The mission of Bureau programs is to protect Iowans from excessive exposure to radiation . Each year, Iowans are exposed to an average of 300 millirem of natural radiation and 60 millirem of manmade radiation. The Bureau functions under legislative mandates found in the Iowa Code, Chapters 136B, C and D. Program activities include:
  • licensing of facilities using radioactive materials registration of facilities using radiation-producing machines or operating tanning units; inspection of facilities using radioactive materials; credentialing of persons using radioactive material or operating radiation-emitting machines; approval of training courses and continuing education; and emergency response as it relates to radioactive materials and nuclear power plant incidents.

Environmental Health Careers with State and County Health Departments
Employing science and engineering graduates from a variety of disciplines, environmental health programs offer meaningful and satisfying careers helping protect people and communities from public health risks. They provide an attractive variety of work assignments and settings, and ample opportunity for professional development and advancement. State positions and most county jobs offer excellent fringe benefits including subsidized health insurance coverage, reasonable and flexible work hours, generous amounts of leave time, and unrivaled pension plans. In combination, these factors allow science and technology graduates to experience gratifying careers while enjoying an enviable quality of life. Recent surveys indicate there is a substantial shortfall of candidates for these jobs.

Center for Devices and Radiological Health
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) is the branch of the United States Food and Drug Administration responsible for the premarket approval of all medical devices , as well as overseeing the manufacturing , performance and safety of these devices. The CDRH also oversees the radiation safety performance of non-medical devices which emit certain types of electromagnetic radiation , such as cellular phones and microwave ovens CDRH splits medical devices into three classes with different regulatory requirements: Class 1 includes everyday items such as toothbrushes which are unlikely to cause serious consequences if they fail. Manufacturers are required to follow what are called "general controls" which closely match ISO 9000 requirements. In addition to the general controls, Class 2 devices require an approval that is referred to as a "510k" after the relevant section of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The intent of this class was for new manufacturers of devices that already existed when the rules were established. A class 2 device is required to be "substantially equivalent" to existing devices. The class is now used for "medium risk" devices such as demineralized bone powder used for reconstructive surgery, which is officially substantially equivalent to Plaster of Paris , a much older product that was used for the same purpose. This equivalence is used when the FDA does think a full approval process with extensive clinical trials is inappropriate.

The Division of Radiological Health is responsible for protecting Tennesseans and the environment from the hazards associated with ionizing radiation. This responsibility encompasses regulating the use and possession of radioactive materials and radiation producing machines within the state, as well as responding to accidents involving radiation. In addition, the Division monitors the environment for radiation, especially around nuclear facilities and other major radioactive material users. The Division is comprised of four sections as follows: The Licensing/Registration/Planning Section licenses medical, academic, and industrial facilities to possess x-ray equipment. A license is issued only upon demonstration by the applicant of the adequacy of required radiation protection programs to protect workers, the public, and the environment from any hazards of radiation presented by the proposed use of the radioactive material.
