Studying Social Anthropology
Social Anthropology is the comparative study of human conduct and thought in their social contexts. Societies around the world vary enormously in their social, cultural and political forms, while their individual members display a huge diversity of ideas and behaviour. The study of these variations, and the common humanity which underlies them and renders them intelligible to outsiders, lies at the heart of social anthropology. While the subject matter overlaps to some extent with that of sociology, human geography and development studies, social anthropology is also closely linked to history and philosophy.

Cultural Anthropology (known as Social Anthropology in Great Britain ) is one of the four branches of general anthropology , the primary focus being the study of human culture . In this context, culture can deal with a host of subjects, such as, but not limited to, religion mythology , art, music , government systems, social structures and hierarchies, family dynamics, traditions and customs, as well as cuisine, economy, and relationship to the environment. Any and all of these factors make up important aspects of culture and behavior, and are some of the pieces of human history that cultural anthropology tries to put together into a larger, more comprehensive picture of the human experience. The ultimate goal is to bridge gaps between cultures, breaking down barriers that divide us, allowing us to understand each other more completely and thus to understand ourselves. Through this process we not only advance our ability to take care of all members of human society for the future, but we also give credit to those who came before, honoring and maintaining their memory.

Social Anthropology
Sociologyindex Sociology Books 2009 Social anthropology or cultural anthropology is the science of human social and cultural behaviour and its development. Social anthropology is conceptually and theoretically similar to sociology. Anthropology originally developed as the study of non-western cultures but many anthropologists now study western societies and the disciplines of sociology and anthropology have been tending to converge. Social Anthropology and Sociology BSc. at Brunel University differs from social anthropology courses at other universities because of the broad social science (rather than biological or archaeological) perspective from which it is taught. Social anthropology modules at Brunel University introduce students to the history and theory of social anthropology, and to some current issues in the fields of ethnicity, gender, religion, and kinship. Sociology topics include sociological theory, methods and contemporary social institutions. Social anthropology research was given the highest possible award, a 5 rating, in its Research Assessment Exercise.

Social Anthropology at Manchester
Social Anthropology studies social and cultural diversity across the world. At Manchester, the department was founded in 1949 by Max Gluckman, and has since then developed strong national and international recognition for rigorous and innovative research and teaching. We are particularly known for our expertise in political and economic anthropology; anthropology of new technologies; visual and other sensory media; and the study of borders, place and space. Distinctively, many staff collaborate with other disciplines in their research, using anthropology's particular expertise to add a distinctive element to a range of different projects.

== A brief history ==
Although 19th century ethnologists saw "diffusion" and "independent invention" as mutually exclusive and competing theories, most ethnographers quickly reached a consensus that both processes occur, and that both can plausibly account for cross-cultural similarities. But these ethnographers pointed out the superficiality of many such similarities, and that even traits that spread through diffusion often changed their meaning and functions as they moved from one society to another. Accordingly, these anthropologists showed less interest in comparing cultures, generalizing about human nature, or discovering universal laws of cultural development, than in understanding particular cultures in those cultures' own terms. Such ethnographers and their students promoted the idea of "[[cultural relativism]]", the view that one can only understand another person's beliefs and behaviors in the context of the culture in which he or she lived.
