They are arboreal residents of the rainforests of Central and South America . The sloth's taxonomic suborder is Folivora , while some call it Phyllophaga . Both names mean "leaf-eaters"; derived from Latin and Greek respectively. Names for the animals used by tribes in Ecuador include Ritto Rit and Ridette , mostly forms of the word "sleep", "eat" and "dirty" from Tagaeri tribe of Huaorani . In Brazil, sloths are commonly called "Bicho-preguiça" ("lazy animal") because of slow movements related to their very low metabolism.

Ground Sloths
Four species of ground sloths inhabited the United States at the end of the last Ice Age. These were Jefferson's ground sloth ( Megalonyx jeffersonii ), Laurillard's ground sloth ( Eremotherium laurillardi ), the Shasta ground sloth ( Nothrotheriops shastensis ), and Harlan's ground sloth ( Glossotherium harlani ). Of these four only two, Jefferson's and Harlan's ground sloths, are found in the midwestern U.S. Ground sloths were large relatives of the modern two-toed sloths ( Choloepus spp.) and three-toed sloths ( Bradypus spp.). Unlike modern sloths, which spend most of their time in trees, the ground sloths spent all of their time on the ground. This is fortunate because Jefferson's and Harlan's ground sloth were each about the size of an oxen. All four species of ground sloth had very large claws. However, all were herbivores. They had relatively small, blunt teeth, which they probably used for browsing on trees and shrubs. The shape of their hip bones indicates that they could stand up on their hind legs. This would allow them to reach high up into trees for the best leaves and twigs. The picture above shows a reconstruction of Jefferson's ground sloth from the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History
Reconstruction of Harlan's Ground Sloth
Harlan's ground sloth is reconstructed as looking quite similar to Jefferson's, but was a grazing form. This reconstruction of a Harlan's ground sloth is in the museum at Mastodon State Historic Site near Kimmswick, Missouri. The Historic Site is located at the Kimmswick Site. This archaeological site is one of the most intriguing sites known dating from the time of the Clovis people.

Let's say you're driving around an unfamiliar city one day and you get lost. The odometer racks up more and more miles as you try to find a landmark to reorient yourself. Then, the gas light flickers on, and you start to panic because you have no idea where the nearest gas station is. What do you do to ensure that you don't become stranded? You would have to maximize the return on every drop of fuel burned. For instance, if it's a summer day, you'd turn off the air conditioning and roll up the windows. You'd probably drive at a steady clip and try not to gun the engine.

    Two-toed Sloths - Megalonychidae
    Hoffman's Two-toed Sloth
(Choloepus hoffmanni) Sloths are truly bizarre creatures, very high on the list of things I wanted to see most in Panama. Two-toed Sloths are uncommon; we saw only a couple in Panama. They're slow moving but a little faster and brighter-seeming than the algae-growing Three-toed Sloths. They're pale tan, with long, straight fur. This one was on the move in the late afternoon at the Centro de Exhibiciones Marinas on the Amador Causeway in Panama City.
    Three-toed Sloths - Bradypodidae
    Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth
(Bradypus variegatus) On our second day in Panama we were on our way between Cerro Azul and Cerro Jefe when we spotted this creature starting to cross the road. We immediately stopped and got out in the middle of the road, making sure traffic didn't run her over. Even more bizarre than the Two-toed, Three-toed Sloths are common; we saw quite a few in Panama. They're extremely slow moving - it took several minutes to cross the road. They're a darker brown and have otherworldly faces and odd, stubby tails. Certain species of moths make their living on sloth fur - we saw a couple of them flying around her as she crossed the road. This one looked like it had a strange growth on its belly... which eventually we saw was a baby! The curly-headed babies are

Rainforest Animals Sloths are extremely slow-moving mammals found in the rainforest canopies of Central and South America. There are two species of sloths:two-toed and three-toed. Most sloths are about the size of a small dog and they have short, flat flat heads. Their hair is grayish brown but, at times they look grey-green in color because they move so slowly that tiny camouflaging algae grow all over their coats. Some sloths stay in the same tree for years. Their huge hooked claws and long arms allow them to spend most of their time hanging upside-down from trees. Since they have a slow metabolism, they need very little food. They feed on fruit, leaves, buds, and young twigs. Sloths also sleep upside-down for up to 18 hours at a time. Mothers also give birth to babies upside-down. Babies cling to their mothers until they are able to take care of themselves. Sloths are nocturnal and sleep curled up with their head placed between the arms and the feet drawn close together. This disguises them as part of a tree so that its enemies like the jaguar do not see them. Sloths rarely climb down from the trees and can live for up to 30 years.

These are the Brown-throated Sloth , the Maned Sloth , the Pale-throated Sloth , and the Pygmy Three-toed Sloth Although similar to the somewhat larger and generally faster moving two-toed sloths , the two genera are not particularly closely related. Recent phylogenetic analyses support the morphological data from the 1970s and 1980s that the two genera are not closely related and that each adopted their arboreal lifestyles independently. It is unclear what, if any, ground-dwelling sloth taxa the three-toed sloths evolved from; the two-toed sloths appear to nest phylogenetically within one of the divisions of Caribbean megalonychids and thus probably either descended from them or are part of a clade that invaded the Caribbean multiple times. A sloth has tiny ears and doesn't hear very well. But it has great eyesight, a good sense of smell, and is sensitive to vibrations. SLOTHS Perhaps my favorite animal found the rainforest is the sloth. Costa Rica is home to two of the five species of sloth, the two-toed ( Chollepus hoffmanni ) and three-toed sloth ( Bradypus variegatus The sloth is the slowest mammal on Earth. It takes a month for a sloth to move 1 kilometer! Sloths are arboreal animals, which means that they spend most of their lives hanging upside-down from tree branches. They eat, sleep, mate, and give birth upside-down in the trees. They hold onto tree branches with strong, curved claws that are on each of their four feet Sloths are herbivores. They eat leaves, tender young trees, and fruit. But it's hard to find time to eat during the sloth's busy schedule that includes sleeping about 15-18 hours each day. The main difference between the two-toed and three-toed sloths (besides the number of toes) is that the three-toed sloth is diurnal and the two-toed sloth is nocturnal. Both of the animals are about 1.5 - 2 feet in length. Both species have a stumpy tail.
