82. EARTHFORCE
Interactive exhibit about the earth s movements. From the Franklin Institute Science Museum.
http://www.fi.edu/earth/earth.html
If you have ever felt the rumble of an earthquake or seen the eruption of a volcano, you've witnessed EARTHFORCE . For scientists, the word force is defined as a push or pull that causes a change in motion. EARTHFORCE , then, is the pushing and pulling in the core, crust, or water of the Earth that causes motion like eruptions, quakes, or floods. Beneath the surface of the Earth, tremendous EARTHFORCES are at work, pushing and pulling against the crust. The surface of the Earth, called the crust, is constantly moving, creating its own EARTHFORCE About three-quarters of the Earth's crust is covered with water where EARTHFORCES are always at work.
EARTHFORCES are constantly at work. Every day, somewhere, the core, crust, or water is pushing and pulling and causing motion. Keep track of the daily changes EARTHFORCE causes.

83. Activity: Earth Science
An elementary or junior high experiment. Students can see for themselves the effects of a greenhouse, and relate this to what occurs in the atmosphere. From the Franklin Institute Science Museum.
http://sln.fi.edu/tfi/activity/earth/earth-5.html
The Greenhouse Effect In A Jar
Grade Level: K - 8 This simple experiment serves as an introduction to the greenhouse effect. Students can see for themselves the effects of a greenhouse, and relate this understanding to what occurs in our atmosphere. Objectives: 1. Help students understand the greenhouse effect as a physical phenomenon. 2. Use simple experimentation techniques including: observing and recording data, use of a control, drawing conclusions from results, use of a model. Materials: For every group of (about) four students: 2 Small thermometers
1 Jar or other see-through container
1 Clock or watch
1 Copy of the worksheet
Sunlamp or access to a sunny area to perform the experiment
Method: Group the students and distribute the materials. Each group should place their thermometers a few inches apart under the sunlamp or in direct sunlight. Wait about three minutes so the thermometers will be giving accurate readings, and then have the students record the temperature readings on both thermometers as well as the time. Each group should now place their jar over one of their thermometers, taking care that the jar does not cast a shadow over the uncovered one. If the thermometers are too large to remain horizontal inside the jars, it is fine to stand them against an inner side. Every minute, for ten minutes, the students should record the readings of both thermometers.

84. Exploratorium Magazine: Chocolate
Information about cacao, history, production, and health effects. Includes bibliography and links to related material. Provided by the Exporatorium, a science museum in San Francisco.
http://www.exploratorium.edu/exploring/exploring_chocolate/index.html
hocolate. There are few foods that people feel as passionate about a passion that goes beyond a love for the "sweetness" of most candies or desserts: after all, few people crave caramel, whipped cream, or bubble gum. Chocolate is, well, different. For the true chocoholic, just thinking about chocolate can evoke a pleasurable response. You may want to grab a bar or make a nice cup of hot cocoa before you begin exploring here. This special online-only edition of Exploring takes a closer look at the sweet lure of chocolate. We'll examine the fascinating and often misreported history of chocolate, follow the chocolate-making process, and take an online visit to a chocolate factory. We'll also look at the science of chocolate, and find out about the latest research into the possible health effects of its consumption. Lastly, we'll explore the somewhat controversial question of why chocolate make us feel so good.
In this activity, you'll learn about "tempering" a delicate process of melting and cooling chocolate that not only produces delicious results, it's also an opportunity to learn a little science!
