Overview
Visiting another civilization on a distant world would be fascinating, but at present is beyond our capabilities (see however Project Orion and Project Daedalus for some attempted solutions). However, it is perfectly within our capabilities to develop a communications system using a powerful transmitter and a sensitive receiver, and use it to search the sky for extraterrestrial worlds whose citizens have a similar inclination.

General Information
Comparing Optical SETI Observing Projects
Optical SETI was born in 1961, when Charles Townes and Robert Schwartz first proposed the use of lasers for interstellar communication. Since then, over a dozen theoretical studies, and a handful of actual searches, have been conducted. Though long overshadowed by microwave searches, OSETI is emerging as a valid search strategy in its own right, owing to recent advances in photonics equipment and devices. The table below, though probably not complete, summarizes actual Optical SETI observing programs, past and current. It is based upon Lemarchand, Optical SETI Since 1960 Bioastronomy News 11(1):2, First Quarter 1999 (used by the gracious permission of the Planetary Society). If it's just us, it's a terrible waste of space.
"There are countless suns and countless earths all rotating around their suns in exactly the same way as the seven planets of our system. We see only the suns because they are the largest bodies and are luminous, but their planets remain invisible to us because they are smaller and non-luminous. The countless worlds in the universe are no worse and no less inhabited than our Earth." Giordano Bruno (1584)
De l'infinito universo e mondi
More than 400 years ago, Giordano Bruno gave a most excellent explanation of why we can't directly detect extrasolar planets. He went on to postulate that countless other worlds exist and that many are inhabited. Humans have regarded the heavens as the home to other beings since before written history. Humankind's oldest science, astronomy, seeks mainly to explore and understand the universe. SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) seeks to answer one of our oldest questions... is humanity alone in the universe? Have we heard from ET? Here's what the SETI Institute says in answer to that question:

Keck Observatory, Hawaii Optical SETI: A Spectroscopic Search for Laser Emission from Nearby Stars
Amy Reines In 1961, Robert Schwartz and Charles Townes suggested that advanced civilizations could use optical lasers as an efficient means of interstellar communication. Today, Optical SETI (OSETI) projects search for highly energetic pulsed lasers and continuous wave lasers. Projects include dedicated searches, piggyback searches, and data mining. Many OSETI projects search for highly energetic pulsed lasers using photometric techniques. Photometers with two or three photodetectors are used to search for nanosecond laser pulses in broadband visible light. A high powered nanosecond laser can outshine its host star during its brief pulse because starlight is hardly detectable on such a short time scale. Therefore, coincident pulses with a few or more optical photons would stimulate further analysis. W) and moderately powered continuous lasers (~50 kW). No laser emission lines were found.

We crunch for all the major Boinc projects and nearly all the minor ones. Our aim is to use our spare computing power to advance human knowledge while enjoying some friendly competition amongst ourselves and with other teams. So if you're Scottish by birth, ancestry, residence, emotional attachment or even if you've no link at all with Scotland but just fancy being part of a lively friendly team, please come join us, everyone is welcome. The most important part of the site is our Forum . Even if you're not a member of any of our teams we'd be delighted to have you visit. To post/tweet/write stuff here you need a twitter account and you need to tweet me, megacruncher, asking me to add you to the list.
Statistics
There are an awful lot of sites out there where you can get statistics about Boinc. Here are my two favourites which I access daily: TSBT Stats by Temujin. TSBT on Boincstats. Also each project has their own stats pages, on their websites, which you can get to from the projects tab on your Boinc Manager.
I keep being kicked off. How do I get onto the Forum?

SETI
The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. The first practical proposals in SETI were made in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but were aimed only at interplanetary communication (see communication, with the Moon and planets ). The roots of SETI in its modern form, as a search for artificial signals over interstellar and even intergalactic distances, can be traced back to the 1930s with the discovery by Karl Jansky of radio waves coming from a source outside the Solar System. This led, in time, to the birth of radio astronomy and to the construction, in the late 1950s, of the first large radio telescopes such as those at Jodrell Bank and Green Bank . Only with such powerful instruments was it feasible to start looking for Earth-type signals from nearby stars.
The dawn of SETI
As a serious scientific enterprise, SETI began in 1959 with two independent events. The first was the publication of a paper in which Cornell researchers Philip Morrison and Guiseppe Cocconi discussed the suitability of radio waves as a communication medium, man's newly-acquired ability to eavesdrop on interstellar radio conversations, and the optimum frequency at which to conduct a search (see

The science of SETI@home
SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) is a scientific area whose goal is to detect intelligent life outside Earth. One approach, known as radio SETI , uses radio telescopes to listen for narrow-bandwidth radio signals from space. Such signals are not known to occur naturally, so a detection would provide evidence of extraterrestrial technology. Radio telescope signals consist primarily of noise (from celestial sources and the receiver's electronics) and man-made signals such as TV stations, radar, and satellites. Modern radio SETI projects analyze the data digitally. More computing power enables searches to cover greater frequency ranges with more sensitivity. Radio SETI, therefore, has an insatiable appetite for computing power. Previous radio SETI projects have used special-purpose supercomputers, located at the telescope, to do the bulk of the data analysis. In 1995, David Gedye proposed doing radio SETI using a virtual supercomputer composed of large numbers of Internet-connected computers, and he organized the SETI@home project to explore this idea. SETI@home was originally launched in May 1999.
