Welcome to the Roy J. Shlemon Center for Quaternary Studies
The Quaternary Period of Earth’s geologic history spans the last 2.6 million years, and contains repeated climate changes (ice ages), large changes in the chemistry of Earth’s atmosphere, massive extinctions and other evolutionary and ecological changes, the evolution of modern humans, and the emergence of civilization. These climatic, hydrologic, soils, landscape, ecological, evolutionary, and cultural changes offer a rich set of case studies that apply to many topics from Earth system science to natural resource management and economics. The Shlemon Center is a cross-disciplinary intellectual community focused on using the rich geological, fossil and archeological record of the Quaternary Period to learn about how the Earth’s environment changes and how such changes affect natural resources, such as water and forests, and societies. Few institutions have equal depth and excellence in this area.

The study of subfossil beetles (Class Insecta, Order Coleoptera) is becoming an important tool in understanding past environmental change. Virtually any non-marine sediment that has identifiable organic remains will include remains of insects, and many of these will be beetles.
Remains that are frequently found and are readily identifiable include disarticulated [unattached] heads, pronota, and elytra. The first illustration at the right, of the ground beetle Schizogenius sulcifrons (family Carabidae) , shows these body parts. The sculptural elements that are the basis for much modern taxonomy are preserved and make the fragments frequently identifiable to the species level. Most beetles are quite specific as to habitat requirements, and those in non-island environments have undergone almost no evolutionary change in the Quaternary Period. We therefore can use their modern ecological requirements as a basis for interpreting what past environments must have been like.
For example, the second figure shows a modern specimen of the rove beetle

This mural by R.G. Larson in the Illinois State By 16,000 years ago the height of the last major glaciation The landscape of the Midwest was very different 16,000 years ago. Although glaciers were retreating, much of the midwestern U.S. was still under ice. Some areas had been only recently deglaciated. These areas may have been covered with bare sheets of till that were slowly being revegetated. Large, proglacial lakes formed where morraines dammed the water coming off the melting glaciers . Dust storms were depositing thick layers of loess (windblown dust) over many areas. Lakes, marshes, and mires were common. Sixteen thousand years ago the climate was quite different in the area. Temperatures in the summer were significantly cooler than today. Winter temperatures were colder than those experienced today but not dramatically so. Because of the cooler climate, many of the plants and animals that inhabited the area around 16,000 years ago were different than those found in the region today. This can be seen in the reconstruction above. The reconstruction shows several mastodons feeding in wetlands in a parkland dominated by spruce and balsam (poplar or aspen). The picture shows the area in the fall. An osprey is hunting for fish over the area. In addition, several flocks of geese can be seen migrating through the region.

Ph.D. Yale University, 1965 Professor of Geological Sciences and Quaternary Studies Telephone: (207)581-2193 Fax: (207)581-1203 My primary interest is the geological history of large ice sheets and smaller mountain glaciers. A particular concern is the role of these ice sheets in Quaternary and late-Tertiary ice ages. Another interest is abrupt ocean-atmosphere reorganizations in glacial cycles. One current project deals with the Quaternary and late Tertiary history of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Studies of late Quaternary glacial deposits elucidate the role of the Antarctic Ice Sheet during the last few ice ages. Studies of late Tertiary deposits bear on fundamental climatic changes that preceded Quaternary ice ages. Recent projects involved reconstruction of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets during the last ice age. Another project deals with the alpine glacier history of the Chilean Andes.

OVER THE POLE: Surveying the Ice Ages from a Seat in Heaven
The human psyche has frequently been compared to an iceberg. And in the early days of the polar flight from Copenhagen to California, when planes were smaller and still flew low enough and slow enough for the passenger to see something, there was a wonderful sight along the way. Crossing the Denmark Strait between Iceland and Greenland, you looked down on icebergs floating south. Each was a white jewel glittering in the low northern sun, and were you a passenger viewing the icy mountain from a ship's deck, this would be all that you would see. But from one's window in heaven you saw far more. Painted turquoise by the waters, the immense underwater mass of the iceberg spread all about beneath your eyes. Majestic the frosty mountain of ice might be; but hidden in mighty mystery was the force that supported it. And such is the unconscious mind.

It should be deleted from your counts.)
Studies of Quaternary environments, those of roughly the last two million years of Earth history, are increasingly important as we struggle to understand the scale and rapidity of climatic and environmental changes in the modern world. How can we say, for example, that human activities are having major impacts on global climates if we can't say for sure what the natural rate of variability in those climate systems is?
Colby students are introduced to techniques in Quaternary Paleoecology through a course ( ) that is open to all students meeting the prerequisites. In this course, students learn to identify some of the more important non-marine fossil groups that provide useful data to help us re-create what past environments must have been like, and from that information to approximate what past climatic parameters must have determined that biological environment.
The study of palynomorphs (pollen grains) in sediments is one way that past vegetation changes can be assessed. Above, Colby students are shown preparing to study and sample a river-bluff exposure of sediments along the Sandy River, about a half-hour drive north of the campus; these samples will provide the basis for subsequent lab work during the semester, in which they'll be evaluating the pre-European forest composition and environment with that of the present day at this same site.

    Welcome to The Crevasse Zone
Every summer since 1946, scientists and students with the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) have lived on and studied the Juneau Icefield in southeast Alaska. One of the main projects conducted by the program is measuring and monitoring glacier velocities and surface elevation changes using high-precision GPS. The purpose of this site is to present the data and results of these GPS surveys. Why the name Crevasse Zone?
Simple. Crevasses are the number one hazard encountered by those of us who live and work on glaciers. All our survey work is done with GPS, often in total whiteout or limited visibility conditions. And since crevasses and the danger they present are constantly on our minds when we're on the Icefield, and because I needed a catchy name for this web site, I couldn't think of a more appropriate name than The Crevasse Zone. A bit about myself...
