The Sloth Bear In India
Ecology, Behavior, and Conservation
From 1996 to 2000, we investigated the behavioral ecology of sloth bear in Panna National Park, central India.

  • K. Yoganand (resume)
Yoganand has carried out the field studies on this project as a senior research fellow with the Wildlife Institute of India . Over the last ten years, he has worked in various forest areas of India studying the behavior and ecology of many species. Before taking up this study on sloth bear he studied the forest birds in Andaman islands and surveyed the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in southern India for small carnivores. He has an ardent interest in ants, birds, and carnivores. He also pursues his interest in surveying remote areas, developing population estimation techniques, designing field studies, and wildlife photography. He is currently at the Front Royal Conservation and Research Center under a fellowship from the Smithsonian National Zoological Park (Friends of the National Zoo). Dr. Clifford G. Rice, Ph.D.

Sloth Bears - Habitat
BBCi
www.bbc.co.uk Sloth Bears (Indian bears, Jungle jokers, lip bears or Ursus ursinus Meyer) inhabit forested areas and grasslands at lower elevations. They can live both in dry and jungle areas. The Sloth Bear species can be found in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal.
Sloth Bears - Evolution
The ancestors of all modern bears, including the Sloth bear, evolved from a bear-like dog that developed from the miacids (a small tree-climbing carnivorous mammal living 30-40 million years ago.) The first bears lived in subtropical Europe about 20 million years ago. It was the size of a small dog. About 2.5 million years ago the direct ancestors of the modern bears appeared. The genus Ursus has divided into three evolutionary lines about 2 million years ago.
Sloth Bears - Diet
The main food for Sloth Bears is termites, which are abundant and stable food source. They also eat other insects, bird eggs, honey, fruits and various kinds of vegetation. Sloth Bears have special adaptations for eating termites. They lack the inner part of upper incisors, this allows them to form a gap and suck the termites into their mouths. The naked lips of Sloth Bears can protrude and the long tongue helps to lick the termites. Also Sloth Bears have little hair on the muzzle that protects them from termites' bites. These bears can close their nostrils such as to not let the termites into their noses. Sloth Bears dig into the hard tall pillars where the termites live and insert their muzzle to suck up the insects and their larvae. Sloth Bears also climb and shake trees to obtain fruits.

Sloth Bear
The Sloth bear has very shaggy hair. Their muzzle is long, much longer than the other seven bears. Using their claws to dig, they can then use their lips to form a tube which can go deep into the ground, or hard to reach areas like dead trees for their food. Their main food is termites. You can hear them suck up their food from several feet away.
Most sloth bears live in forests and tropical rain forests of India. Out of all the bears, it seems that the Sloth bear enjoys being around other bears. When we watched the Sloth bears at Toledo zoo they looked like the enjoyed making faces at each other.

Since I last checked my blog, my dashboard grew a new tab called "Monetize." I'm intrigued only because I'm curious as to what ads would run. If it's anything like FaceSpace, you'd be seeing ads for teeth whiteners and alternatives to Botox right now. And that would be about as depressing as they are on FaceSpaceyes, I know I'm OLD dammit, I don't have to be continually reminded of it with your sneaky targeted ads! Show me an ad for some kind of hipster band or trendy clothing store and I might actually click on the link because I'd be so grateful not to be taken for an old person!
I read somewhere that the most famous of mommy bloggersyou know who I'm talking about, and I think she's GREATmakes $40K/month. Though she has THOUSANDS of readers and I have maybe 15. (Not to mention the talent thing.)
Not much else going on here. I think I'm used to the heatwhat else can you do? It's not like it's going to get cooler in AUGUST, or even September, so I think we just have to deal until it finally breaks in mid-October. For a while, I was staying indoors and making sure I never went out without water and all that, and now I'm just living my life as usual.
