T hough snails and slugs look very different from one another, they're practically the same thing except that snails carry coiled shells on their backs, while slugs don't. If you're reading this where it's warm and rainy, you shouldn't have problems finding snails and slugs. They're found at the base of your house's foundation on the shady northern side, or maybe nibbling lettuce in the garden. If you're reading this during a drought, however, you may need to snoop around. Look for them early in the morning when dew wets everything. If it's really dry, you may just have to wait, for your backyard's snails and slugs may well be underground or beneath rocks or fallen trees, in suspended animation, waiting for rain. I found the one in the picture above resting on a slender bunch of grass flowers. In real life this snail's shell is less than half an inch long.

BASIC FEATURES:
Some snail species live on land, while others live aquatic lives. If you've ever watched aquatic snails slowly moving across the glass walls of the inside of a water-filled aquarium, you know the snails' (as well as the slugs') basic features:
  • Eye spots at the tips of slender tentacles . The tentacles feel what the simple eye spots may not see. In land snails with two pairs of tentacles, the eye spots reside on the longer upper pair.

Slugs GardenLine Common Saskatchewan Pests Bonnie Willie Description: Slugs are slimy, rather disgusting creatures that eat plants. Adults vary in colour from almost white to brown, grey and black. They are legless, elongate, mollusks (snails, shellfish, etc.) and prefer to feed at night. They will however feed during the day in moist shady locations. Their movement is highly dependant upon moisture availability. They move by sliding forward on a trail of secreted slime. The slime has a silvery appearance and is often used to detect an infestation. The most common type of outdoor slug in our region is the grey garden slug, Deroceras reticulatus. All slugs are similar in general appearance but vary in colour and length. Slugs will feed on a variety of animal, green plant and fungal materials. Succulent fruit and tender leaves are their preferred hosts but slugs will also feed on root crops such as carrots and potatoes. Slug eggs are very small (less than 3 mm or 1/8 inch in diameter). Eggs are colourless and deposited beneath the soil surface, making them very difficult to detect. Newly hatched slugs are also small and transparent making their presence easily overlooked. Because of this, slug eggs or young slugs can enter the garden on new plants or in soil materials. Transplants, perennial divisions, strawberry plants...etc, whether they are given to you by your neighbour or purchased at a retail outlet, can be responsible for infesting your garden. Even borrowed garden equipment can introduce slug eggs. Slugs, even though considered to be a slow mover, can move unaided from one garden to the next in an urban situation. Eggs, because of their size, can even be transferred on the bottom of footwear when crossing an infested area.

Slugs and Snails are molluscs of the class Gastropoda which literally translated is 'stomach foot'. Gastropods form the second largest class in the animal kingdom, the largest being insects. Most terrestrial snails and slugs belong to the subclass Pulmonata, order Stylommatophora. Of the 29 species in Britain a few are carniverous, but most live on living and decaying plant tissue; usually the the plants we like to look at or eat ourselves!
This is an example of their destructiveness
these three have hollowed out this swede
and created a snug home Instead of a shell like the snails, slugs have an internal horny plate covering their breathing cavity. There is a range of colours and sizes of slug depending on the species. The Field Slug is 2cm and grey, while the Round Back Slug can be 5-10cm, black or brown and in some cases can have an orange colour on their foot. They feed by rasping ragged holes in flowers, leaves, stems, roots and seeds, with young plants the leaf feeding can kill. Below soil level some species attack root crops - the small Black Keeled Slug being particularly destructive, especially to potatoes and the bases of plant stems. Many species spend most or all of their life underground and those seen are only a small proportion of those present.

The other slug seen in the series is the Six-Tailed Slug , its jinchūriki being Utakata Slugs' offensive abilities seem to revolve around shooting acid from their mouths, similar to the way toads use oil. Slugs have also been shown to be able to divide themselves into many smaller replicas, though this ability may be unique to Katsuyu due to her size. For defending others the slugs have the ability to encapsulate themselves around an individual's entire body. This essentially makes them a big cushion for the person inside, protecting the person from physical collisions. Slugs can also absorb chakra from their summoner and even control it to some extent, as shown when Tsunade transferred her own chakra to Katsuyu in order to heal the citizens of Konoha when Pain attacked. Lastly, slugs are capable of communicating psychically with each other over long distances.

Slugs
Slugs, a common Garden pest, are snails without a shell. Size can vary from one-fourth inch to two inches depending on age and species. They spend the winter as pearl-like eggs in protected places, usually under plant debris. Feeding occurs primarily in the evening and on dark, cloudy days. They eat irregularly-shaped holes in tender plant tissues, leaving a slime trail behind. Slugs require a cool, moist environment and won't survive long under dry, warm conditions. Slug populations thrive under frequent irrigation, heavy shade and high plant densities that keep soil cool and moist. Several cultural practices can help manage slug problems. For example, slugs can be quickly eliminated by creating a drier, warmer soil surface. Drip irrigation, plant spacing and increased air circulation are recommended management tools. Good yard sanitation that eliminates daytime hiding places helps control slugs. Or, you can create hiding places that serve as traps. Simply place wet newspapers or boards in the Garden. The slugs hiding underneath should be destroyed each morning. Beer or yeast traps also are effective and easy to make. Just bury a shallow can or bowl to the rim of the container and fill it with beer or a yeast mix. Slugs are attracted to the yeast, fall in and drown. You will need to clean out the traps frequently and replenish them with beer or yeast mix.

Summary: Slugs are common pests during wet weather and can damage many types of plants in the garden. The slug feeds mainly at night, preferring cool, moist hiding places during the day. Cool, wet spring conditions will result in large slug populations. A reader asks: Slugs travel across my very large back yard lawn and make their way each night to the back porch. By 8 PM there are at least 5-10 slugs at my back door. There is no food source there. I just wonder why the journey there and how can I stop it? Dear Reader: The slugs you are finding at your back door are seeking the moisture that gets trapped along the foundations of most structures. The east and north sides of structures usually provide the most shade and that is where most slugs will be found. Slugs are common pests during wet weather and can damage many types of plants in the garden. They feed mainly at night, preferring cool, moist hiding places during the day. Cool, wet spring conditions will result in large slug populations. To keep slug populations in check you'll need to keep the area free of accumulations of leaves, prunings, piles of old boards, stones or anything that can provide a cool, moist hiding place for slugs. Keep the ground as dry as

Leopard Slug Limax maximus Shetland Biological Records Centre Leopard Slugs were introduced to America, but are now common. They grow to four inches. They are usually grayish yellow with black spots or bands. Often they are wrinkled. Leopard Slugs have four tentacles on their head; two long ones and two short ones. Leopard Slugs live in fields, woods, and gardens. They prefer damp, shady places. In daylight, you can find them under rocks, logs, and similar places. These slugs are mostly nocturnal , but will sometimes come out on rainy days. Naturhistoriska museet Courtesty of the Royal British Columbia Museum, Photographer: Philip Lambert Leopard Slugs have interesting mating habits. First, they will circle each other, before intertwining their bodies. They do this from a tree branch or near an edge. Next, the two slugs will fall from the branch and hang, suspended by mucus slime. After mating, since slugs are hermaphroditic , both slugs will be able to lay eggs.
