Are we alone in the universe, or are there intelligent beings out there with whom we could communicate? We may never know if we rely on space travel distances between the stars are unimaginably vast, and our most advanced ideas for space rockets , such as light propulsion nuclear propulsion solar sails and matter-antimatter engines , are many years away from becoming reality. How can we detect signs of extraterrestrial (ET) life? One way is to basically eavesdrop on any radio communications coming from beyond Earth. Radio is not only a cheap way of communicating, but also a sign of a technological civilization. Humanity has been unintentionally announcing its presence since the 1930s by way of the

    At a glance:
A high-intensity pulsed laser, teamed with a moderate sized telescope, forms an efficient interstellar beacon. Using only "Earth 2000" technology, we could build such a laser transmitter. To a distant observer in the direction of its slender beam, it would appear (during its brief pulse) a thousand times brighter than our sun. Beginning October 19, 1998 we have been searching for such intense laser pulses, transmitted deliberately in our direction by another civilization in order to initiate communication across interstellar distances.

SETI projects use scientific methods to search for electromagnetic transmissions from civilizations on distant planets The United States government contributed to earlier SETI projects, but recent work has been primarily funded by private sources. There are great challenges in searching across the sky for a first transmission that could be characterized as intelligent, since its direction, spectrum and method of communication are all unknown beforehand. SETI projects necessarily make assumptions to narrow the search, and thus no exhaustive search has been conducted so far.

    SETI
By Maggie Is anybody out there? What is SETI? SETI stands for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. Overall, SETI is trying to find intelligent life forms, or civilizations, in other places in our universe. With SETI, we're not sending messages; we're looking for them from outer space. How does SETI work? SETI is a tool we use to search for intelligence on other planets/moons. Most SETI organizations search for radio signals. Radio signals can carry messages, just like they carry sound into your radio. Radio signals that carry messages have special patterns. SETI scientists look for these special patterns in radio signals. Giant telescopes also look for information from space. A smaller, but growing number of organizations search for light signals. Who is doing SETI? SETI projects are starting up all over the world, both by professional astronomers and amateurs. Two organizations have taken the lead in sponsoring SETI projects: the SETI Institute and the Planetary Society. The SETI Institute's main project is called Project Phoenix. The Planetary Society supports eight different projects. Why do we conduct SETI?

An alternative approach to achieving such a "first contact" is to survey the sky in hopes of finding transmissions from a civilization on a distant planet. However, such an effort has many obstacles.

    Overview
Some SETI observations have been conducted using the 305m radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico Visiting another civilization on a distant world would be fascinating, but at present is beyond human capabilities (see Project Orion and Project Daedalus for some hypothetical explorations of the concept). However, it is perfectly within reach to develop a communications system using a powerful transmitter and a sensitive receiver, and use it to search the sky for extraterrestrial worlds whose citizens have a similar inclination as terrestrials. A basic assumption of SETI is the that of "Mediocrity"
