WHAT IS RADON? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. It is released during the natural decay of uranium, which is found in most rock and soil. Radon is odorless, invisible, and without taste.
WHERE IS RADON FOUND? Although certain areas of the state have higher levels of radon then others, radon has been detected in every county in Tennessee.
WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED? Radon, like other radioactive materials, undergoes radioactive decay that forms decay products. Radon and its decay products release radioactive energy that can damage lung tissue in a way that causes the beginning of lung cancer. The more radon you are exposed to, and the longer the exposure, the greater the risk of eventually developing lung cancer. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, resulting in 15,000 to 22,000 deaths per year.

Atomic Number: Atomic Radius: Atomic Symbol: Rn Melting Point: -71 ºC Atomic Weight: Boiling Point: -61.7 ºC Electron Configuration: [Xe]6s Oxidation States:
    History
(From radium ; called niton at first, L. nitens : shining) The element was discovered in 1900 by Dorn, who called it radium emanation . In 1908 Ramsay and Gray, who named it niton, isolated the element and determined its density, finding it to be the heaviest known gas. It is essentially inert and occupies the last place in the zero group of gases in the Periodic Table. Since 1923, it has been called radon.
    Isotopes
Twenty isotopes are known. Radon-22, from radium, has a half-life of 3.823 days and is an alpha emitter; Radon-220, emanating naturally from thorium and called thoron, has a half-life of 55.6 s and is also an alpha emitter. Radon-219 emanates from actinium and is called actinon. It has a half-life of 3.96 s and is also an alpha emitter. It is estimated that every square mile of soil to a depth of 6 inches contains about 1 g of radium, which releases radon in tiny amounts into the atmosphere. Radon is present in some spring waters, such as those at Hot Springs, Arkansas.
    Properties
On the average, one part of radon is present at 1 x 10

Are there any early symptoms of radon poisoning? Radon gas has a half life of 3.8 days which breaks down into Polonium and then into a Lead atom. Although these elements are toxic to humans the quantities that are deposited into our bodies aren't sufficient to cause major health issues. So there are no early radon gas poisoning symptoms, but the release process of these elements into the lungs is able cause a very severe problem! So why should we be worried about radon in our homes? You can not see or smell radon gas as it seeps into your basement from the earth below. This radioactive gas causes damage to our cells deep within the lungs. Unlike carbon monoxide gas which has defined symptoms from increasing amounts of exposure similar to the flu. Radon gas exposure has no early discernible symptoms. A client of mine was told by his doctor at his yearly exam that he should test for radon gas. Why?... because it's good preventive medicine. You could kind of call it a

    Symptoms of Radon Poisoning
By Michelle Kerns eHow Contributor updated: May 5, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? While radon is a naturally occurring gas in Earth's atmosphere, studies have shown that radon inhalation is a leading cause of lung cancer. Radon can accumulate in buildings for a variety of reasons, and while simple tests can be done to detect the level of radon in homes and buildings, being aware of the symptoms of radon poisoning is essential to protecting yourself and your family
    Identifiying Radon Poisoning
  • Radon poisoning occurs when areas without adequate ventilation build up high amounts of radon gas. This can occur in underground mines, basements and in homes or buildings.
Radon, like all other radioactive elements or gases, decays over a period of time, giving off tiny radioactive particles. When these particles are inhaled, they can damage the DNA in the cells of the lungs, resulting in lung cancer.

Americans in the Dark About Lung Cancer, Survey Finds
MADISON, Wisc., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ Men and women worry about prostate and breast cancer, yet the number one cancer killer in the United States – lung cancer – isn't on their radar. According to a survey released today by the National Lung Cancer Partnership, Americans know little about lung cancer's causes, symptoms and the number of lives it takes compared to other cancers. The survey of 1,000 American men and women age 18 and older found most women were unaware that lung cancer takes more women's lives each year than breast cancer. And they weren't alone – most men surveyed were unaware that lung cancer takes more men's lives each year than prostate cancer. "Lung cancer is by far the number one cancer killer in the United States, yet the disease isn't on people's radar," said Regina Vidaver, Ph.D., executive director of the National Lung Cancer Partnership. "If we're going to catch it early, treat it and give people the best chance for survival, they need to know about lung cancer and its symptoms, take measures to reduce their risk and talk with their doctor about their health history."

