Pyrotechnics
The most enduring passion in my life has been pyrotechnics. I was into it before electronics , before photography . It's occasionally gotten me into trouble , not to mention the occasional close call , but it's enhanced my life considerably. In March 1990, I started a pyrotechnics mailing list . It proved popular enough that eventually the newsgroup rec.pyrotechnics was created, with the volume of the mailing list used as justification. In its early years (1990-1994), I archived rec.pyrotechnics. You can retrieve compressed tarfiles of the messages from those years here

Introduction
The word pyrotechnics refers to the art, craft and science of fireworks. As such, it is related to a variety of arts and sciences - as an underdeveloped art, it is nevertheless comparable to many other human arts, such as music, theatre and film; as a science, it attempts to understand and quantify the chemical and physical phenomena that characterise pyrotechnic reactions. As a craft and art, pyrotechnics originated around 1st century AD in China, with the invention of black powder. As a science, however, pyrotechnics is quite young. The basic phenomena of flame and colour production are now well established, but novel effects and novel materials still continue to be discovered.
How did I get involved?
Pyrotechnics has always been a part of my other hobby, chemistry. It was not the only reason I was interested in chemistry - even today, the chemistry I am now happily doing really hasn't much to do with fireworks or pyrotechnic phenomena - but it provided an exciting field where to apply my newly acquired knowledge of chemistry. For several years, my interest merely smouldered; it was not until I got my hands at real

Pyrotechnics include not only the manufacture of fireworks but items such as safety matches , oxygen candles, explosive bolts and fasteners, and components of the automotive airbag Pyrotechnic devices combine high reliability with very compact and efficient energy storage, in the form chemical energy which is converted to expanding hot gases either through deflagration or detonation . The controlled action of a pyrotechnic device (initiated by any of several means, including an electrical signal, optical signal or mechanical impetus) makes possible a wide range of automated and/or remote mechanical actions; for example, the deployment of safety equipment and services, precisely timed release sequences, etc. The majority of the technical pyrotechnic devices use

History of Pyrotechnics
The birthplace of fireworks is generally recognized as China, with the first explosive mixture found being black powder, during the Sung dynasty ( 960-1279 ).
It is said that a cook in ancient china found that a mixture of sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal was very flammable and would explode if enclosed in a small space.
The first application of this technology was for entertainment. The Chinese are still the leader in the production of fireworks.
Once the recipe for black powder was perfected, they found that it was easily used as rocket fuel, and they made hand carved wooden rockets in the shape of a dragon, in the sixth century.
These rockets shot rocket powered arrows from their mouth, and were used against the Mongol invaders of 1279.
The principle behind these rockets is still used in rocket powered fireworks today.

Pyrotechnics
A blast of fire, shower of sparks, puff of smoke, flash of light, or aerial burst of twinkling, multicolored stars generates excitement from an audience which is unequaled by any other production element. It takes a company with extensive production experience with pyrotechnic effects to insure that the audience, cast, and crew are surrounded by a safe and comfortable environment, and no one accomplishes that better than AES. Our pyrotechnic engineers not only bring years of production experience to each and every project, they also bring leading edge design, imagination, innovation, and creativity that are second to none. Using state-of-the-art technology, AES is able to precisely choreograph all pyrotechnic effects with other elements of the production, such as sound, lighting, and multi-media content, producing breathtaking visual displays, while at the same time insuring safe execution of the effects. No show is complete without proper planning. AES manages all facets of the permit application process, including diagrams, insurance certificates, licensing, and coordination with venue staff and local fire authorities. Whether your production is local, nationwide, or around the world, the knowledgeable and experienced event support staff at AES addresses every element regarding the pyrotechnics used in the production well in advance to insure a safe and spectacular presentation without inconvenience to our clients.

"I say we take off, nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." Right, before we start. Blowing things up is not big and not clever. It is, however, great fun. dangerous , if you're not responsible enough to use them properly, then do us all a favour and don't. If you attempt to modify them, then don't come crying to me if you blow your hand off. Follow these simple rules when playing at sites:
  • Only use pyrotechnics supplied by that site, or agreed for use with the site owners. Failure to comply with this may result in their insurance being invalidated, you being asked to leave the site or both. When you have lit a pyrotechnic, deploy it immediately. Smoke grenades (especially military smokes) get very hot and will give you serious burns if you hold onto them. Try and avoid throwing pyrotechnics directly at people. Yes, you need to lob it in their general direction, but don't throw it at their head like you're at a coconut shy. Not only is the dangerous to them, but if they're bigger than you it may also be dangerous to you... If a pyrotechnic lands next to you

06 August 2008 NOTE: Do not attempt to use fireworks or any other explosives unless you are properly trained. You can easily get yourself or somebody else seriously hurt or killed! Even static electricity can cause them to detonate. Here we are in Upstate South Carolina getting ready for the 4th of July. I was invited to join a pyrotechnics crew down here. Typically it’s rather hard to get on a crew and even Sierra said “You don’t get invited to join a fireworks crew”. Well, I did. ? The kicker here is this company is the one that does the 4th of July show on the Mall in Washington DC!! Yea, big time company. www.pyroshows.com If you saw the shows by the Greenville in town Airport or by the Gov’t center in Greenville, those were ours.

Considering it’s extremely unique to the rest and it will burst in to an awesome display we called it “The Brave”. Why? How does the Star Spangled Banner end?

The Brave loaded and ready
The middle picture shows four 5” diameter mortars in the back and five 4” diameter ones in the front. Rigging the electric matches is a very dangerous part of the job. The slightest spark or screw up can ignite the fuse and launch every shell in the string before you can blink an eye. This is why we never rig matches with shells outside of a mortar. At least if something goes bad, they’ll fly and not explode on the ground.
