Filmed talk What is social anthropology? You can explore some of the ideas and methods of anthropology further on this web-site. Films There are a series of ten introductory lectures on the basic way of looking at kinship and marriage, and four on basic economic anthropology. In due course there will be further films on politics and law, and religion and ritual. There is a series of nine films covering classical theory in all the social sciences from 1700-2000. Books I have tried to explain the basic ideas in anthropology in a simple, non-technical, way in thirty letters to my grand-daughter Lily, imagined to be about 17 years old. They can be found off this web-site under Letters to Lily: on How the World Works. The web-site to the book also contains suggestions for further reading. Up to date reading lists are to be found on various Social Anthropology Departmental Web Sites, including that at Cambridge.

About the Author
Introduction
In a recent discussion of the idea of tradition, R. J. Smith said: …the rituals performed at weddings and funerals today contain many of the core symbols – and are designed to embody some of the most deeply held convictions – of the members of any society. (Smith, 1995: 29) I assume that the Shinto part of the ceremony is associated with religion because, well, because we all know that Shinto is a religion. There are gods in it. But why describe the party afterwards as highly secular? Edwards has clearly shown that it is at the party that many of the core symbols and deeply held convictions, including the subordination of individual autonomy and the hierarchical interdependence of all the actors, are given powerful expression. Edwards appeals to Victor Turner’s (1967, 1969) version of Van Gennep’s rites of passage in his discussion of the wedding as the liminal phase in the transformation of the principals from one kind of social actor into another (1989: 102-3). The rituals transform the principal actors, they also transform the wider society’s cognition of them, and finally they instruct both the principal actors and the participants in what is expected of marriage.

Substantive focus and practice
Practioners of social anthropology investigate, often through long term, intensive field studies (including participant observation methods), the social organization of a particular people: customs economic and political organization, law and conflict resolution, patterns of consumption and exchange kinship and family structure, gender relations , childrearing and socialization religion , and so on.
Social anthropology also explores the role of meanings, ambiguities and contradictions of social life , patterns of sociality, violence and conflict, and the underlying logics of social behaviour . Social anthropologists are trained in the interpretation of narrative ritual and symbolic behaviour not merely as text , but with communication examined in relation to action, practice, and the historical context in which it is embedded. Social anthropologists address the diversity of positions and perspectives to be found within any

Expertise and Research Interests
Ellen R. Judd has been conducting field research since 2003 on the social implications for rural sending communities of large-scale rural-urban migration from rural west China to urban and coastal regions. One focus of the research is on women's networks and the gendered implications of this population shift. A complementary project examines migration's effects on persons at risk (including the elderly, disabled, widowed, and orphaned) remaining in the countryside. Examining state policies of social and economic security for rural residents and rural residents' responses to these policies are central components of the linked projects. This research is currently (since 2009) being extended to explorations of emergent health care initiatives for west China migrants and their families, both in receiving and sending communities.

Human Evolution
Human evolution is a field of biolgical research concerned with the origin of humans. H omo sapiens and its ancestors are at the core but comparative analyses also include great apes, other primates, and mammals. Human Evolution is part of the discipline "physical anthropology" and requires a multidisciplinary approach involving evolutionary biology, primatology, genetics, paleoecology, geology, mathematics, linguistics, and others. The research at our department comprises:
Human Ecology
We would like to achieve a comprehensive process based on integrative questions involving multiple values, scales, tenures, uses, and needs.
We therefore refer to interdisciplinarity in more than a serial way concerning on the one hand the scientific research process itself and the involvement of scientists as citizens and citizens as scientists.

Welcome to the School of Archaeology, History and Anthropology
The School is amongst the largest in the University comprising the three popular disciplines of Archaeology, History and Anthropology, in addition to the Heritage Academy of Wales, the University of Wales Archaeological Service (UWLAS) , and the Sophia Centre for the Study of Cosmology in Culture The School provides an ideal setting for a unique and interdisciplinary approach to study. For if Anthropology provides us with the theoretical apparatus to understand and unlock the present, then Archaeology and History take those same theoretical tools to help unlock, explore and explain the past. All our staff are research active and specialists in their field. They publish widely in a variety of formats, from monographs and edited collections, to peer-reviewed journals and site reports. The School achieved great success in the last RAE with over 50% of its research output judged to be of International and national quality. This helps generate a vibrant research culture, the basis of interdisciplinary seminars and conferences with colleagues from other Schools, notably the School of Classics. Our research expertise feeds into teaching at both UG and PG level. We offer a range of UG programmes, from broad-based studies in Archaeology, History and Anthropology to more specialist ones in Medieval Studies, Ancient History and Archaeology, Ancient and Medieval History, Archaeology Practice and Archaeology Environmental. At PG level we offer both distance and/or residential MAs in Social Anthropology, Anthrozoology, Cultural Astronomy and Astrology, Social Archaeology, Local History, Historical Studies (Medieval), Historical Studies (Modern), Civilisations of the Mediterranean and Land Management and Environmental Archaeology.
