ABOUT US Our research group in the Department of Geoscience studies the past behavior of ice sheets and glaciers and their interaction with ocean circulation, climate and sea level. We use a variety of techniques involving applied geochemistry in both terrestrial and marine settings, ice-sheet models, and climate models. Our research group is part of the much larger Quaternary focus across campus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison . We also work closely with the Center for Climatic Research

HERCHEL SMITH POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP The University is advertising one Fellowship in the area of climate science to be held either in the Department of Earth Sciences or in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP). The Fellowship will provide an opportunity for independent research, although the holder will usually work in close collaboration with established research groups. Applications are invited in the field of climate science related to the application of physical or mathematical models to interpret paleo-ocean processes and measurements.

Piacenzian older In Europe and North America, the Holocene is subdivided into Preboreal Boreal Atlantic Subboreal , and Subatlantic stages of the Blytt-Sernander time scale . There are many regional subdivisions for the Upper or Late Pleistocene, usually these represent locally recognized cold ( glacial ) and warm ( interglacial ) periods. The last glacial period ends with the cold Younger Dryas substage. The Quaternary Period is the most recent of the three periods of the Cenozoic Era in the geologic time scale of the ICS It follows the Tertiary Period, spanning 2.588 ± 0.005 million years ago to the present. The Quaternary includes two geologic epochs : the Pleistocene and the Holocene Epochs.

The term Quaternary ("fourth") was proposed by Giovanni Arduino in 1759 for alluvial deposits in the Po river valley in northern Italy . It was introduced by Jules Desnoyers in 1829 for sediments of France 's Seine Basin that seemed clearly to be younger than Tertiary Period rocks . The Quaternary Period follows the Tertiary Period and extends to the present. The Quaternary covers the time span of glaciations classified as the Pleistocene , and includes the present interglacial period, the

Irish Settlement Studies INTRODUCTION
THE 'IRISH SETTLEMENT STUDIES' DISCUSSION GROUP
The ' Irish Settlement Studies ' discussion group was founded in October 2000. Discussion in thr past has tended to centre on the medieval and prehistoric periods, but these are by no means the limits of this group's remit. The topics open to group members are well expressed in the above paragraph. Current membership stands at 115. To join the discussion group, simply click the link below to create an auto-addressed email, and press 'Send'. You will shortly receive via email a confirmation request to which you must reply. Within minutes your membership will be logged and you can begin interacting with other group members online. New members are encouraged to send an initial message to the group introducing themselves, and mentioning their areas of interest in settlement in Ireland. Members and non-members alike can freely access the group's archives. These help give a feel for the type of topics discussed for those considering subscribing, and help new members catch up on past debates. The Quaternary Period in Earth History
The Quaternary Period spans the last 2.6 million years of the Earth's history. The Quaternary is an interval with dramatic and frequent changes in global climate. Warm interglacials alternated with cold ice ages. The Earth is right now entering a time of unusually warm climate. Significant and potentially rapid environmental changes could pose major challenges for human habitability.
The expertise of Quaternary scientists is to interpret the changing world of the glacial ages and their impact on our planet's surface environments. Quaternary palaeoclimatic investigations play a key role in the understanding of the possible future climate change on our planet. The next (XXVIII) INQUA Congress will be held in Bern, Switzerland 20th July - 27th July, 2011
