes in our thinking, whether the mind is a Darwin machine, but I think all the advocates of the latter support evolutionary psychology as well. It should be obvious that, if we have inherited a tendency or bias towards Q from our ancestors, this doesn't mean we should Q, and everyone accepts this without question when it comes to logic and reasoning. Certain popularizers (e.g. Gazzaniga, and especially Wright) forget this when it comes to things like the relations between the sexes: predictable, but depressing nonetheless. (Finding an evolutionary explanation for this bias is left as an exercise for the student.) Fortunately Blaffer Hrdy is an excellent corrective to this. Methodological issues/problems: Conflating observed range of variation in human behavior with range of possible behavior. Restricted cultural background of most experimental psychology subjects. Lack of knowledge of ancestral environments and their range of variability. Degree to which contemporary foraging societies can serve as proxies for ancestral ones is unclear. (Modern foragers tend to live in environments which agrarian or industrial societies