    What Is Radon?
Radon-222 is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas. It forms from the decay of naturally occurring uranium-238, which is found in soil and rock throughout the world. Radon is present both outdoors and indoors. Exposure in homes mostly results from radon-contaminated gas rising from the soil. This makes it an unusual indoor air pollutant in that it has a natural source. Exposure to radon is also a known cause of lung cancer in underground miners of uranium and other ores. Thus, its presence in indoor air has raised concern that it may also be a cause of lung cancer for the entire population. Radon has a half-life of 3.8 days; that is, half of a given amount takes 3.8 days to decay. It breaks down into a series of solid elements called

For a new home, ask if radon-resistant construction features were used and if the home has been tested.
Fix the home if the radon level is 4 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher.
Radon levels less than 4 pCi/L still pose a risk, and in many cases, may be reduced.
Take steps to prevent device interference when conducting a radon test.
The EPA estimates that radon causes thousands of cancer deaths in the U.S. each year.
    * Radon is estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year. The numbers of deaths from other causes are taken from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 1999-2001 National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Report and 2002 National Safety Council Reports. Radon is a cancer-causing, radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon. But it still may be a problem in your home. When you breathe air containing radon, you increase your risk of getting lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General of the United States has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of lung cancer is especially high.

    What Is Radon?
Radon is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas that causes lung cancer. Radon can build up to dangerous levels inside homes, schools and other buildings. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, after smoking. [ Radon gas occurs naturally. It forms when uranium breaks down to radium, which in turn breaks down to form radon. As radon decays, it releases radioactive byproducts that are inhaled and can cause lung cancer. Radon-related lung cancers are responsible for an estimated 21,000 deaths annually in the United States. [
Where Does Radon Indoors Come From?
Radon is emitted from the ground and enters a home through cracks in walls, basement floors, foundations and other openings. Because radon comes from rock and soil, it can be found anywhere. Exposure to limited concentrations, like those found outdoors, is impossible to avoid. However, when radon gets trapped indoors, it may build up to dangerous concentrations. The most important source of radon gas indoors is the soil and rock surrounding the building. By sealing your home to keep radon from getting through cracks and openings, you can significantly reduce your home's radon levels. You may need to install a separate radon ventilation system in your home to remove high levels.[

Prelude A large portion of the general population is under the misconception that the frequently published risks associated with radon are well accepted scientific facts. In reality, the vast majority of well designed studies do not support policy or positions that exposures to indoor radon pose a significant threat to health, and indeed, the majority of those studies indicate that, at concentrations typically seen in homes, as the level of radon increases, the risk of lung cancer goes down, not up. We have reviewed some of the more recent studies cited in popular literature and you can read those reviews by clicking, here . The following section is a brief discussion of how radon occurs and the science -based risks associated with radon exposure.
    Contents
    Radon Occurrence
Radon And Health Radon And Risk EPA Guidelines And Regulations ... Sub-Slab Depressurization (SSD) Radon Occurrence Throughout the entire Earth, the naturally occurring element uranium is found in at least trace amounts. This element is naturally radioactive and with time, the uranium decays into several other elements (called "daughters"), one at a time. Each time a transformation into a new element takes place, the atom is said to undergo "decay". During each decay, energy is released from the atom. The released energy is collectively given the term "ionizing radiation" and the atom is said to exhibit "radioactivity". The list of subsequent daughter products is known as the “decay chain.”

    Discovered : by F.E. Dorn in 1900.
    Isolated in Halle, Germany
Origin : The name is derived from radium.
    Description :
Radon was first discovered as the gas produced from radium as it decayed in sealed ampoules. It is colourless and odourless, and is chemically inert, but it is dangerous because it gives off alpha rays. There is a detectable amount in the atmosphere, and concentrations can build up indoors in certain localities.

Prescription for Radon, A Medical Forum
Posted by cindy ladage (state of illinois) on October 27, 2010 - 4:41pm Around the nation there have been a variety of forums. After attending the 2007 USEPA Contractor Radon Conference in Columbus, Ohio, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) Radon Program and the American Lung Association (ALA) of the Upper Midwest planned what we hoped would be the first medical forum. With funding and assistance from USEPA, the Illinois Thoracic Society, MURC, and Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and several other partners, we forged ahead. The purpose of the project was to create a repeatable event that would offer continuing education to medical professionals where they would learn about the connection between radon and lung cancer. It was our thought that those that treat victims of lung cancer were not hearing the radon message and the conference was one answer to that issue. The agenda for the conference included the basics of radon science, radon epidemiology statistics, and lung cancer details from an MD and a story from a lung cancer survivor. Many of the speakers were nationally known.
