    92. Microscopic Structure Of A Slug's Foot And Slime
Article by M. Halit Umar with many photomicrographs.
    http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artnov01/slug.html
Microscopic structure of a slug's foot and slime secretion M. Halit Umar Scientific Researcher, The Netherlands
One characteristic of members of the Kingdom Animalia is their ability for movement. Animals achieve this property of movement by a specialized tissue called muscle. Muscle cells can contract and then go back to their initial state before contracting again. Such repetitive contraction of the muscle cells causes movement. We recognize three types of muscle cells which form specialized tissues: Skeletal muscle, heart muscle and smooth muscle. Skeletal and heart muscle cells are cross-striated, whereas smooth muscle possess no cross striations, contract rather slowly and cause a standing wave motion (of the stomach, intestines and large bowels, for example). Slugs have no articulate skeletal system so they have to crawl. They achieve this by using muscles especially in their foot. They are equally successful in climbing on vertical surfaces like walls. However, they have neither toes nor fingers to hold fast. Their ventral surface is rather flat and triangular with the apex towards the distal end (tail). Although a slug is not well equipped for quick movements, like those of a jumping cat or human athlete, they nevertheless wander steadily to find food. How do they accomplish this? Well, there is a substance called 'slime' of which all animals may benefit according to their physiological needs. Slugs are masters in secreting such slimy substances all over their body, especially on the ventral side. The aim of this short article is therefore to show microscopical aspects of the slime secretion of a slug.

    Spotted Banana Slug

Ariolimax columbianus Spotted Banana Slug with debris-laden slime at its tail. genus: Ariolimax species: columbianus. A. columbianus lives as far north as Sitka Alaska, west of the Cascade range in British Columbia, Washington and Oregon; into California as far south as the Salinas Valley. This is the only species that is sometimes spotted and has great colour variations. The Banana Slug was first given a scientific name in 1851 by Augustus Gould. Columbianus is named after the Columbia River district where this animal was first studied. Extensive research on these Ariolimax species was published by Albert Meade in 1943. Banana Slugs are the largest of all North American slugs. Most adult Ariolimax slugs are about 15 - 20 cm (six to eight inches) in length. They can reach a length of 25.4 cm (10 inces). They are the second largest slug in the world, the largest being the Limax cinereoniger of Europe, which can reach 30 cm (12 inches) in length. Banana Slugs eat living and decaying vegetation, roots, fruit, seeds, bulbs, lichen, algae, fungi, animal droppings and even carcasses. Mushrooms are their favourite food. Predators include snakes, foxes, porcupines, crows, ducks, shrews, moles, salamanders and even humans.

    • Life cycle
      edit Life cycle
There is one generation a year in the most of the northern parts of its range, with caterpillars seen from late June to October (Wagner, 2005). Two generations or more from Missouri south.
      edit Egg
Eggs are laid singly or in small clusters on leaves (Wagner, 2005).
      edit Larva
The larva is flattened and ovoid in outline, with spiny tubercules along the back and sides. These are mildly stinging. The sides have craters ringed with black or white along them. In the final instar they usually have two to four sets of black hairs at the tail end, that can fall off, called ' caltrop ' spines after the Roman defensive weapons. Colourful, but the colours vary enormously (Wagner, 2005). Like all limacodids, the legs are shortened and the prolegs are reduced to suction cups. Maximum length, 20 mm (Wagner, 2005).
