ADVANCED RECORDING PRIMER CHAPTER 3 - PART 2, BY ROBERT DENNIS DYNAMICS SIGNAL PROCESSING History and Uses: Dynamic processing is one of the most effective tools that a recording engineer has to make sure all of those important parts that have been recorded will actually be heard in the final product. The term "Dynamic Range" refers to the level difference between the loudest musical passage and the softest musical passage. Dynamic Processing devices change this level difference. TYPES OF PROCESSING Compression Compression means that any signal that tries to exceed a set "threshold" level will not be allowed to increase as much. In other words the compressor turns down the maximum passages so they won't be as loud. With the threshold control set to maximum, no passages will be turned down; as the threshold control is brought down some peaks of the music will exceed the threshold and be turned down. Compression is used to even out the volume of the music so that all passages are more even. Expansion The term "expand" means that any signal the falls bellow the threshold level will be made to go lower in level than it would without expansion. In other words expansion is just the opposite of compression. One use of expansion is to "undo" the over-use of compression. Another use would be to make low level sounds (like mechanical sounds of instruments) less noticeable.

    Preface
This book provides an applications-oriented introduction to digital signal processing written primarily for electrical engineering undergraduates. Practicing engineers and graduate students may also find it useful as a first text on the subject. Digital signal processing is everywhere. Today's college students hear "DSP" all the time in their everyday life - from their CD players, to their electronic music synthesizers, to the sound cards in their PCs. They hear all about "DSP chips", "oversampling digital filters", "1-bit A/D and D/A converters", "wavetable sound synthesis", "audio effects processors", "all-digital audio studios". By the time they reach their junior year, they are already very eager to learn more about DSP.
    Approach
The learning of DSP can be made into a rewarding, interesting, and fun experience for the student by weaving into the material several applications, such as the above, that serve as vehicles for teaching the basic DSP concepts, while generating and maintaining student interest. This has been the guiding philosophy and objective in writing this text. As a result, the book's emphasis is more on signal processing than discrete-time system theory, although the basic principles of the latter are adequately covered.

    Introduction to Digital Signal Processing
    What is DSP?
DSP, or Digital Signal Processing, as the term suggests, is the processing of signals by digital means. A signal in this context can mean a number of different things. Historically the origins of signal processing are in electrical engineering, and a signal here means an electrical signal carried by a wire or telephone line, or perhaps by a radio wave. More generally, however, a signal is a stream of information representing anything from stock prices to data from a remote-sensing satellite. The term "digital" comes from "digit", meaning a number (you count with your fingers - your digits), so "digital" literally means numerical; the French word for digital is numerique . A digital signal consists of a stream of numbers, usually (but not necessarily) in binary form. The processing of a digital signal is done by performing numerical calculations.
    Analog and digital signals
In many cases, the signal of interest is initially in the form of an analog electrical voltage or current, produced for example by a microphone or some other type of transducer. In some situations, such as the output from the readout system of a CD (compact disc) player, the data is already in digital form. An analog signal must be converted into digital form before DSP techniques can be applied. An analog electrical voltage signal, for example, can be digitised using an electronic circuit called an analog-to-digital converter or ADC. This generates a digital output as a stream of binary numbers whose values represent the electrical voltage input to the device at each sampling instant.

An outline of the basic principles of DSP (Digital Signal Processing), including tutorials and Java applets illustrating DSP techniques
    http://www.dsptutor.freeuk.com/
W ELCOME TO MY DSP tutorial. DSP stands for Digital Signal Processing - the basis of many areas of technology, from mobile phones to modems and multimedia PCs. DSP devices account for a significant proportion of worldwide semiconductor sales, amounting to billions of dollars annually. DSP is traditionally a highly mathematical subject, and the standard DSP textbooks contain a lot of mathematical exposition. This is necessary for a profound understanding of the subject. However, many people just want a simple introduction to the basic concepts and techniques of DSP. This site aims to provide just that. The site arose from an introductory DSP course I used to teach a few years ago. I am no longer actively involved in DSP, but I have kept the site going because I still receive appreciative messages from people who have found it helpful. I hope that by reading this material, and trying out the Java applets, you will gain a basic appreciation of what DSP is about. If you want to learn more about DSP, try visiting the
